@regberadaisy: It's about 15-20 minutes. I grew up just south of Saratoga and used to work there every summer :). Saratoga is a lot nicer than Lake George, but way more expensive during racing season. Lake George doesn't have many hotels with beaches, but there is the public beach in town called the "million dollar beach."

There are lots of other lakes in the area since it's the Adirondacks, and a lot have cute little main street areas, but Lake George is definitely the biggest.

aw, we  Lake George and used to have a vacation house in that area!

There's a Six Flags with a water park in it, the Great Escape. They also have a lodge with an indoor water park there that's really fun!

Even though we sold our house, we still visit a few times a year in the summer to see the races in Saratoga Springs. Saratoga is beautiful! All the parks and a giant carousel. Lots of cute shops & restaurants.

So much fun up there. I wish it was summer!

Would definitely recommend going to Lake George with kids and family. If you go on a holiday weekend like 4th of July you can expect to pay a high premium for a room but otherwise it is all reasonable. Staying in a "resort" that has a pool and is right on the lake is fun and there are some that are walking distance to town. You can go farther north toward Bolton Landing and there are some nice places to stay with cabins. Like said above, mini golf, arcade, boat tours, 6 flags, boating, hiking. Lots to do! If you have any more specific questions feel free to PM me.

No it's not expensive. It depends on what kind of experience you want as far as accommodations. Hampton Inn or more of a resort? There is tons to do on the strip there. Mini golf, glass bottom boats, a cool fort to tour, arcade, touristy stores... I don't know if 6 flags is still there. It's one of the best upstate areas for families...

Um, can we come with?! lol! Looove Lake George!

I went up twice before kids... The water there is AMAZING.

I think the "bottom" part of the lake is where the town is... Really active and fun in the summer! I think some vacation homes can be expensive. Hotel is def "expensive". I stayed in one when I was in a wedding one summer.

I'm dreaming of going on a long weekend trip to a beach this summer with the girls. Looking for something drive-able from us and Lake George was suggested.

I think some have been or are even from the area.

Any tips on where to stay, things to do, places to eat, weekends to avoid? Obviously a holiday weekend is ideal for taking off less days off...

Is it an expensive area?
