You know, I read TONS on breastfeeding, and I knew and expected it to be hard, but I never knew that it's *normal* to have that intense but brief pain at the beginning!

Agree with the others - it sounds normal! It wasn't until around 7 weeks that that pain really started to diminish for me. Using lanolin and/or APNO also helps. Good luck to you! <3

@Mae: I would highly suggest getting a script for APNO. It will heal your existing damage quickly before it gets worse. Also try a warm salt water soak for 2-3 minutes after Bf when you can. It really helped mine to heal. If you're large breasted, try to sandwich hour breast so that LO can get more of the areola.

Totally normal! For me, with DD1, it wasn't until about 6 weeks in before that toe curling, tears in the eyes pain went away. All totally normal though so hopefully you're coming to the end of it soon.

On the plus side, with DD2, the pain was gone by about two or three weeks :-)

I never had scabs, but I did have the same experience where the first ten seconds or so literally taught me the meaning of "toe curling pain". Took a few weeks to get past that stage. And I totally thought I was doing something wrong but then it would be fine.

We did a lot of damage when dd was a nb and it took until 9 weeks for nursing to be pain-free for me, as my nipples took a long time to heal. I think it's probably normal, but it never hurts to work on getting a deeper latch. There are some really good youtube videos that it found really helpful - if you search on youtube you should find some. Good luck :)

Are you large breasted? Try to pull the baby into your breast more. I know I am and this helped. Also letting your milk air dry on your nips is incredible! I had one breast worse than the other and I pumped on that side and offered the other breast instead. Good luck!

@Mae: I'm glad to hear it's normal too! I'm only on day 2 and this latch pain already has me wanting to run to rent a pump instead.

sounds like my experience. This might not be entirely helpful, but my nipples took about five weeks to heal. I alternated positions some to help the pain (ie, cross cradle and football).

Same problem here, but from what I've been reading that seems to be the norm. I think my initial pain has lessened a bit lately... Perhaps five seconds? I'm just trusting that it will get better!

It's normal! It used to worry me because everyone says that it's not supposed to hurt & if it does you're doing it wrong but that sounds completely normal to me & the pain will lessen & eventually go away. At 8.5 months, I have no pain when I used to have to hold my breath & bear down when she would latch as a newborn.

I've had that experience with both of my children in the beginning and it got better with both. My LO is 5 weeks and I healed pretty quickly. I used coconut oil and Earth Mama Angel Baby nipple butter. After using these products I don't think I will ever use lanolin again. Maybe worth a try for you. Hope it gets better soon!

I had pain with the latch for a couple months. Even now a 8 months if he has a lazy latch at one feeding I will notice some latching discomfort for a couple days after. Definitely bring it up to your LC so she can hopefully help you trouble shoot.

I am right there with you with the initial pain if it counts for anything, my whole body is like "eeeeek" in pain, then it eases off as he gets going. I try to make sure I don't get lazy ensuring we move forward getting a good latch, and I know with #1 it did pass, but the pain until then? Yikes!!

So my LO had a really shallow latch at first and did a bit of damage to my nipples that has yet to heal despite lanolin and gel pads. Her latch has seriously improved in the last week and I think that once she gets going it is really good.

The problem is, when she initially latches it hurts REALLY BAD. I do a cross-cradle hold and do the U-thing with my boob and it seems like she gets a nice large mouthful. But every single time the first 10 seconds hurt really bad then all of a sudden it doesn't hurt anymore and the rest of the nursing session is fine.

I'm not sure if this is just normal/how it is? Or if there is anything I can do to help her not hurt me so bad at first.

Also I do think she is still doing some damage because I'm still getting new small scabs... but her latch seems really good over all and when she pulls off I'm not flattened out or anything, so I don't know if it is just her cluster feeding and so much time on the boob that some damage is inevitable? Or the first 10 seconds she does something different that hurts/damages? Or what...

I do plan to see a LC this coming week... but she is on vacation until the end of the week so I was hoping for a little insight to get me through the next several days with hopefully a little less pain.

Thanks :)
