@Mrs. Taco: That's awesome! I am such a worrier sometimes that having plans for odd scenarios really helps me and that is a great plan in the event of an emergency. I how things go beautifully next week!

@Mrs. Taco: I think a trial run at the in-home for a week sounds like a great idea. I hope it goes smoothly and helps make the decision easier for you!

I just want to chime in that we are *very* happy with an in-home daycare and the less structured set up and how amendable our lady is to do things for us--and she remembers everything, too...and especially with your LO's allergies, I would think it will be easier to prevent a problem there.

Also--all the kids have their own cups at E's daycare. I just leave hers there, and she doesn't let them have cups all over the place since the daycare area is carpeted. So at *ours*, I wouldn't be concerned with cross contamination because of the way it's set up.

@Mrs. Taco: That is good! If she doesn't want to wash, maybe have each parent bring 2. One for milk and one for water. I know some do that in R's class. Then the parents leave the water one there all week and just take home the milk one each day.

@Smurfette: She's not technically enrolled at the daycare because I've been off for the summer. It won't be an issue if the inhome works for me to pull her--honestly, I feel like the center would be relieved, they'd never say it but I know R is a handful of liability. I

It terms of the sippys at the in home, great point about washing them after milk. I will definitely mention it!

@Cole: Yes about a plan! I am going to work one up for her but the positive thing is (can't believe I forgot to mention!) is that she lives across the street from the hospital!!!! And I work 7 mins up the road so if there was a severe reaction, R would go to the ER via ambulance and I would meet her there. I have an "action plan" on how to handle all reactions and will go over that in detail.

@.twist.: Hopefully one way or another it works out! Can't wait for her to reach the age that she KNOWS what not to eat, think that is a long way away though!

Oh man. This seems so tough and it doesn't seem like there is a clear winner here.

I like your thinking about trying the dayhome for a week and re-evaluating your options. IF that is an option the day care will allow. Otherwise, I would be inclined to start at the day care and see how it goes, otherwise you can always pull her out and put her in the dayhome.

Good luck! It would be so nerve racking to have such a serious allergy to consider. :(

ETA: I totally just saw your update, derp. Glad you figured out something that works. and I hope, one way or the other, that it does work incredibly smoothly and without incident!

I am glad you were able to make a decision that works for you right now! One thing I would encourage you to think about is coming up with a plan for what should happen if your lo has a reaction at the in home daycare. Personally, I think you're least likely to have an issue there but when it's only one adult it's good to know what her plan is on case of am emergency (she probably has a plan anyway). Knowing what to expect if there were an emergency would help me feel more at ease.

@Mrs. Taco: Does your day care require a 2 week notice or 30 day notice? I know our's does. Something to think about when budgeting, incase you have pay for both in order to move her.

Also, ask the inhome once lunch is over if she washes the sippy cups. If they put water in them, and there is still milk in it and LO takes it from another kid, which is going to happen, wouldn't want her to have a reaction.

@Adira: that's true. Okay, so I called the in home and told her that we would start her on Monday on a trial week. And called the daycare center and let them know to push back our start date to the 18th. Both had no problem.

I am such a planner and this whole situation is giving me anxiety! I mean, 9 AM isn'i too early to have a glass of wine right?

this is SO tough and I think you need to go with your gut. That said after reading everything, I would go with the in-home due to the fact you arent comfortable with the center's ability to monitor food. The fact that you mentioned her daughters would be around occassionaly to help is very good and the ratio would be a lot smaller with the in home if they are around.

@Mrs. Taco: 16 students to 3 teachers is just over 5 to 1 anyway, so it's only slightly better than the in-home daycare!

@lawbee11: unfortunately no, a nanny isn't an option. I'm a teacher so my salary would barely cover what a nanny would cost. Also, I would really like to have her around other children. I know that her allergies make this difficult.

They don't allow the kids to carry their sippy cups around at the center. However, they do have them for a long time during each of the four mealtimes when teachers are doing the distribution and cleanup of the food, which is when it worries me most. They all use the same sippy cup and the kids sit at built in tables with free standing chairs. To think that 16 one-year-olds are all going to sit in their chairs and not get up and run around is a silly thought. I'm sure it's pretty much organized chaos.

I agree about the in-home daycare, and also about the 6 to 1 ratio. One positive is though, that she has two daughters that are in part-time college and one that is a senior in high school. They live with her and she said that there's at least one around to help most times. I met the girls and they were all really sweet as well.

