I was cutting jalapeños when the juice from one sprayed into my eyes. I screamed, closed my eyes and dropped the knife onto my foot.

My roommates at the time both came running into the kitchen, one left laughing as the other helped me clean my eyes and the cut on my foot.

Probably the time we were cooking a steak in a skillet and it smoked so much that our apartment filled with smoke and we set off the fire alarms for the whole complex. We called the non-emergency line to say that there was not a fire, but the fire truck still had to come and a whole crew of firemen in full gear came up to our apartment. They set up a massive fan to blow the smoke out. I was SO embarrassed, and I'm sure our neighbors thought we were insane (as they were evacuating the building during the alarm :meh: ). Luckily the firemen were very nice and said it happens all the time. After they left, we ate the steak and it was cooked perfectly, hahaha.

Once I put a steak wrapped in bacon too close under the broiler heating element and started a small fire in the oven. I think the fat from the bacon was the culprit. I freaked out because there were actual flames and I didn't want to take out the steak just for them to spread.

@StbHisMrs: oh that sounds so painful. I hope they heal quickly. During the winter DH heated some cider to boiling. I didn't realize how hot it was and when I picked it up I dropped the mug, spilling it and burning my entire belly and part of my leg. It was so painful and didn't even blister. I can't imagine how much yours hurts.

@Chuckles: that is really bizarre!

I have burned myself loads of times, I am pretty clumsy. But worst was probably when I was cooking on a gas hob whilst wearing a scarf, and managed to set the scarf on fire! I panicked and did not know what to do, I considered doing a 'stop, drop and roll' like we were taught in school! In the end just stuck it under the tap :silly:

Bear with me because this might be a little long, but it was so bizarre...
This happened in my kitchen, but to a friend's girlfriend. He (C.) had just started dating her (J.), so we didn't know her very well yet. We had invited them and two other couples over for dinner at 7:00. C and J love to cook, so they offered to bring a side dish. Great. First, they didn't show up until *8:30* and C kept updating us that he was waiting on her. We were super annoyed and thought about eating without them, but figured she was running super late cooking and didn't want to make her feel bad since we didn't know her well.
So then they finally showed up at 8:30, and all she brought with her was a couple of cooked sweet potatoes with plans to make some elaborate deep fried sweet potato dumplings. WTH was she doing before they came? We still don't know. She brought other ingredients, prep bowls, an immersion blender, and a little deep fryer! To start cooking. At 8:30. When people had been there since 7. In someone else's kitchen whom she barely knew.
Then it got worse. We were all hanging out in the living room while she cooked in the kitchen. We heard her call out for her boyfriend, who came back looking very upset. J had somehow put her finger near the blade of the immersion blender and accidentally turned it on. She had cut herself really badly and they needed to go to the emergency room. So they left and we went into the kitchen to see the damage. Again, we still don't know what happened, but there was blood spattered ALL OVER our kitchen. Not a lot, but little drops in like a 10 foot radius. I've always been curious how the blood ended up all over, but have never wanted to ask her. Craziness. They are still together and we don't like her much more now :bummed:

I set my own sleeve on fire when I reached over a gas burner. I didn't even realize it until I smelled something burning, and then I stood there like an idiot because I didnt know what to do. Finally ended up sticking my arm under the faucet. I've also burned many a plastic cooking tool and oven mitt by setting them on hot burners.

Ouch! That sounds really painful! Hope you heal quickly.

The other night I was making veggies on the (gas) stove and forgot to turn the heat off. In the morning I smelled gas and sure enough, the stove was still on, but the fire had burned out so natural gas was leaking everywhere. We had to evacuate until the gas company could come and measure the levels. :meh:

Another time I started a grease fire and didn't know how to put it out. Thankfully I was living with a roommate and he helped me put it out with salt.

Scary stories, thank you for indulging me!!!

@Corduroy: Scary, I hate fires!! I can't even look at the blisters, my Husband left for work in Seattle yesterday so I have to have my Mom come help me with the bandages!

@hellocupcake: Oh no!! I've apart started fires from losing track of time too.

@Foodnerd81: I'd pass out too!!

@Ree723: I'm so glad they weren't underfoot as they had been 5 minutes before. That would have been terrible.

@Mamaof2: I was writhing in pain from 5:30-2:30am and it was just water, I couldn't imagine grease burns.

@Cole: Thank goodness no one got hit with any glass!

@wonderstruck: My son did something similar, he pulled a paper towel down a little too far and it touched a burner, we caught it before it took off to far.

@Mama Bird: That's crazy lucky that they didn't catch on fire! I hope I'm as lucky and don't have any scars.

@turkeylurkey: Oh wow!! Hope they were insured and lucky nobody got hurt!

These posts make mine not seem so bad! I was a teenager making cookies and they were about done. I opened the 400 degree oven door with my left hand and held it (because my parents oven was old and the door would fall if you let go). With my other gloved hand I pulled out the pan of cookies a little too far. The pan hit my exposed arm that was holding the oven door. Searing pain! I just ran it under cold water but never sought treatment. It didn't blister, but I had a scar for probably close to 10 years that has very, very slowly gone away. There is only a slight, unnoticeable shadow of it now. DH and I used to joke that I branded myself like they do to cattle.

