In hospital and visit to LC at my OB free or small copy, in house, no. Depending on where you live there may be free BFing support groups run by LCs.

While in the hospital they were free, after discharge they were not. However, my insurance covered LC from the local Children's Hospitals. I found more support through LLL though.

@Anagram: still cool but I thought you meant your hospital provided that service as part of your birth. :)

@jetsa: The ACA specifies that insurance cover some type of lactation services.

@MrsH: I called my insurance company ahead of time and I happened to get a really knowledgeable person on the phone that said it would be covered and said it would be no problem. There are no "in network" LCs in my area at all, so I hired the LC at my hospital who does home visits on the side and she provided me with a superbill to submit to my insurance.

HOWEVER, they denied it at first saying she wasn't "in network", so I had to call them back and request a manager and explain (again) that there are no in network LCs in my area and they are *required* by law to cover a service if I have no other in network options. So then they covered it.

It saved my $200, so it was totally worth it.

@Anagram: this is awesome, they all should.

I used the one at a local hospital (not the one I delivered at) and it was free, also a natural boutique also free. Neither was ibclc certified and I think that would have helped me so I would have paid a lot for one but they're aren't any local.

No. They said I'd have to go to the hospital I delivered at, which is pretty far away, or take a breastfeeding class and ask questions there.

Yes and no.
The lactation consultants from the hospital and at my ped's office were covered by insurance, so our visits were free, or cost a small co-pay.
The in home lactation consultant we hired was not covered. Still totally worth it.
