@jennlin821: Yep, I would see my primary just for the referral. I agree that primary care physicians aren't specialists. Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts. You have really swayed my plan of action.

@agold: don’t bother with your primary care unless you need a referral to a PT.
I don’t say this lightly - a few winters ago, I slipped on ice and fell hard on my shoulder, my hubby was a PT student at the time so he happily diagnosed me. I then went to my primary care who said “ if that’s what your husband diagnosed, then I agree with him, he knows more than I do” and I love my primary care Dr, she is amazing and thorough.

Wall me if you have any specific questions about PT and why I think it’s so important. ❤️

@agold: I don't but they don't hurt often or swell; I don't do anything strenuous really; I usually just take walks, and sometimes the elliptical, which I think is easier on my knees.
Mine are just weak, not enough cartilage holding my knee cap in place.
Of course it has been more than a decade since I've actually seen a dr. about them!

@lamariniere: swimming sounds amazing! the stationary bike was actually recommended. also, a rowing machine!

@jennlin821: you are amazing. Thanks so much. I think you've convinced me to get a THIRD opinion. Or at least go see my regular doctor again. He also mentioned strengthening the muscles. So yes.. maybe a physical therapist could be helpful so I know what I am doing. And really... the realization of "bad knees" about put me into a depression.

@agold: “bad knees” is not a thing!! Please see a physical therapist. Medical doctors are NOT trained in how to strengthen muscles. This is not something you have to live with for the rest of your life. Get help before it affects the rest of your helth.

My husband is a physical therapist, he gets referrals from doctors all the time that are incorrect!!!

@agold: have you seen a PT? I know that for my specific injury, a stationary bike would not be a good idea. I reread my earlier comment on this thread and it still stands. I have, however, noticed vast improvement in my day to day movements, especially on stairs, thanks to my swimming routine. I swim instead of doing my PT exercises and it has helped tremendously.

@josina: Do you take anything, like motrin, occasionally? I got a stationary bike, so I'm hoping that helps. The stairs are killing me! I'm so sad that I'm going to forever have this issue and I hope it doesn't impede me much.

Reviving this post!

After a few medical opinions, I think I am now someone with a bad knee. Nothing really to be done at this point, which is better than the first opinion given that was a partial knee replacement. So as a mom to two in her 30s, it sucks to have a bad knee. Any other moms out there with bad knees? I just want to know I'm not alone! :bummed:

Did you hear a pop when you twisted it? I fell skiing and tore my ACL. The swelling went down and it stopped hurting and I was moving across the country so didn't go to the doctor for several months when it was still not right. They had to do an MRI and one doctor said it was fine but the sports injury specialist could tell what it was immediately. Hearing a pop is a telltale sign and in that case you might want to see a sports injury doctor. Good luck! Hope PT helps!

PLEASE SEE A PHYSICAL THERAPIST!

If you need it, your primary care physician can give you a referral. A PT will be able to diagnose you, and then work with you to correct it.

My husband is a PT, and he frequently has patients who finally come in months after the injury and have been misdiagnosed by a doctor.
And as you are currently active and want to keep running, do not self diagnose or treat - you can create more damage!

Physical therapy isn't just for major surgery anymore, nor does it have to be several sessions on end.

Thanks for listening to a PT wife :)

So what I'd do is as follows:
I'd try two things up front. Id call an ortho doc and see how long it would take to get an appt. if it's less than a week, go that route. Many are SO busy it can take weeks. If it's going to be a wait, go see your primary and get a referral for PT. But I'd also make an ortho appt for 4-6 weeks out just in case. That way you'd be ready to go if the PT doesn't work out and waiting for an appointment won't prolong the process.
Start PT and hope for the best! If it doesn't work, by the time you get to the ortho you can say "ok, I've done 4-6 weeks of PT and X has happened". A lot of insurers won't cover an MRI unless PT has been tried. Or if you get better you just continue with PT and cancel the ortho appt.

Thank you everyone. @Littlebit7: You convinced me, calling now for an appointment. Would you just call an orthopedic clinic? Or a PT? I don't need a referral to see anyone, but I do want to avoid resting for 6 weeks and then being told they won't cover an MRI if I did something more major.

I'd see a doc first and get a referral to PT.
From what you describe it doesn't sound like an overuse injury (IT band problems are typically from muscle imbalances and poor mechanics and gradually build over time. Yours started with a specific onset of pain followed by irritation from running.). Typically a good plan of attack is a period of rest from your activity (4-6 weeks) during which time you could try PT. If after 4 to 6 weeks you see no improvement or can't return to running, you'd follow up with the doc and maybe do an MRI
A good PT should be able to diagnose pretty much what is going on. Oftentimes we don't need a doc to "diagnose" or we ignore their diagnosis and do our full evaluation and come to our own conclusion (which may or may not match the MD). The key here is finding a good PT. Perhaps one that works with runners in your area.

@josina: yikes! That sounds terrible! My doctor said surgery wasn't an option for my kind of injury. I forgot that I also have a knee brace (recommended by both the Dr and the PT). I wore it while doing my PT exercises, and when I remember, I wear it if I know we are going to be out walking for long periods of time or riding bikes. It's definitely a life-saver, but I should be much more diligent about wearing it.

@lamariniere: I'm in a similar boat with no cartilage, and not being able to run.

I'll spare you the long story but I've had 2 surgeries on my right knee, have little cartilage, and was told to wear a knee brace full time, and if I want to have another surgery they'll just give me a new knee cap.
I don't wear the knee brace and it's been 12 years since my surgery, I have had a few times where my knee cap would pop sideways, and result in my limping around for several weeks. I haven't gone back to the dr. because I don't believe they can do anything other than another surgery.
My left knee is actually the bad one now and will also pop sideways to where I can't run. I'm assuming similar issue with my cartilage. When I have issues I wear a knee brace.

I have also done lots of PT with my knee after each surgery, and that does help, so something to consider. I would also wear a brace when you run to support your knee cap. As far as seeing a dr., in my experience, there's not much they can do.

Oh no! I think you should definitely try to see a doctor.

I used to be a big runner. About 10 years ago I was out for a run and suddenly had a terrible pain in my right knee. It hurt so badly that I thought I must have torn something. I never had it looked at because I didn't have good insurance at the time. The pain subsided after about a month, but I always had knee problems after that, like mild pain and clicking going up and down stairs, bending down, most kinds of impact. I learned to deal with it, and it was more of an nuisance than actually truly painful. Fast forward to 2 years ago, I finally went to a sports medicine doctor who was appalled that I hadn't seen someone earlier. After prodding around quite a bit, he sent me to get an MRI. It turns out that I basically don't have any cartilage left behind my knee cap, and the only fix was PT. I saw a PT for about 4 months and was diligent about doing my exercises and it really helped, I could walk up and down stairs again with no pain, but I still can't run. These days, I swim 4-5 times a week and while the pain is still there occasionally, and my knees sound like I'm 60, it's not as much of a nuisance as it used to be.

Does anyone have experience with knee injuries (treating in others or sustaining one yourself)?

About 6 weeks ago, I twisted my knee while reaching for the monitor in bed. The pain was really bad that night and the next day, but then went away.

4 weeks ago I started exercising/running again, 4 times a week.

2 weeks ago I noticed pain around my knee, sometimes on either side and sometimes on the top or bottom.

A week ago my knee got so swollen I couldn't bend it comfortably. I haven't worked out this week and the swelling is coming down.

I'm fine with going to see someone, but not sure what they could tell me. How do they discern between runners knee/IT band issues and something more serious? Won't the first step be to rest it for a few weeks anyway?
