what time does your LO wake up in the morning? That usually is the determinant of when their bedtime is. calculate how many hours he sleeps at night and then work from there. So if he sleeps 11 hours and you want his bedtime to be 8, then you have to wake him at 7.

@lolabee: when my ds was younger and had a late bedtime, we had to move it up sloooowwwly by 15 min increments until he reached 730.

he's 8 months now and sleeps at 7pm. we started bath around 630 latest usually. sometimes later and he's flexible by 30 min too.

you will there!!

@Mrs. High Heels: I think you're right with moving it up slowly. I totally failed at having at set bedtime! It's always between 9-10:30 which I think is bad. Anyways, thank you! I will make it a catnap and work towards getting him to an 8:30 bedtime. Think it's do able within a week or two?

@lolabee: :( i think since his bedtime is pretty late now at around 10:30... it'll be better to push it earlier in slower increments anyway. 8:30 sounds like a good time to shoot for tonight. if i were you, i'd make this a catnap and limit it to 30 minutes.

@Mrs. High Heels: just tried to extend past 2 hours and it was a FAIL!!! Meltdown central. So I guess he will nap now - aiming for an 8:30 bedtime. Fingers crossed!

@Weagle: @Mrs. High Heels: great suggestions! I think the 3 hour before bedtime rule would work for us at this stage. I guess I just need to work on my keeping him up in the vehicle skills and/or not have him out as late. I feel like the biggest thing is if he is ready to sleep for say 8-8:30 he won't stay asleep. Maybe that's my fault though...because of co-bedding?! I'm usually in bed by midnight or so.

@lolabee: what time is his last nap? that always affects bedtime for us. i try to avoid any naps 3 hours before i want his bedtime to be. DS is 5.5 months right now, so in order to make a 7:30 pm bedtime i try not to let him sleep past 4:30 pm. 5 pm MAX.

We found that waking her up at a certain time really helped in establishing a bedtime. Maybe make sure he's awake for the day at least 12 hours before you would want him to go to bed. You could also set a last nap time limit. LO needs at least 4 hours awake before bed and has since about 8 months. We don't let her sleep past 4 unless we know we're going to be out past her bedtime.

Curious if anyone else has struggled with an LO that still has a late bedtime at almost 6 months of age? His awake time is 2-2.5 hours max. but depending on how long his naps are kind of dictates his 'bedtime' these days. We have a bedtime routine (although a bath is every other night) but as of about 4 months it depends on last nap on what time it starts.

I would love for him to be in bed by 8:30-9, right now it's more like 10-10:30 which is way too late, for multiple reasons! Not good for him, not good for us! I'm thinking a lot of it has to do with structure, during the summer there hasn't been a ton - either away on a couple of trips or to sis' cabin. So we're not always in our own bed.

Should I start with waking him at the same time everyday?

Any input would be appreciated Bees! Oh, if it helps - we co-bed & EBF.
