@BabyPenguinXO: I honestly don't remember??? There were so many doctors and nurses... I assume they watched him while he breastfed. They only allowed me to breastfeed 10 minutes each time followed by a bottle of pumped milk so that he wouldn't burn so many calories. That doesn't necessarily answer your question, but I just can't remember how they determined he was doing that correctly :bummed:

DD was born at 36 weeks and no NICU. Pretty crazy really considering she was born a month early and on the side of the road. She was tiny...only 5 lbs 15 oz by time we left hospital and 18" but looked great and healthy.

@Mrs. Lion: my hospital doesn't have a mandatory NICU stay. My 34 weeker spent 22 days feeding growing. We are hoping to get to 36 this time and praying we pass the NICU. I have some NICU nurse friends who said girls tend to do better so there is high hope!

I hope you skip the NICU! Please do update when you deliver! I have been wondering this and it seems the answers are all over the board the places I have asked! It's so hard to want to know what to expect for sure!

Ours went to the NICU, but it was not automatic. In my hospital at the time any baby born before term (37 weeks--early term, not full term) has a NICU team at delivery to especially assess them, but is only admitted if needed.

I was 33w6d and our hospital's policy was any baby under 34 weeks went automatically. He was only there for 6 days.

Lo was 35w+2, and was taken straight to the nicu, where he stayed for 2 weeks, mainly to gain weight. He was 3 lbs 12 oz, and about 4 lbs 3 oz when they finally let us bring him home.

My son was 34+6 also. 5lbs 1oz. They said he did not have to go to the NICU because he was over 5lbs and the NICU team that was there when I delivered cleared him. We stayed in the hospital three nights because he was jaundice.

We were late term 35+6 weeks. L was taken straight to NICU and was there for ... 4 days in total. We had some worries about infection since we weren't sure when my water broke. Also about Group B Strep since I never got a chance to have testing done. Lastly, he had a bit of jaundice.

If your child was born between 34-36 weeks, were they automatically taken to the NICU? If so, how long were they there?

My first was born at 34+6 and was automatically taken to the NICU. We passed that milestone yesterday with baby 2 and I seem to remember them telling me that if we had made it to 35 weeks the NICU would have only been as needed. Curious about other experiences.