@Mrs. Taco: Yes, definitely call and ask! The fact that the kids are separated while they are eating and can only have their milk and food while separated is a HUGE bonus in my book! You wouldn't have to be constantly afraid of your child getting a hold of something she shouldn't!! <3

This is a tough decision. I'm not sure I'd be comfortable with either of these options. I assume a nanny isn't an option? It must be so scary to have a LO with such severe allergies!

The food on the ground at the center would definitely worry me. Do they allow the children to walk around with their sippy cups at the center? At ours they only get sippy cups with milk at designated meal/snack times.

I am generally not a fan of in-home care, and especially if it's not licensed. 6 kids for one caregiver seems like a lot. I honestly don't know what I would do!

While the center may have good intentions of closely monitoring your daughter while she eats, like you said, 16 kids and 3 teachers. That's just not always going to work out the way they say it will. Since her allergies seem to be pretty severe, I would go with the home daycare.

@Adira: i'm going to call and ask. I figure if I take it from the perspective of "I want to see how you do with r and if you think that it's hard for you to manage" she'll be okay. I'm going to be upfront about the fact that I've kept the spot at the daycare center in case it doesn't work out. Why couldn't I have found out about the in-home center weeks ago?! I could of put her in on a part-time basis to test it out and not had to deal with any of this. Oh well.

@swurlygurl: yes! I totally agree about the sippy cups. The way the in-home day care does sippy cups is at mealtime all kids sit in individual booster seats with trays. And they have their milk then they are not allowed to carry the sippy cups around after that so she puts them all away. This is a major selling point for me because R always wants what she can't have...

I was thinking about calling the day care center today and saying that we need to push back her start date a week. And then start are at the in-home on Monday. That way if the in-home doesn't work next week we'll still have our spot at the daycare center. What do you think?

This sounds absolutely terrifying :(

My concern with the in-home would be the WCM - L is always getting ahold of another kid's sippy cup and drinking from it. No big deal for us (except the other mom is a freak about germs), but that would be so dangerous for R! The in-home provider wouldn't be able to always watch her 100% - it only takes 2 seconds to grab a cup and put it to her mouth. Has she specifically addressed how something like that would be prevented?

That would really be my only concern - otherwise I would feel a lot safer at the in-home.

Oh, and if you start to not trust the in-home, would it be too difficult to get back to the center, or are you losing a difficult to get reserved spot?

@Mrs. Taco: The fact that the daycare has never dealt with severe allergic reactions makes me nervous. Like maybe they won't be as on guard as they should be because they just don't know any better. We've had some issues with our daycare and Xander getting things he shouldn't have, but thankfully nothing has triggered his anaphalyxis. We've been EXTREMELY lucky. I'm not sure I'd feel comfortable continuing to send him there if he ever had something that resulted in him needing his EpiPen. That by itself would make me lean towards the in-home center!

Plus, HOPEFULLY, she will grow out of her allergies and when she's older, you can send her back to a daycare center if that's what you decide you want to do. I don't think little kids really need THAT much structure, you know? Back in the day, the majority of moms were SAHMs and they probably didn't have nearly as much structure as daycares do, so I think an in-home would be just fine in that regards!

@Adira: @petunia354: the daycare has dealt with allergies before but never the severe. R went there this past school year and it was okay, but she did have a few reactions one of which almost resulted in an EpiPen (I was right around the corner and able to take her to the ER.) It's a very very serious allergy so it's so difficult that even if she has the EpiPen things could go wrong. I am unbelievably nervous about the fact that it is not licensed and would never even consider such a thing if it wasn't for the circumstances. I love the daycare environment of a center and that's what I would truly go with but I feel like I need to put the allergies first since they are life-threatening.

This is such a hard decision, and I totally feel you on the allergy fears - Xander is the same way - anaphalyxic with milk. It's soooooooo scary having him in daycare, but he's still in the infant room and I know they keep him separated from the other children while eating and are good about cleaning up any food because of his allergies. I'm scared of when he has to move to the toddler room...

Is it possible to talk to the daycare about how they've handled severe allergies in the past? Do you have an epipen that they can keep on hand in case she does ingest anything she's not supposed to?

I'm partial to licensed daycares, but that's all I'm familiar with, so it's hard for me to say. The cost of the in-home care coupled with the great reviewed from cop families and knowing that she will more likely to be MUCH safer from accidental food exposure makes me lean towards that in-home, but I don't really know! I've never even looked at an in-home place before, so in general, they make me nervous just because I don't know much about them. :(
