That is a tough one. I feel like even though it will be inconvenient and stressful, you should seriously consider going if you don't want your career to suffer. It's nice that they're sort of giving you the option though, a lot of jobs wouldn't. At least you have your husband and MIL to help out while you're gone, a lot of women don't have that support system!

Personally I wouldn't go. I had to leave my LO at 6 months and I HATED it.

Or....I will end up going because they really pushed for me to go once I said I didn't think I could, even offered to let me bring the baby with and my one coworker's mom would watch her. So guess I'll be figuring things out, hopefully MIL will come help DH.

Thanks ladies. My job rarely requires travel so I hadn't really discussed it in depth, my manager had asked me before Christmas if I would even consider traveling at this point and I said I'd consider it especially if it was a shorter trip, but it could be difficult to work out logistics since I'm nursing, and she seemed totally understanding of that. Based on that and the fact that DH can't change his work conflicts (court dates) I have said I will attend remotely. I think I'll be able to get the same level of training that I would in person and I won't have to figure out how to get over 120 oz of breastmilk home at the end of 4 days or force everyone else to take breaks from the meeting so I can pump.

If you can attend remotely, I'd do that, honestly. I think it's rude of them to ask you to go last minute, baby or no. If you want to go, though, you should be able to work out pumping logistics. Your husband can sleep next to the baby, and he'll likely find that he wakes up when it's his job. That was the case for my husband.

If you have a freezer stash I would go. There will probably be somewhere for you to pump wherever you are at, and just make sure your hotel has a freezer you can use if you will be bringing the milk back. For at home maybe someone can stay with DH or he could sleep next to the baby? I'd be afraid of mommy-tracking yourself by not being accomondating.

@mamabolt: did you discuss anything with your boss when you came back from maternity leave about travel? I told my boss I couldn't work for a year after I came back - essentially giving myself enough time to stop pumping at work before going back to traveling (if needed). Honestly, I am trying to mommy-track my life at this current job because I don't need to travel to move up so, I may eventually say no more travel.

I would discuss it with your boss when she gets back and see if you can come to an agreement. Let her know what you told us if you're comfortable with that. If not, just tell her you're not comfortable traveling yet or you're not comfortable traveling last minute like this. Maybe if she wants you to go on another trip, that is planned out, you can have your husband's parents come into town while you're gone to help hear the baby?

One of my coworkers daddy-tracked himself, and I don't think it was a good thing. Others had to pick up his slack and yes we are resentful and our manager stopped nominating him for things.

If you have a capable partner and support system, I say go.

I wouldn't go. Not just because of that but because of the past minute. Even if I was single I have other things in my life I can't rearrange on a dime.

I totally understand the "mommy-track" but while you're still pumping it's different, and it sounds like your manager understands. If you can attend remotely I'd discuss that with your manager and ask her if she thinks it would hurt your career in any way, if you have that kind of relationship with her. If not, honestly, I'd just say thanks but no thanks. Your supply could be really affected by a trip like that. I do like the idea of overnighting the milk though! I wouldn't have thought of that!!

I don't think I'd feel comfortable doing it so last minute. Would they make accommodations for you, like pay for you to overnight what you pump, since they didn't give you notice to build up a stash? I guess it depends on how important the training thing is too, but it sounds like they realize that this is last minute and could be impossible. Even without LOs, it's tough to take an almost week long trip with no notice.

BUT, I can't really imagine a situation in my current job that it would be so important that I go at the last minute. Your job might be different.

So got into work this morning to find out I am being asked to travel Mon-Thurs next week. I am freaking out about it - LO will be 7 months the day the trip starts, I am still pumping 3x a day, and with only a week's notice DH already has some work conflicts scheduled he can't rearrange. DH also unfortunately doesn't hear LO when she cries at night. It's not his fault, and he's always happy to get up when I ask him to, but he's a heavy sleeper and he can't change that.

I haven't committed to it one way or the other yet. I don't want to go given the pumping and sleep logistics, but I don't want to mommy-track myself either. I have not talked to my manager about it, just picked up a voicemail about it, and she's out today so I can't discuss. She did say they understood if I couldn't make it, and I would be able to attend remotely (it's a training session type thing). What would you do?
