We've been at the 98-99 percentile the entire time. Her head is biiiiig (I think a lot of the November babies have huge heads!). I'm sure it'll be nothing to worry about!

@Chillybear: oh, yes. My DH's head was so big in utero that the doctors thought he was a giant. My head is also pretty big. LO's head is in the 98th percentile currently at one year old.

Our former pediatrician's office must have measured her head incorrectly at one point because she dropped percentiles and then zoomed back up. Our new pediatrician sent R for a head sonogram to rule out hydrocephaly. That was pretty scary. But she just has a big head.

@chillybear: i'm sure it's nothing to worry about, but it's good that you are going to re-check in a few months. It could have been off at the last appointment, who knows?
My LO's weight got recorded wrong (probably - it was higher than expected and he jumped up in percentile) at his 9 month appointment, so then when we went back a month later for something unrelated, it looked like he had lost weight. We kept an eye on it for a month or so, and he kept gaining normally and stayed at the percentile he had been at from 6 months, so it looked like the weight at 9 months was probably wrong. But it did worry us for awhile.

@Chillybear: ones of C's nicknames is Bighead. :) She is only 80% for head circ but since she is 50th for weight and 33rd for height, it's kinda big. I think it's cute.

@Chuckles: The nurse measured first, but when he saw the number he remeasured himself and got the same number... so unless it was a little off at the 6 month appt... who knows? It happened with her height

From the moment we announced our pregnancy to my husband's family, all I heard was how big all their babies' heads are. And, no surprise, our little guy is in the 10th percentile for weight and the 95th percentile for head circumference. Because an increase in head size can signal something is wrong, it's good to keep an eye on it, but our pediatrician was also saying that where the tape measure gets placed can make a big difference and can vary a lot between whichever doctor or nurse happens to take the measurement. So there can be variability because of that.

@Chillybear: yes! I always have a hard time finding hats that are comfortable. My husband and I were searching for some before a vacation last year. The women's hats just sit on top of my head. He kept making me try things on for his amusement.

My LO's head has always been in the 99.99 percentile - no joke. Her head measured 2 weeks ahead of her body in utero! But then you look at my husband, who wears size XLL hats and can never find frames that fit his face. She has gotten a head ultrasound to be safe, and it was followed closely for the first few months. My pediatrician is not concerned as the ultrasound came back fine and she says that as long as LO stays on her own curve, it's fine. LO has been diagnosed with "familial macrocephaly," which basically means her big head is due to genetics. If I remember correctly, I think it becomes worrisome if there is a sudden increase in head size, but I'm not sure in increase from 90 to 100 is considered a sudden increase. Try not to worry (although I know it's impossible, and I still worry about her big head today!) and yes, Dr. Google is the worst!

Another member of the big head club, right here. Or as I like to refer to it, mondo noggin' :)

When I was born my mom said that the nurse questioned the size of my head. My mom pointed at my dad and the nurse said, "Oh. I see."

During my pregnancy I was told my little guy's head was measuring big, I told them it runs in the family. My son was born early and his head was just average then. Now, 8 months later, I'd say it's definitely a good size. I can't recall the percentage from his 6 month appt, but it's the only curve that he's excelling at. I expect he'll be pretty high on the curve at 9 months.

All this to say, you're not alone. Stay away from google. If mondo noggins run in your family, just have a picture handy at the doctor's office :)

DS since birth (14 inches) and until now 19 months has always always been 99+ on his head circumference. DH and I both have big heads and anticipated that he would as well. I hope that as in our case that it's a case of genetics and nothing serious!!

Here is an article about benign familial megalencephaly; it discusses it in normal cases. "It is important to recognise this so as to avoid unnecessary investigation and anxiety about normal children with large heads"

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC1545478/

Try not to worry too much, lady! I know, easier said than done, though.

@Happygal: We made her 1 year appointment and will discuss it then but he offered we could come in to be measured in 6 weeks if we wanted to but he didnt think it was necessary.

I always have trouble finding hats that fit my head but i also have a lot of hair. Maybe i should measure my head

I come from a family of big heads. A pediatrician was once concerned about my nephew's head, then he looked at my sister and measured hers. When she checked out, she saw he had written in the chart "familial megalencephaly"--basically, big heads run in this family. Hopefully everything will check out just fine for your baby as well! You are wise to stay away from Google on this one. Do you have a follow up visit scheduled?

My daughter's head has measured in the 90th percentile since she was born. Yesterday at our 9month dr appt her head measure 18.75" which is about 1/2" above the 100th percentile. the dr seemed a little concerned and wanted to see what she measured at her next appt in 3 months but felt her scalp and seemed to think that she was normal physiologically and developmentally. I'm afraid to consult Dr. Google but has anyone in the hive had experience with this? I feel like my husband and i have larger heads could it just be that she has a big head?
