@oceanis723: Woah! He just said that out of the blue? I can't even imagine my son just blurting out words like that! That would be AWESOME!

@andrea: Thanks for your positive words! I've been worried sick about his speech delay (and I"m talking sleepless nights on the internet convinced that he's on the autism spectrum). I hope his therapy goes well too! :)

My son is a late talker, but he is catching up. It just took him awhile. I found out he was just choosing not to when he was about 2 and a half. DH was away for work and he came up and said "mommy where's daddy?". I was shocked and a little irritated because I was so worried. It was just his choice not to talk much. Go figure.

@banana: I know, we can get anxious about certain things when we see other kids doing them before ours. But I know a lot of boys who say about 8 words, too! Don't worry too much and I hope the speech therapy goes well!

@maysprout: Aw how cute that you used to shake your head no. haha! If I ask my son to say something, he gets super frustrated. It's almost like he knows the word but doesn't WANT to talk. I hope the late talking = phd thing is a trend! :)

Apparently I didn't say any words until 2 and then was shy to talk so didn't really start saying much until I was 3. My mom said she would ask me to repeat a word and I'd just shake my head no. I've got my PhD now too (though not from an Ivy league school) so maybe there's a trend ;)

@mrs.wagon: I won't even TRY to compare to Wagon Jr. or Charlie because I would just be sad. lol. At this point, I'm just trying to have him say one new word a week! Wagon Jr. says lots of words so I wouldn't be worried. My son says 8 words!!!

My friend's son turned 2 a few weeks ago and doesn't have very many words. The pediatrician did not suggest any sort of speech therapy.

DD goes to daycare with a lot of boys and none of them seem to talk very much. I don't think there are 2 languages being spoken in any of these households. I think boys just do talk later!

I always compared Wagon Jr. with Charlie since they're exactly the same age. Wagon Jr. is seriously behind Charlie in speech but I don't stress about it anymore because it seems like they all even out by elementary school... and if it's still a problem then, then we can think about speech therapy. But I think starting it now (especially since he'll be bilingual) is a great idea!

@jojogirl: Wowzers! Man oh man. If only my son would get a phd from an ivy league school! haha. And he didn't talk til 3? I feel encouraged! :) And I hear ya on the bilingual thing. We speak 2 languages at home and sometimes I worry that it's confusing him. For a while, my DH and I contemplated just switching to one language only. But according to the speech therapist, she said we should continue with 2 languages so that he can get exposed to both early on. I hope you're right in that it's just taking my son a little longer to process both languages!

My brother didn't say a word until 3. They recommended he go into a special needs school and my parents said no and put him into regular pre-K with no speech therapy. He finished his PhD from an Ivy League school last month so... suffice to say it worked out fine.

ETA: One theory my mom has is that our housekeeper was trying to teach him spanish around that age - there are some stories about kids who get raised bi-lingual talking later.. but then speaking 2 languages. Something about it taking longer to process. Don't know if that's the case here, but thought I'd mention it :)

@mrsdaredevil: That's really encouraging to hear! We just started my son in daycare 2 weeks ago (for the very reason you specified....socialization!) so I'm hoping hoping hoping that it'll help him with his speech! Thanks for your positive story!

My MIL runs an in home daycare. She got this boy, C, who started at 28 months and did not say one single word. She could communicate with him fine (he would understand her) but he just wouldn't talk. However, within three weeks of C being at the daycare and around other children (he was an only child), he started talking in complete sentences! He automatically starting spitting out dozens and dozens of word and stringing them together. It was crazy! I guess his doctors said that being around other children and socializing can really help the speech of some toddlers.

@mrs.bee: So glad to hear that! I was soooo worried for weeks about his speech delay (still am actually but not as much). It's hard to compare to other kids who are fabulous talkers (like Charlie!) and feel a little worried. He understands everything we say and does take direction well so I'm not concerned about his cognitive skills. It's his expressive language skills that have me concerned. I hope he ends up catching up like all of the other kids you mentioned!

@Alivoo01: Wow....5th grade? Interesting! My son does well with puzzles too! And he knows all of his letters and most of his alphabet. He points to them when I ask him to but won't say them! I hope my son is just "not ready to talk yet" like your husband's nephew!

My brother was a late talker and didn't start talking till he was in the second grade. The hubby's nephew didn't start talking until he was just shy of turning 5! However, both of them understood everything when spoken to and took directions well. Hubby's nephew is also a brilliant kid in that he was able to complete puzzles (like the states of the U.S.) by the time he was 3 and was putting together tiny lego piece structures by the time he was 4! Hubby's nephew took speech therapy, but it didn't really seem to impact him. He just wasn't ready to talk yet.

there are a lot of late talkers around us, and only one of them pursued speech therapy. one is a girl and the rest are boys. in the long run, everyone was just a late talker (well most are around charlie's age with a couple older kids). the one that pursued speech therapy didn't really start talking until he was closer to 3, but i believe he talks just fine now.

it's a good thing you're pursuing speech therapy. i think it will probably end up that he is a late talker, but early intervention can have such an impact.

good luck!

My son is 2 years old and he only says a handful of words! We're getting him speech therapy, which starts next week and we're so excited to have him start! His speech delay has been worrying me and I just HOPE that the therapy will help him develop his language skills.

I've heard a lot of stories where toddlers (especially boys) didn't talk until 2 1/2 and then would have a crazy word explosion. But I didn't want to take that chance and decided that speech therapy would be the way to go.

Anybody have a late talking toddler or know anyone who does? Would love to hear some positive success stories!
