I didn't stay "tuned in" before LO & now I really don't! Other than hearing some things on radio or on FB or here, or from family, I'm really out of touch with pop culture. I don't really care, for the most part, about the pop culture stuff, but kind of miss having regular network or cable TV for (actual) news, but certainly go look online for that when I need/think to.

I think you prioritize what is important to you. I listen to Podcasts and catch up on news (both real and celebrity) at work, however I work in social media so it's readily available to me. I watch shows at night after the girls are in bed. I don't think being a parent means I need to be cut off from the world, I just have to pick and choose what I engage in. I still read frequently too, got to keep my brain going and this is my unwind time.

I listen to podcasts most mornings on my commute. I definitely makes the time go faster, though I have a couple I REALLY like and wish would come out more often, and some that are more filler but come out pretty frequently.

I usually watch 1-2 tv shows a night. But that's because I'm pregnant and DH taken over nightly duties with DS, whereas we used to switch off for bed time. But in general, DH and I watch 1 tv show together at night. I enjoy tv a lot, it helps relax me and turn my brain off. As for celebrities, I have no interest and don't follow that stuff. I keep relatively up to date on current events thanks to postings here, and FB.

There's no crime in not being interested in tv or celebs or podcasts. But I do think it's weird that your friend constantly wants to discuss things that hold no interest for you. I will occasionally tell my husband about something I heard on a podcast, but mostly because I think he'll find it interesting. I listen to some very history focused ones and I know he couldn't care less about those, so I don't bother to bring them up, even though I think they're pretty interesting.

Yes after having kids I am so "out" of pop culture, at least in terms of entertainment. I used to know what's coming out in the theaters and know what I want to watch, and I do buy gossip magazines occasionally to keep up with the celebrity gossips (haha). After I had a child (4.5 years old now), I have no idea who are all those people on the gossip magazines and have no motivation to find out about them. Recently we were on an international trip/flight. I usually would be watching new movies that I haven't watched nonstop - this time around I was just flipping over and over, had no idea about these movies and had no interest in watching any of them. Like @Adira: said though, I do prioritize and recently I've been focusing my energy on cooking, finding healthy and tasty and easy recipes for my family, and working out to stay in shape.

@rachiecakes: this is me too. I haven't regularly watched TV since I was 14 and haven't even owned a TV since college. I am interested in current events and try to keep up with the news, but I just draw a blank stare when people start talking about pop culture topics. And like @PinkElephant: I've been out of the US for a long time, so I haven't been immersed in US pop culture. If I do happen to see People-y type headlines, I rarely know who the celebs are or what they are famous for (I'm still trying to figure out why the Kardashians are famous :silly: !!!).

I don't keep up with it as much as I used to (I used to read Perez Hilton every single day!), but I feel like I keep up with it regularly. And I totally listen to podcasts on my commute. I was really into the whole Serial/Undisclosed stuff and DH and I binge-watched Making a Murderer when it came out. Also, the trending topics on Facebook really helps.

When I read on HB that the actress who plays Rory Gilmore had a baby I said to my husband "the daughter from Gilmore Girls who was the lady in Mad Men who got shock treatments had a baby with the rich guy whose dad died in the plane crash who was Angel's son from Buffy!". He stared blankly at me.

When it comes to real news I try to listen to the radio during the day but it's so frequently just about the election that I get frustrated and bored. I used to pay for Marc Maron's podcast but I stopped listening when I stopped working after I became a SAHM (no commute anymore).

Also I kept putting my phone down when trying to respond to this because my baby wanted to play! Relevant! So I keep up with about 30% of what I used to and most of that is the stuff I love so it's the least relatable things.

Yeah I don't have time Or care for it these days. I do try and read trending stories though or at least headlines so I semi know what's going on in the world. I work outside of the home, so it's important to me to at least be able to semi relate to my coworkers and what they are interested in. I have pretty much picked a few things that the majority follow and try and randomly stay on top of what's happening without watching. I like to at least pretend my whole life isn't about work and playgrounds and dirty diapers!

I don't have the time to watch as much TV as I used to, or go to talks or live events like I did pre-kids, but I wouldn't say having kids has squashed my interest in things outside of parenting. If anything, I need those defined and low-key mental breaks for something that isn't parenting or work. I do plenty of each, every single day.

