I went in for monitoring and also had a similar bill. It was not included in my prenatal care or under the related complications clause. I'm honestly not sure if they will ever bill something like that under prenatal care as it wasn't a complication with the baby, but caused by a fall. Not sure if that makes sense.

Anyway, I don't know all the details of your insurance but just because they 'cover' something doesn't mean they are going to pay anything for it. They may have a discount with the provider, but it just 'goes towards your deductible' in my experience.

@DesertDreams88: My insurance states that it covers:

Maternity Services- Mother and Newborn
Includes prenatal care, delivery, postnatal care and any related complications.

I would think an accident that might affect the baby would be considered a complication... Even a trip to the ER for me would have been covered more than this was

I'd start with requesting an itemized bill then, with the medical billing codes clearly listed.

However, I imagine your insurance would be inclined to not cover it under standard prenatal care, since it was a special circumstance and not "standard" :-/

I had a similar situation that required an hour of so of monitoring at the hospital and was then released and my bill was $1800. I didn't try to lower it. I can't remember what the code was that they used. I set up a payment plan with the hospital for that bill and my L&D charges that came a month or two later.

Oh, and my OB monitored from home. He's in network, as is the hospital. His charges were fully covered separately. The bill is just for the hospital stay of one hour.

@DesertDreams88: I think that's what's bugging me...there's no specific code on my EOB or bill...just "OP MISC SERVICES"

Like my insurance is going to want to cover anything miscellaneous...

When I was in a very-minor car accident and went to the hospital for LO1 at 28 weeks, they required 4 hours of monitoring (on the machine, meaning, any time doing ultrasounds or bathroom breaks etc didn't count); urine checks, bloodwork, and an ultrasound. The total bill was about $800, on a HDHP.

I didn't push it because it was similar to an ER bill amount I had gotten a year before, for similar services with our miscarriage. I had tried to protest and lower the miscarriage bill but no luck - I was serviced by an out-of-network OB at the in-network hospital, so there was an extra $600 charge for her in addition to the hospital bill of about $800.

The only success I have with lowering hospital bills was by resisting the bill for awhile / questioning it / asking for an itemized list and specific codes on the list, and then asking for a cash discount because I just couldn't accept a $2000 bill for 8 hours in the ER for dehydration.

Wondering if anyone has been in a similar situation and gotten charges reduced...

I wouldn't be so worried if the claim was in the current calendar year, because I expect we'll hit the deductible and OOP max this year anyway...but In late december, I fell face first on the kitchen tile. We weren't sure if I landed on my belly or not (I ended up face down, but weren't sure if I smacked it or just sort of slid onto it), so we went to L&D for monitoring to make sure everything was ok.

I just got the bill. OP Misc. Services for $500. That code seems awfully vague, and I'm wondering if it mentioned prenatal or OB or L&D if my insurance might cover more of it?

Has anyone been successful at getting a L&D monitoring bill lowered?
