I don't have any first hand experience but a friend of mine from college has 2 children effected by it. She has found a lot of support from this Facebook group - Coping With Laryngomalacia, Inc..

@Jellyfish: sorry to hear about his latch. My girl has latched well since birth despite the tie. She’s gaining weight well too. So despite the reflux, we have not clipped it.

This is a stretch but did anyone’s baby with LM have gross motor delays? My little lady’s head control is very poor at 3 months old. She hates tummy time and really only lifts her head up or pushes up when she is on my chest. She can kind of hold her head up when held upright. She basically only slept and ate for the first two months of life so maybe she just needs more time. I wonder if there is any association with LM?

@shabang: I definitely feel you on the anxiety. Her breathing is much less noisy in her sleep now at 3 months than it was when she was diagnosed thankfully but I’ll pop awake instantly when she makes any sound at night.

@magnolia: hi! We did end up clipping his tongue tie but not because of the laryngomalacia. I was having a horrible time breastfeeding due to his latch. That improved after getting it clipped but the laryngomalacia remained until it kind of just resolved on its own.

My daughter has this. It was multiple times a night that she would wake up sounding like she was gasping as a newborn then cry hysterically, but she never turned blue, and her ped assured me she would grow out of it. She's now 1 and it's mostly gone, although it definitely is more prominent if she's congested.

Apparently, she has a mild case, but I can tell you that I still haven't moved her out of our bedroom into her own like I did with the other babies much earlier. And, I still check that she's breathing all the time when she's asleep and have a ton of anxiety around it. Fun stuff.

@magnolia: Both my girls have had some kind of lip tie and tongue tie. I took my big girl to the ENT when she was still tiny and they told me not to do anything about it since she was gaining weight. I didn't even both doing anything about my second's girl's ties for this reason. Also, both of their teeth seem to be coming in normally despite the crazy upper lip time. No speech impediments so far with the first girl, either. ETA: when we saw the ENT, the first thing he asked me is if my girl could open her mouth. that made me realize that what I thought was a horrible tounge/lip tie really might just be mild, and so far it has been.

@Jellyfish: thanks again for responding to me, I have so many questions still... did you have your little ones tongue tie clipped? I had hers checked out aT 3 weeks before the laryngomalacia was diagnosed, but decided not to get it clipped, because she was latching and gaining well. Now I’m wondering if having it clipped would help the reflux

@agold: pediatrician put her on meds for reflux and got us an appointment to see the ent again for a 2nd scope. He wanting to rule out any kind of obstruction/growth since the previous scope

Both the ER staff and the ENT told me to go to the ER if she turns blue... I was like... duh. I’m so glad your little never got there. I am very hopeful this is also a benign case that will improve with time.

@magnolia: No, my girl did not have reflux issues. Please let me know what her doctor says. It is good to have the pediatrician on board. I recall them telling me that as long as she was gaining weight, then she was okay. And to go to the ER if she started turning blue. She never got to the point. Now, at 14 months, I hear the stridor often, but it doesn't seem to be an issue anymore beyond that. It still bothers me because I know what is causing the sound so I hold my breath until its over.

@Jellyfish: they must all be interrelated somehow, My little one has a tongue tie also

She hasn’t spit up in the past two days but I’ve been more vigilant about burping her really well and keeping her upright

It seems she mostly spits up when she coughs, so maybe it’s more of a gag reflex issue and not reflux

Going to the pediatrician tomorrow for two month check up. It’ll be my first chance to discuss the LM diagnosis

@magnolia: sorry didn’t get to reply earlier. Interesting, DS did have reflux too. This is terrible but I don’t exactly remember when it presented...I want to say maybe around 3 months? Between being a preemie, tongue tie, laryngomalacia, and reflux he was a terrible eater and it’s all a blur! He did get better later on but the first few months were tough.

@agold: Pulmonary decided it best to do a scope when he was around 7-8 months. We found out about the LM/TM/cleft and enlarged adenoids all at the same time. In March we had the adenoids removed and hoped we wouldn’t have to move forward with the cleft repair. Unfortunately he needs the cleft repair to stop aspiration of fluid.

@agold: thank you for sharing... I have been putting her on her belly. Half the time it helps and then she will usually fall asleep, and the other half of the time she gets mad she’s on her stomach! The breathing episodes don’t really seem to bother her, except sometimes she coughs after she eats and seems to pause in her breathing which of course scares the crap out of me. It’s tough in the middle of the night too because I’ll sit straight up in bed as soon as she starts to make any kind of noises. Thank you again for the resources, I feel a bit more calm today...

@Jellyfish: I’m glad your baby outgrew it! That gives me a lot of hope as well...I was induced a few weeks early And I suspect a lot of her respiratory issues are because she was a bit early. She’s definitely been a slow eater since birth. The strange thing is she usually starts making the sound when I lift her to my chest to burp her (as well as when I lay her down to sleep).

@magnolia: My second baby had this. It has turned out to be a mild case, but had to be watched for a little while. If her breathing got bad, I would turn her onto her stomach so that gravity could help get the flappy piece back where it should go. I was so scared, but realized that a lot of kids have much more severe cases. I was able to lay her flat to change her diaper without much of an issue. She is 13 months now and still has the breathing issues. I hear it multiple times a day, but it doesn't seem to bother her. It makes me pause and wait and watch, though. Please check out "flynnpluscrew" on instagram. She has two babies with LM and has been an amazing resource and truly a sweet girl to chat with.

@CatchAFallingStar: she’s five weeks old. I’m glad to hear your daughter grew out of it. At first we thought it was just noisy newborn breathing but it kept getting worse.

The pediatrician sent us to the ER Monday after I brought her In with concerns (she was loudly gasping for air) and then the ER had her evaluated by the ENT. The ent said she may grow out of it by 6-12 months. But if it gets worse she may need surgery.

This poor kid has been through enough already with a nicu stay at birth so I hope it doesn’t get worse.
