I was very active when I became pregnant so I was an above average pregnant woman but these are things I specifically did in addition to normal workouts:
1. I would squat down low and put my arms inside my legs and push them out wide. It is supposed to help you avoid tearing. I did it a few times a week towards the end and didn't tear.
2. I heard people say their upper body was sore from pulling back on their legs while pushing so I looped a workout band around a pole, sat down, grabbed the ends with each hand and pulled the band back towards my body to simulate pulling. I wasn't sore after labor.

No idea if those things helped or if it was just luck/me being active but I will do those again when pregnant.

Not to thread jack, but did any of you who found prenatal yoga helpful use a video or app rather than a class? Unfortunately with my work schedule the next few months I don't think a class is happening, but I would love to do some stretching/relaxation/strengthening a few times a week.

I loved prenatal yoga this time around! And then spent most of my labor on hands and knees doing cat/cow poses and hip circles, it really helped me dilate/baby move down

Walk walk walk!! I think my daily 45 min walks had a lot to do with my easy labor. It was also a nice time to connect with my baby and I used that time to visualize how I wanted my labor to go.

@Anya: I did 300 squats a day with LO1. I survived my 51 hour labor but it might not have been 51 hours if my muscles weren't so tight. IDK but I didn't do it with #2.

Walk!! For comfort an exercise ball may be nice. You have to balance yourself on their which is a work out in its self.

Also swimming was amazing when I was pregnant. Great low impact. It helped relieve all the aches and pains. If you can, swim some laps.

@MrsADS: that makes me feel so much better! My pelvis is also already killing me, that's part of what inspired this thread.

@Pollywog: last time I went to prenatal yoga once and then did some online videos maybe 10 times. It's not my favorite. But yes, squats!!! I plan to start like now!

@Ina85: @maddyz: thank you!

I had preterm labor and so I was on bedrest/activity restriction for most of my 3rd tri, so I was in terrrrrible shape. About 36 weeks they let me do whatever I want. I went to our large indoor mall and walked it every single day for 30-45 minutes. It was rough, my baby was SO low I had to stop every 5-10 minutes and sit for a little while because I thought my pelvis was going to snap in half. Lol. But I do think it helped me have an easier labor, even though I was in such bad shape before. My labor was only about 6.5 hours and 20 mins of pushing.

@mrsbubbletea: walk. Just walk and prenatal yoga if you want (my yoga class was fairly worthless other than the squats) . Walk hills, walk stairs, being as active as possible was what kept me in great shape.

I exercised through my whole pregnancy and stretched but near the end, I could really only bear walking and the exercise bike. I would do the elliptical as well when I could no longer run when I got further along. Yoga sounds good too and walking is always good!

I think walking is great. Some general stretching would also be good. And should feel good too!

@Anya: I hadn't heard that but good idea! I was thinking of squats. Not sure how much good thinking of them would be versus actually doing them... thanks for the luck! I am starting to get a little nervous!!

What do you think is the best way to prep your body for labor with approximately 11 weeks to go? I feel like I am really out of shape, and having so much pelvic pain, that worries me for the "marathon" of delivery! I wasn't exactly overweight before this pregnancy, but I had wanted to be healthier and I don't do regular exercise (cardio or strength training). Moderately active with a toddler and a job where I usually spend my shift on my feet.

My only ideas are make an effort to walk as much as possible, every day, and look into some prenatal yoga youtube videos? Any suggestions?