I keep up with People online and some other celeb sites. It takes maybe 45 seconds to scan them during lunch and a few extra minutes to read up on the particularly juicy stories so it isn't like it has to take up a lot of time or brain space to stay moderately current. I read the legit news a lot, but I don't see that in the same realm as "pop culture" at all - it's just part of life and being aware of my world.

I think pop culture stuff is actually a really nice diversion to work and things that are "brain-intensive". Plus, there are some great TV shows out there! I have zero desire to listen to parenting podcasts and pour over various multiple parenting books; that sounds about as fun as a root canal! To each their own :silly:

I wasn't even interested before having kids. There are so many more important things to be consumed with. I do listen to a few podcasts but I don't think many of them fall under popular culture. But I've never been one for that kind of thing so maybe I'm not the one to ask.

One of my friends said to me recently, "Don't you find you mainly want to hang out with other moms and talk about that with them now?" My answer was NO! So much mental space is taken up with parenting, and I my DH and I talk a lot about our daughter. So I like talking about things outside parenting and children.

I wouldn't claim to be totally up on pop culture--I don't recognize most famous people these days. But I do love getting into TV series, we watch movies on Amazon, I read news blogs, etc.

@Chillybear: I forgot about Perez! I used to look at Go Fug Yourself and Suri's Burn Book. Not sure if those are popular anymore.

I felt the same way, in fact, I think I stopped watching TV for about 5 years. And I was an addict. I'd watch shows no one had any business watching. Regularly. I also had a subscription to US Weekly, people knew not to bother me on Friday because that's when my advance copy arrived.

Now, I can't even name a singer on the radio unless it's from the 70s. Its not that I am not interested, it's just that I have a lot less time to indulge. I am more choosy about the shows I might watch, the magazines I read (Time has replaced US weekly), etc.

i'm so lost on most pop-culture topics… Doesn't help that I also lived out of the US for about eight years, so I feel like I am still catching up on TV, music, and am still amazed by everything I can do electronically/online here. I find that if I just admitting what I don't now, and ask questions to find out more if it's something I'm genuinely interested in, my friends are more than happy to catch me up. And if there irritated by my ignorance, then there probably not someone I want to hang out with anyway.I make time for a few reality show indulgences during the occasional nap or when my husband has nighttime work functions! At this point though, I think my mom knows more about reality TV than I do, which is sort of hilarious… She's never been into that but in her retirement she and my dad what things I never imagined they would.

I still knit, mainly on the train as well. I find the time for my sanity sake especially during this rough period in our lives right now. It's part of my self care.

I kinda go back and forth. I've been listening to a lot of music and podcasts lately, but I'm not up on celebrity gossip. I guess what's changed is that down time is less frequent so I've streamlined my pop culture intake to stuff I'm really into - but what I'm into changes from time to time.

Also going to suggest the Skimm email.
I socialize for my job, so I feel like I have to be well-versed on pop culture. Some things (bachelor, reality tv shows, podcasts) I have zero interest in. However, I try to stay aware of all the things so I can converse. Reading Yahoo's front page, skimming Buzzfeed on my phone seems to help here.

If this friendship is important, maybe just zone in on one area for example. (Like I know who the crazy dude on The Bachelorette is bc one account LOVES it although I have never tuned in) Search it on Buzzfeed while you are normally on pinterest or fb or here!

I try to keep up with things that are going on at least a little bit, but if I don't have any time, taking 5 minutes to read this overview helps me feel more "with it".

I guess I just imagine it sounds just like when someone talks about their kids/parenting all the time and the other party doesn't have kids?

I don't watch TV or follow any programs and I never have, even before kids, but I'll entertain a friend that wants to tell me about a good one. Even if I know I'll never watch/listen myself. I do like to hear what they like about it.

Maybe find a topic where you have some common ground - food? shopping? diet? You can always try to redirect the conversation if you're zoning out on the pop culture convos :silly:

@Adira: haha so true. And just like you I still read and watch a very few select shows with my husband (so we can count it as together time). I just don't have the time or desire to listen to random podcasts, watch all the award shows, watch random reality television or the 5 new netflix series or whatever. I think the other contributing factor to this is that my husband is not interested in any of that stuff either so we don't do those things together and with the little bit of free time we have, we really try to maximize it so we're spending quality time together.

I think everyone prioritizes what is important to them. I have two kids, but I still try to keep up with my favorite shows, politics, and read books. But I don't prioritize exercising, yard work, or cleaning the house, haha. It is what it is.
