@Tanjowen: It's mostly gone away! We cut dairy out and his poop started to...reform some. We reintroduced milk yesterday and today his poop was almost normal (not totally, but *light years* better). So I'm guessing it was some kind of bug or something? It was weird, though, he never showed any pain or discomfort, his butt was never red...only symptom at all was the diarrhea.

His teacher told me today that another kid at school has started having the same problem, but his butt is very raw.

I hope your LO feels better ASAP!

@lovehoneybee: Did you ever find out what was going on, or did it go away? My LO has started having terrible big runny poops this week out of nowhere. No temperature, not rashes, no vomiting, but his appetite is nil.

I don't know if it's a stomach bug or something else. :bummed:

@lovehoneybee: that's not selfish, it'd be easier on your lo too if it's just a bug. Hope you have answers soon! Or it just goes away!

@kiddosc: I feel like we talked about this at some point before, because we did Alina too (twice actually). Seemed to work the first time, but then 10 months later the symptoms came back and we did another round, which did nothing. So that's how we ended up doing more invasive testing. But I'm glad your kiddo cleared up fully with it!

We went through a similar illness when E was two. He had nasty diarrhea and would vomit once a day, usually in bed at night. He acted totally normal otherwise. I had him into the ped like three times in two weeks. They finally prescribed him an antiparasitic medication (Alinia) even though they weren't finding any parasites in his stool. He was 100% in 48 hours.

@lovehoneybee: If it keeps coming, I'm sure they'll check for parasites, too. I'm pretty sure I've taken more than 50 stool samples in the past year and I'm not 100% sure what he had didn't start out as a parasit that just triggered the LI, since his first blood sample did have a high white blood cell count. It's just hard to find them sometimes. But after an MRI, and endoscopy and literally a year of testing, I am so relieved that it's most likely just a simple case of GERD and LI. While DS's vomit was at night, he had that same thing where his food wasn't digested and it was like 8 hours after he ate. I was also relieved that changing his diet around hasn't been too bad, especially since he is literally the pickiest child ever (most likely because he was always feeling bad after eating). Hopefully E feels better soon!

@BananaPancakes: Well the nurse called me back and she wants me to try bulking up his poop for a few days...pasta, rice, bread, etc, and if there's no improvement in a few days to call back and they'll bring him and a stool sample. I'm skeptical that'll work, but willing to try, of course...and thanks, your last comment gave me a bit of relief...I'm pretty overwhelmed by the whole idea.

@lovehoneybee: It isn't that bad! I had to learn the difference, but lactose intolerance isn't the same as a dairy allergy. Most people who are LI are fine with butter and many are even fine with yogurt. We literally just switched to Lactaid milk, Cabot cheese, and soy yogurt, and try to keep the dry milk in processed food (like his favorite cereal bars from Kashi) to a minimum and he's been doing great. Oh, we did also switch him from goldfish to pretzels. Only the really lactose intolerant need to cut out all dairy in a very strict manner.

@sera_87: @BananaPancakes: I'm waiting for a call back from the pedi. Ugh, I really hope it's not that...I'm so lazy to think about how to cut dairy out of the things I cook! Butter is a staple! (of course I will...)

@pinkb: @kodybear: @2littlepumpkins: Selfishly, I really hope it's just a bug!

Not sure if you've followed along at all with DS's battle over the past year, but somewhat similar circumstances, and ended up being lactose intolerance and GERD. Changed his diet about 2 months ago now, and he's been doing fantastic. I'd check with your pediatrician, but LI is what I'm thinking. And yes, it came out of nowhere for us and will get worse as they get older.

Dairy can also make a stomach bug seem worse so it's hard to say. Could be an infection/virus or lactose or some other sensitivity. :( The nurse from lo's ped's office did tell me once that a stomach bug could present with just diarrhea sometimes. Hopefully it's that and not lactose.

I'm pretty sure my lo is lactose intolerant and she also was having issues with milk since she was 1 (she's 2.5 now). Even if your lo developed it later I don't feel like it would come on so strong so fast. It kind of sounds like a stomach bug to me. My lo had something like that as an infant with no other symptoms. For sure I'd give him some probiotics which helps my lo when she has diarrhea!

That sounds like lactose (at least from my experience) but I don't know if it would just randomly start like that. With A it was as soon as we started him on WCM (at 1year) that he started having issues.

I googled and found this: "Even if you don't have trouble with lactose now, there's a chance you might someday. Why? Because your body starts making less lactase when you're around 2 years old. The older you get, the more likely it is that you could have trouble digesting dairy foods."

Awe I hope it gets better soon.

The only experience I have had is DD had a stomach bug for almost 2 weeks, only issue was loose stool. After talking with her Dr we started her on probiotics and it finally cleared up.

I'm going to be calling E's pedi on Monday, but I was curious what the Bee thought.

E will be three in a few weeks. The past week and a half he's started having some digestive issues. Lots of really smelly farts (like...D gave me an accusing look when E went from my lap to his because he thought I had ignored a poopy diaper smelly). A week ago he woke up having thrown up a ton all over his bed (I could still make out what he ate for lunch 12 hours before). Several times this week he's had super big, very very loose (and very smelly) poops. Twice he's woke up from a nap/night sleep with a completely full diaper. This morning there was probably....at least 3 full cups of super loose poop. It was coming out of everywhere, and soaked through his sheets and mattress pad (side note: pregnancy nose and poop juice don't mix).

I thought maybe it was just a stomach thing, but he seems perfectly fine otherwise. Sleep is normal, mood and energy are normal, no fevers or rashes or anything. But if it was an intolerance thing would it randomly start? This early? He's been drinking WCM for just about 2 years, and we've never had a problem, and he hasn't eaten anything new or unusual the past few weeks.

Like I said, I'm going to call on Monday and get her opinion, and cut milk for now and see what happens (he likes almond milk at least), but I just wanted to see what other people thought.
