@NurseDMB: c was also a late pointer, but our ped said it was more about "inviting you in to her world"- through gesturing, offering to share, that kind of thing. I just thought maybe I don't point very much! I wouldn't call her an early talker but she seems to have more words than some of her friends, at 16 months. She is picking new words up every day now, thought lot of times she says it one day, then stops the next. Her most recent word, no joke: booger.

Like @hilsy85, my LO was also a later than normal pointer (can't remember exactly when), but he's a very verbal 2 year old - carries full conversations with us at 26 months. I don't think it was at all related for him.

@Grace: yeah I've heard that receptive language is most important around this age, which he has had very good receptive language this whole time, so I'm not that concerned.

@hilsy85: good to know, thanks! I'm hoping that all of this pointing and naming things means he's going to have his vocab explosion soon. :-)

LO didn't start index pointing until later than the norm, but my pedi said it didn't really matter, since the whole point is that they gesture to show you something, whether it's with the whole hand or the finger. My LO was an early talker if anything and is extremely verbal now at 2 yrs (full 8-10 word sentences).

It's GREAT if he's interested in learning the names of various things! That's how the language explosion started for us :)

My LO just started index pointing at 15 months and only has 2-3 words (incl mama and dada). Maybe it is connected. But like you, receptive language is high, so I'm not worried.

I wasn't worried about it before because his receptive language and understanding has always been advanced - but then one of DH's (annoying) friends asked if we have had his hearing tested since he only says 10 words - I thought that was within normal range for this age? (And I know his hearing is fine, he responds to his name every single time and could hear a pin dropping on the floor!)

Anyone know if late pointing means late speech?

DS didn't start index finger pointing until 15 months, he's 16 months now. Prior to that, he gestured with his whole hand toward things.

He says about 10ish words - even though he understands hundreds of words, he doesnt say a whole lot.

Just curious if anyone else had late pointers and if it always means late speech.

Also, he's been pointing at everythinggg the last few weeks and wants me to name everything in the house. So I'm wondering if these means he might have a vocab explosion soon - I hope so!
