@Shutterbug: @Mae: @Mrs. Lemon-Lime: @Freckles: @tysonja: @alohaorchid: @.twist.: I'm convinced. I'm going to check out pale green/grayish backsplashes at Home Depot this weekend - hopefully I can find some samples to bring home and see in our kitchen and then find something similar/cheaper online.

Thanks everyone!

I actually think subway tiles are quite classic (you could almost argue that granite countertops or white cabinets would date a house too), but i agree with some of the others that there would be too much white.

We also have a similar backsplash like @Shutterbug:'s (glass turquoise) and i like how neutral it is without it being too sterile and in your face.

I like the idea of white or grey subway tiles or some kind of sea glass kinda tiles. I like things neutral! :)

@Shutterbug: agree, sea foam green would look great @raspberries: kitchen.

also, I like the look of using the same material on the counter and the backsplash. My mom's kitchen was updated 4-5 years ago with my help. The counter and backsplash were both the same granite except for the stove area. She used a small square glass tile sized stone and we popped out a few randomly to place cored glassed tiles in it. Then to give it a finished look we used rounded stone trim, which butted up against the granite backsplash. The tan of the stone was found in the granite so that worked well. The colored glass tiles were chosen because of existing kitchen decor.

I think our backsplash would look good in your kitchen. It is sort of a very soft grey/green glass and marble. You can buy it here: http://www.overstock.com/Home-Garden/SomerTile-11.625x11.75-in-Reflections-Piano-Ming-Glass-and-Stone-Mosaic-Tile-Pack-of-10/6296400/product.html?refccid=2KEM27K4QL33GXCKQVF37DTJ2I&searchidx=12

@raspberries: Lowes! But it was about two years ago, so I'm not sure if they still have it :(

It's actually fairly similar to this one, but ours is a mix of frosted and clear, instead of frosted and crackled (it looks like?) http://www.lowes.com/pd_282570-47603-GL05X2SWGEM_1z0z33v+1z1408a__?productId=4177109

Thanks ladies! I keep going back and forth on the white subway tile - I love the clean look, but I don't want it to be too sterile-looking.

@regberadaisy: And that's a really good point - we'll be in this house for maybe 5 more years, so I'd really hate for subway tiles to be out of style then!

@Mrs. Yoyo: I looove the green one!

@Shutterbug: I'd love to see it, especially if you can tell me where you got it (and hopefully if it's available in Massachusetts, ha - I found a really beautiful backsplash that was only available in CA, and I'm not brave enough to buy without seeing in person.)

I wouldn't do a color. You will get sick of it fast. Bring in color other ways. I would do white subway tile, or even glass grey subway tiles.

If you don't want to commit to color on the backsplash, you could always do a subway or mosaic in neutral tones that would punch it up a bit. Or do a white tile with a dark grout (last pic)

@raspberries: we have a light green/teal glass tile backsplash that I think would look great with your kitchen! I'll see if I can find a picture.

ETA: ugh, ok you can barely see the backsplash in this (mid-renovation) picture. The slightly greenish hue of the glass is a subtle way to bring in some color without it being like woahgreen!

I have a love/hate relationship with color...so while I would love to say a colored glass tile, my practical side would say white subway or pick a color from your countertop and use that on the backsplash, in tile form.

I think because you have white cabinets and white ish counters I would go with a splash of color.
Subway tile is great but it's also very in right now which means it will be out at some point. Something to consider if this isn't your forever home.

We're almost done remodeling our kitchen, but have gotten kind of stuck on the backsplash - any interior-design minded bees who can help me? We have white cabinets, oak floors, and a kind of white/taupe/neutral quartz countertop (see pictures below - sorry if they're huge!)

I kind of like the look of white subway tiles, but I think that's mainly because I can't imagine how to work color in - the rest of the kitchen is painted beige, but I'm not opposed to painting!

ETA: Added a close-up of counters as well