Ouch!! That sounds just horrible! The only major kitchen oops was when I made dinner in my cast iron pot. It had been baking in the oven for hours. I took it out, put it on the stove and then started doing something else. Went to move the pot and forgot it had just come out of the oven. I grabbed both handles and burned the insides of my hands. Hurt like hell, but not nearly as bad as your feet, I'm sure!!

My worst so far was dropping an entire covered pot of baked brown rice on my tile kitchen floor, after attempting to pick it up one-handed, straight out of the oven. Dented the pot, got rice and glass (at least it was shatterproof) EVERYWHERE. And of course, dinner was lacking. :bummed:

I was cooking dinner and had stuff in the oven and on the stove. Stuff on the stove finished so I turned off the burner, and moved whatever it was. Then I got stuff out of the oven with an oven mitt, and when I was done, I put the oven mitt on the burner that I had been using. Well, it was still hot and the oven mitt caught fire. I grabbed it with a pair of tongs and ran it out of the house to put out. When I came back in, it turns out that flaming pieces of fabric had dropped as I ran onto the linoleum floor which caused it to bubble, melt and burn. We ended up needing to replace the entire kitchen floor. DH jokes that I did it on purpose because I hated the linoleum...

@StbHisMrs: ouch! I hope that heals quickly. My mom and my brother have both spilled pots of boiling water on themselves - it's awful, but thankfully at least no scars.

I recently put some beets on the stove to cook so I can make salad. They take a few hours to cook through, and I put them in the back, poured the pot full of water, and forgot about them when we were rushing out the door to go to a party. We came back four hours later to some char grilled beets in a black pot. Thank goodness there wasn't a fire! The beets did taste pretty good, once I cut off the black bits.

Oh no! Mine isn't painful, so that's a plus. My parents drive at my childhood home had one of those stoves where there are actual flames. In high school I decided to cook something while home alone and I turned on the wrong burner. Unfortunately for me, there was a stack of paper plates sitting on the burner I turned on! Luckily I was able to put out the fire without it causing damage and my parents didn't find out.

Years ago I was trying to cook bacon in the oven - we were at my grandparents old farm house and the oven was kinda high - I went to get the baking sheet from the oven and it tilted back and poured hot grease all over my hand - I had huge blisters and my brother rushed me to the ER - oh the pain!! To this day I refuse to cook bacon in the oven.

@StbHisMrs: Oh my goodness, how awful! Thank goodness none of your LOs were nearby when it happened! Hoping you heal quickly!

My worst kitchen mistake was a few years ago, a couple of nights after Thanksgiving. I turned the oven on to 400, as I was going to bake a frozen pizza, but didn't realise the oven hadn't yet been cleaned from the turkey juices and whatnot bubbling over a few nights earlier. Needless to say, the oven caught on fire, and when I saw it, me in my infinite wisdom, panicked and threw a glass of water on it. On a grease fire. Yeah, pretty sure fire safety 101 says to never, ever throw water on a grease fire! A small fireball ensued but luckily burned itself out really quickly without causing any damage. Fairly sure I could have been a candidate for the Darwin Awards that year....

My worst is probably when I was trying cut a slab of frozen bacon. Instead of setting it down and cutting it in half, I was trying cut it lengthwise between the slices, really using a lot of force. No surprise, the knife slipped off the bacon and I cut the side/ tip of my finger really bad. I almost blacked out from the blood and pain- luckily DH was home. Other than some lasting minor nerve damage it healed fine, no stitches, but I could use that knife again for months.

I have a tie between the time I fell asleep making brownies and woke up to the entire studio apartment filling up with smoke. Or the time I got a call while heating oil and returned to a fire in the kitchen!! I was screaming and ran out of the apartment. I was able to run back in and put the fire out but I was totally freaking out. I learned I'm not allowed to live alone or multitask while cooking :) haha

@StbHisMrs: Ouch! I hope you have a speedy recovery. I had a pot of boiling pasta water spilled on me as a kid. It healed really well and you can't see anything now. The blisters were quite something.

My biggest kitchen mistake happened while trying to make MIL's meatloaf recipe for DH. My mom always made hers in a loaf pan. DH told me his mom makes it on a cookie sheet. So I did that. Big fire in the oven as the fat dripped off the sides of the pan. I should have known to use something with sides like a jelly roll pan. Oops. I was 18 or 19 at the time and I've never made her meatloaf again.

Tell me your worst mistake or accident in the kitchen!

Mine happened last night, and I'll be paying for it for a couple weeks!
I set a pot of boiling pasta water on the counter and turned around to get an oven mit so I could drain it. The pot hit the floor and flooded my feet with boiling water. I've never experienced pain quite like that before, even after 3 kids
I went to the doctor today, just second degree burns, with blisters that are over 3".

So make me feel better and maybe one day I'll be able to cook pasta again, maybe!
