Awesome, thanks guys!
Haha @MrBee, what if it was Brady Brady?! Too cruel...
I loved learning that it is a southern tradition @TheHistoryofUs, especially because my grandmother is from Georgia!
This makes me feel better about it as a viable option :)

I definitely think it depends on the name. I, for one, love last names as first names - Harrison, Keaton, Brady, etc... I really wanted Keaton for our LO but Hubs vetoed it.

@mediagirl: Our DS is Evan...his great-grandmother's maiden name was Evans, and both his grandfather and father (my FIL and DH) have it as a middle name.

But that's a lot easier because Evan is a totally accepted first name. Again, I think if you love it and it's not outrageously long/hard to spell, go for it!

@MamaMoose: Pretty sure that Miranda kept her last name, although I'm not positive! If so though, then it would be:

Miranda Hobbes
Steve Brady
Brady Hobbes

Otherwise you're right, it'd be confusing!

Miranda Brady
Steve Brady
Brady Hobbes

Actually that wouldn't make sense, because I don't think many moms would take a new last name and give the baby their maiden name. But can't say for sure either way!

Depends on the last name I suppose. My maiden name would make for an extremely strange first name! Same if I used my mother's maiden name. It could also be factor on the origin of the name. I have a Asian last name so that's probably why it wouldn't work as well.

@mrbee: hahaha I just had to do a double take when I saw that you wrote this and not MRS Bee. Once Miranda and Steve got married I always wondered about their names. Did Miranda become Miranda Brady and now the kid's first name is the same as both his parents last name?? I think it would become very confusing!! But then again I'm obviously a weirdo since I worry about these things when the characters aren't real!!

I know someone who's done it. My current name, not maiden name is a boys name so that could easily work. I personally wouldn't do it because in Jewish tradition we name after deceased relatives so it's jut not in my tradition...... but if you like the name you should use it!

That is a great idea, especially since surnames are so popular as first names. As someone whose mother's maiden name is my middle name, I think it tends to get lost in the middle, so putting it first is awesome.

I REALLY want to use my mom's maiden name as a first name if we have a boy some day. My husband wasn't in to it. Luckily we had a girl this time around so I still have a chance to talk him into it! I think it's an awesome idea as long as its not some crazy name with like 27 letters that no one can spell or say!

DH and I are having quite the time with possible names! Girl names aren't so much an issue, it's boy names that are giving us trouble.

If he had his way, we would name a DS after his grandfather, a name I do not care for. I feel really bad about it, too, and have tried to like it because it's sentimental to him. No luck :(

So here's the thing: he suggested using my mother's maiden name (a surname that will not carry on, as my grandfather had two girls) as a first name, and the child could go by the nickname my grandfather had throughout his youth and career in the military. My grandmother even calls him by it. SO sweet, right?! But...is it strange to have a last name for a first name? Especially if it's not something as simple as "Smith" or "Cole"?
