@lovehoneybee: your post has me bawling here. I hope that when the day comes I'll be able to have a good last time (well, minus the sickness).

This thread is making me feel really emotional and sad about the inevitable day we'll stop nursing.

@edelweiss: yes just a little to relieve pressure (I was worried about a clogged duct too since it got a little hard, so I tried to massage that with a warm cloth). I didn't pump at all and I think it would just drag out the process. it was uncomfortable for maybe 5 days. you can also take sudafed which will help dry you up.
and definitely on the haywire hormones!! it absolutely puts them all out of whack for a little while.

@lovehoneybee: aw, thanks for the hugs and for sharing your story. like @cheert16:, i'm tearing up! that is very sweet. i tried to be more present during our nursing sessions lately for the reasons that you mentioned, but i may have been trying to trim his nails during the last session!

@bhbee: thanks for your supportive words, i really appreciate it! i am thankful for the breastfeeding journey, and know in the grand scheme of things it's not something to be sad about...makes me wonder if my hormones might be going a little haywire. so did you just hand express enough for the pressure to be relieved? did you do any pumping after the last nursing session? thanks in advance!

I think only a few people get a perfect ending, so take some comfort that emotions around it are ok no matter how it goes. And you did an awesome job to make it this far!

LO weaned at 18 months. She had definitely been losing interest, we only did a morning session, and I knew I was kind of over it.

So I nursed her the last time knowing it might be the last time, but I would have let her continue if she wanted. I can't say it was pure magic or anything, especially with her being older and distracted.

We were at my mom's and she only wanted to see the cat the next day so that was that. We were both ready. I did feel sad and even coming off once per day I had some uncomfortable days for a while and had to hand express a bit (I've always had plenty of milk). It's just a hard baby thing to give up, so give yourself permission to feel whatever you need to for a while.

Oh, big hugs.

I didn't plan to wean when I did, but we were down to one session a day (occasionally two), and I sort of assumed it was coming sooner rather than later so I tried to be as present as possible.

The last real session we had was the first night that he was really sick, and one of the first times I felt completely helpless as a mama. I had been curled up with him on the futon in his room. When he finished nursing he snuggled in closer, pulled my arm over his chest, and when I shifted back so he could have a little bit of room he put his arm around my neck and pulled me back closer, then fell asleep. I stayed with him and let him sleep there, with my hand over his heart, for hours, even though I couldn't fall asleep.

Unfortunately, he got sicker, and was so congested that he couldn't latch on and breathe through his nose. By the time he was feeling better my already dwindling supply was gone, and I hadn't been pumping.

Looking back, I'm really happy with the last session (except that he was sick, of course). It was one of those times when I felt completely at peace.

But I miss it sometimes. I hadn't planned on it yet, but I'm glad I didn't have to force it.

if you weaned, did you know ahead of time which was going to be your last nursing session? how did you feel about that last nursing session?

if you didn't know at the time that your last nursing session was indeed the last, how did you feel looking back at it?

i don't have any point to these questions, just that i'm in the process of weaning (LO is 12 months) and going through some bittersweet emotions and just want to connect with others. i was planning on keeping the morning and bedtime nursing sessions until whenever, but i got mastitis and stopped nursing LO because i didn't want him to get side effects from the antibiotics (i know some people nurse through it, i was just worried about LO getting diarrhea), and after the antibiotics are over i don't think i'll go back to breastfeeding because while i like nursing, it just seems time. he's still getting some breastmilk from my freezer stash in bottles/straw cups, but i think that's it for nursing! sigh, i'm having mixed emotions.
