We've also used it for travel and other things so I don't really regret it but I bet small would have been ok. It held up great for those two years. It is starting to look worn, so we bought a PBk one this time, but I can already tell that I like the Lands End backpacks better. My daughter used it for K last year and will use it for 1st and probably 2nd. It has held up amazingly. It holds all of her K paperwork and folders, her lunch bag, 2 water bottles and a change of clothes comfortably.
