We did it ourself and it was a lot of work as we had to clean, sand, and then do a good job painting. </p> <p>Four years in, the pain has definitely chipped of in some high traffic areas (mostly on the cabinets near the sink that get wet sometimes) but it has held up well. We are planning on doing a total remodel sometime in the future. </p> <p>With your picture, I vote for painting your walls and maybe the island. I think it would still look really updated and would make the countertops pop. However, I have never DIY'ed such a project so full disclosure that I don't know whether that's going to be a lot harder to pull off correctly than white. Like if you want this to last you five year until you redo it, great, but unless you are really good at painting it might not last ten years (per the paint store guy...). We had white cabinets and appliances in our last house and it didn’t look bad at all. Eventually you can change the counters out but plenty of people have white cabinets with wood slab counters (which looks similar to the color of yours). I feel like you might need/ want to paint them as well (which is probably a lot easier than the cabinets from what I heard). My neighbor just painted her old blah outdated cabinets dark blue and it looks so much better. But the people in the paint store really discouraged her from doing it since I guess it’s hard to do right. </p> <p>I like the white stain idea in theory- I’ve never seen that before. If you are looking for white, how about a "light stain" in white or ivory? You would still see the texture of the grain and it would not appear as harsh as would wood paint/lacquer. Another plus is that a stain would be a subtle change that would update your kitchen, as well as, complement the counters and appliances rather than competing with them. FWIW -We have a double coat ivory stain on our pale oak cabinets. I was never thrilled with white in my kitchens as my DH is messy when he cooks (Chef Boyardee. 🙄🤣) and my kiddos are, well, kids. White was a lot of upkeep in the past. With a color stain (* see affixed picture), it both lightens up the kitchen AND is easier to keep up with as I clean!
