Wow I guess these cysts are fairly common. Hopefully mine doesn't cause issues either and goes away like many of yours.

@catomd00: Ooh good luck at your anatomy scan! I hope yours has shrunk or disappeared too. That's ironic, I had a weird cycle when I got pregnant this time too. This pregnancy in general has just felt very different than my first. Thanks for the tips on the twisting ovary thing. I had thought it would be a constant pain, so I'll definitely be vigilant to any sharp pains even if it only lasts a short while.

@tiramisu: I have an almost 2 year old and no issues with her! They said it was because when I ovulated the sac or whatever didn't fully rupture so it filled with fluid? Very odd because the moments before I got pregnant I had a very weird long cycle and the month i got pregnant I had very painful ovulation on the same side as the cyst. I get some pinching pain from it from time to time but they said that's normal. They did say if I have severe pain even if it only lasts a few minutes to go in right away. The ovary tends to start twisting and untwisting for some time before it fully twists, so that's you're warning sign. You definitely don't want to wait since you're at risk of losing your ovary if the torsion goes on too long. But it won't impact pregnancy or delivery. I'm having my anatomy scan in 2 weeks, so I'll let you known if it shrinks or is gone yet!

@tiramisu: I had two on one ovary last time. One was 6 and one was 4. That was at 6w. They had me follow up on it at 13w with another ultrasound and they were gone by then. I think they are fairly common, but ones of a bigger size get watched more closely.

@tiramisu: They found a large cyst at my first ultrasound and Doctor said it was bigger than the pregnancy at that point. They did a few extra ultrasounds during my first and second trimesters to monitor it. But it caused no problems at all.

I have one, they mentioned it at my first appointment, but I was not told how large it is. They took a photo of it, I assume to compare the size at my next appointment, but the NP didn't express too much concern. She did say I could experience some pain from it, but knock on wood, I haven't yet.

@LuLu Mom: thanks for sharing. Happy to hear yours shrunk and eventually went away too. My doctor also mentioned it could twist my ovary ( cue freak out!) and said to go to the ER if I get sharp pain. I feel a little better knowing you ladies with similar experiences didnt have major issues with the cyst and had healthy outcomes for you and baby!

@tiramisu: Yep! I had an 8 cm with my first, I was put on pelvic rest for my entire pregnancy. It had shrunk down to 1/2 size by my 20 week, and gone when I had my C-section. For my second I had a 6 cm and it once again shrunk by the time I delivered. They say it was hormones causing it.

Edit: I also had an additional scan with each pregnancy between 12 and 20 to make sure it was shrinking. I was told it could twist so if I had a sharp pain to go to ER immediately, but I never had any issues.

@catomd00: thanks for sharing your experience and glad to hear it hasn't been an issue in your pregnancy. It is super scary seeing the giant black hole on the ultrasound. I have a DD whose about 1.5 and I don't recall having this with her. Congrats on your pregnancy too and hope it continues to go well!

@Run2shore: Congratulations on your new baby! Glad to hear all turned out well and the cyst went away. Gives me hope!

@runnerd: My doctor mentioned too that she didn't think it was a risk to the baby, but I couldn't help but be worried either. It looked so big, I thought it might squash the baby.

@Astro Bee: Glad to hear yours shrunk too. I think doctor will check mine again at my 12 week ultrasound (which I feel is so far away). But I guess hopefully that's a good thing if she isn't that concerned. She also said the cyst was on the ovary I probably ovulated from and it helps to sustain the pregnancy till the placenta kicks in. Weird though, I don't remember having a cyst with my 1st LO.

I had one on my ovary at my 12 week ultrasound - 7 or 8 cm. I was told that it was probably the one I ovulated from that month. At my next ultrasound a couple of months later it was at 5 cm, and kept shrinking.

I was never told how big mine was, but it was big enough that they wanted a follow up ultrasound to make sure it was getting smaller, and I was having pain/sensitivity in the region where it was. My research was there wasn't a risk to baby, but worse case scenario it could cause some bleeding or having to have a small surgery to remove if causing issues

Similar situation. Large Cyst discovered around 20 weeks...long story short, it went away on its own. Apparently it's very common, and rarely becomes problematic. I am now 1 month post-partum with healthy baby girl.

I'm 20 weeks and have a 9.5 cm cyst on my ovary. I have had one extra ultrasound to explore it after the initi dating scan they found it. No one is concerned at this point. They basically told me that if I have severe pain to go to L&D immediately and that's it. They said it could go away on its own or it could not. I was really worried too at first but it's pretty common and usually no big deal. It's super scary looking when they see this gigantic black hole - mines about the size of a grapefruit! Congrats on baby!

Did anyone have a big cyst on their ovary during early pregnancy? I'm about 7 weeks and my doctor just found a fairly big one (5cm) on one of my ovaries during the ultrasound. It was so huge compared to the baby/gestational sac.

I'm trying hard not to freak out. Anyone have a similar experience?
