I didn't buy a diaper bag at first and used my sturdy J.Crew tote. It was okay at first, but I found it difficult to dig through to find something. Then I bought a diaper bag that was on super sale, and I used it for way too long. It was heavy, difficult to access, and was a pain to carry. I ended up using an old North Face book bag, and it is perfect for me in every way (small & light weight, lots of compartments, ease of wearing it on my back, etc).

Basically it's a lot of trial and error. I say use your bag and don't waste money on a diaper bag right away. You'll figure out what your needs are once your baby arrives, and you can adjust accordingly.

Thank for all your input. I really shouldn't care too much, it's just that people are already so different here and the pull for conformity is just so strong.

But I think I will use it! My only other alternative is to use my husband's old duffel bag that's actually smaller. Yeh, we're cheap like that! Haha! I figure I'll spend my money on other essentials.

We'll almost always go out with a stroller so all the diapers/poop bags will go underneath, it "shouldn't" be so messy. But we'll see!

We also haven't bought a stroller yet and the ones they have here usually come with a bag, so I think I've now officially taken it off the list.

Thanks again!!!

I have a Kate Spade nylon (messenger) diaper bag. Lots and lots of pockets and it stays clean because it's SO easy to use!
You should use whatever you want. Who cares what other people think! :) The only thing is.. it's bound to get dirty. If it's monogram canvas, you should be able to wipe it down easily.

I use a messenger bag from LeSportSac. I actually own a few of the more expensive "diaper" bags and regret buying every single one. The messenger bag has pockets and compartments but the most important thing is the strap! I like being able to wear it cross body and also have my husband tote it around too. Plus it's ultra light and waterproof. I plan on buying another one (maybe slightly bigger) for when we have baby #2.

I actually find bags that are compartmentalized make it harder for me to be organized. The pockets are never the right size for what I need so stuff gets spread around. Instead, I use gallon ziplock bags and sort my stuff that way. One bag is food, one is toys, one is change of clothes, etc.

I don't keep diapers in my diaper bag, that's in a separate changing pod that lives under the stroller. If I am without the stroller, I have a ziplock in my bag with diapering supplies.

I'm not a mom but I'm expecting. I currently have the Louis Vuitton Neverfull. I love it because it holds EVERYTHING (I'll just take out the laptop) - I'm not too picky about spilling things on it so I'm not too concerned about the occasional spill, etc. It actually wipes up pretty nicely so I plan to continue to use this tote but I'll add an insert with pockets to hold the baby stuff. I found this one from Pishposh Mommy that I'm planning to try: http://pishposhmommy.com/

Who knows though...I might end up being like Tina's friend :)

Oh and I also keep my version of wet bags folded up in a baggie in whatever bag I use. My version is ziplock bags with the slider closing. I love those things.

For me, a diaper bag has to 1) have plenty of pockets, because finding something you need 2 seconds ago while holding a screaming baby is important, and 2) be cleaned easily. You won't believe the amount of spills, leaks, etc etc etc. A friend of mine bought an LV neverfull, claiming she'd use it as a diaper bag so it was worth it, but I'd never do that-- one spill of breastmilk and that bag is ruined forever. (After her baby was born, she eventually bought a Marc Jacobs diaper bag, and now she uses a Skip Hop. It was kinda funny seeing that progression!)

That being said, once baby is done with bottles, it's a lot easier to use regular purses. I used a Longchamp large tote after RJ stopped with bottles because the only leakable thing was his water sippy cup. I'd just buy cow's milk at the convenience store or restaurant for milk and throw it out after he was done. The Longchamp still took a beating though... I need to wash it :T

@Rubies: Have you thought about getting a wet bag? We have one that we put her cloth diapers in and if she gets poo on any clothes or has a bad spit up and we have to change her, everything goes in there. Keeps the diaper bag nice and clean. They also have little disposable bags that you can put soiled stuff in.

I voted for "buy a diaper bag" but I don't think it's obnoxious if you don't! I just voted for buying one only because, depending on what you put in it, a diaper bag can get quite heavy and a designer bag has a bit of weight to it as is, no? Also, my diaper bag is machine washable just in case. I had to put a poopy diaper in my diaper bag because I wasn't anywhere near a garbage can at the time...I couldn't imagine putting THAT into my expensive bag!

*But*, if you're all fine with that, then rock your bag and don't worry what other people thing!

As long as it works for you thats what matters. I dont think anyone will comment on it. These days a lot of modern diaper bags dont look like obvious diaper bags, so no one will really no the difference. the only thing is, if the bag is a really nice expensive bag do you want to risk getting it ruined with baby stuff spilling on it?

I say use it. I see people using designer bags as diaper bags and even gym bags all the time. I've been guilty of doing that, too, so I am a little biased. And if you have that great organizer thing it would work. Also, just be OK if you get spilled milk, vomit, possibly other things on it ... never know with these kids!

@artbee: No pockets at all, except for a 2 cell phone type compartments and an inside zipper compartment. But I plan to use an organizer with it that I bought previously for another bag (old laptop-like bag that's now out of commission).

I bought it from this sweet, old lady on Etsy:

The only reason I bought a diaper bag was because it's lined and I'm a stuff spiller :) The Vera Bradley website has a bunch of 'retire' patterns that you can get for $40, so that's what I did. It's cute, well made and lined.

Does it have lots of pockets? I use a 31 bag, the organizing utility tote. It's not a diaper bag, but it's easy to clean and has lots of pocets on the outside so it's easy to find things in a hurry. I wouldn't worry about it being a "real" diaper bag as long as it works for you.

I'm thinking of using a very large monogram-type bag as a baby bag. It's not something I bought specifically for baby, I got it as a Christmas gift from my Mom 2 years ago. It's actually not something I would buy for myself and I don't use it because it's so damn big! I figure this would be the only time to actually get some use out of it. Plus, I'm too cheap to buy a real diaper bag if this one would definitely do.

Thing is, we live in a really small town and I'm afraid I'd be judged. I come from a bigger city where no one would even bat an eyelid but a designer bag as a diaper may not be the norm here.

Would you sport it anyway or buy a real diaper bag instead? Keep in mind that if I don't use it now, I'll probably never use it and it's a damn shame cause it's a nice bag.
