@jedeve: I don't have the wrapper. I think it was some super-cheap yarn my friend didn't want to use.

I just found a different pattern on Ravelry for a hat made with bulky yarn that I'm going to use. I still really like the hat above, so I'll still make it, but with the kind of yarn they suggest. :)

@Espion: Oh no! That sweater is awesome though. I hope you can find yarn to finish it!! :)

Oh I am knitting that same hat! The comments on Ravelry say it runs small, so you might be fine just using the bulky yarn as is, depending on how old your LO is and how big their head is. What brand of yarn is it? Do you still have the wrapper?

@Vegmama: The best thing to do is knit a small swatch with the yarn you have. It is annoying to do, but in the end it will save time with pre-planning.

ETA: http://www.knitty.com/ISSUEwinter03/FEATwin03TBP.html

This is why gauge is important: (I ran out of yarn, lol!)

A gauge tells you how many stitches in an inch. So you can knit an inch with your chubby yarn and recalculate how many stitches you need for the hat. I usually have to rewrite directions.

So if it says 16 stitches...and the original gauge is 4 stitches per inch, and your new yarn is 2 stitches per inch, then you need 8 stitches to make up the original distance

Hope that makes sense! It's been awhile since I knitted :)

I want to make a hat like this for my LO. I have bulky yarn I want to use up. http://www.purlbee.com/2014/01/23/lauras-loop-garter-ear-flap-hat/

Can someone explain how to decide how many stitches I'll need (since the needles and yarn are bigger)? How do I use the gauge to figure this out?
