@macintosh: Thank you!!!! I really like the daycare in general, but they are fairly strict about their routines. Pretty much everything that I like a bit less falls under the heading of too rigid routine!

@periwinklebee: that’s awful, how could you do that to a toddler!? My LOs teachers always offered extra crackers or SOMETHING when the kids asked. Now in preschool they will ask my kid every morning if he wants breakfast before they put it away, since we come in on the later side. I hope your day gets better!

@Pollywog: I was super annoyed because we barely missed it - like there was one kid still eating and my LO went over to the table to join, and they said while looking pointedly at me "snack is all done, go play with the blocks." I understand you can't vary your routine a ton based on idiosyncratic drop offs, but we are never normally late :meh: LO still takes one bottle of milk in the afternoon and I gave him that, so now I'm worried he's going to be upset without that later, ugh...

@macintosh: I find the subway super annoying with kids. But my husband has a pretty strong preference to live in the city, so I'm not sure we'll be avoiding it any time soon I hope your Monday is looking up now.... ugh I would have been so frustrated too....

That's really rude, I would not go back.

I get if someone's chronically late and also chronically disturbing others while being late, but first time, or once in a while, or as long as you can make as little disturbance as possible? I mean, the whole point is for people to be able to exercise??

I’ve been reading all these responses and thinking about it. I understand for some yoga studios having a strict time, fine. But not someplace that should also be family friendly, which by definition, anyplace that has childcare should be! So like if it was a class at a fancy elite yoga studio (so not my thing!) I would get it. But a class at the gym with childcare, it seems ridiculous.

You guys are so awesome, I feel so much better! But also it sucks that it happens to so many of us, ugh!

@gotkimchi, @autumnleaves, @Becky: Thanks! I think I will email them about it since it makes me doubt buying another package of classes in the future.

@erinbaderin: one of the reasons they have that rule is because the pilates room is connected to the yoga room and both classes start at the same time - which is totally stupid if you ask me! If you don't have a room with a separate entrance you need to stagger the classes.

@pachamama: oh my god I would be devastated! I'm sorry that happened to you. I hate when something I planned well in advance falls apart like that.

@YogiRunner: Yes yes yes! I've been to many different classes at different gyms and studios and I've neeeever been locked out. They told me that was the policy for all classes at this gym - really?

@nwm: Good point! I used to have this one yoga teacher who I absolutely hated. She would give me a hard time for drinking water during the class, not to mention if I got called out of class because my kid needed to use the potty (there was not bathroom in that child care). I just stopped going to her classes after too much of her nonsense, lol!

@muffinsmuffins: Right, that's why I went even though I knew I would be late, because it was too late to cancel anyway.

@Nutella: That is so awful and rude! It makes me really sad - fitness should be inclusive and welcoming. You are so right, I'm sure that's why they couldn't stay open.

@periwinklebee: Oh no, I'm so sorry! I can't imagine how hard it must be with a toddler on the subway. You're amazing for making it there at all, I would've been tempted to go home and call off sick

I would be annoyed too... Not the same thing per se, but I was nearly an hour late to daycare drop off / work today due to a subway meltdown that had me stuck on an insanely crowded train with a tantruming toddler in one arm and a folded stroller in the other for nearly an hour. Daycare I think was a bit annoyed about the late show and my son didn't get morning snack when we showed up because he missed it. I was literally nearly in tears worried he'll be hungry but I couldn't go grab something extra to feed him because I was already super late to work.

@YogiRunner: I know. I actually talked to the owner of the studio. She asked why her prenatal students never came back. I said point blank: "you don't do mommy and me classes and you have a zero tolerance late policy. I can't risk losing $25 a class if I'm 2 minutes late because the baby is still nursing or my toddler needs a hug after getting a boo boo". It still makes me ragey that they went out of business, because it could've been such a great business model if there was a little flexibility

@Pollywog: WTF! I literally cannot imagine turning away a pregnant woman from class.

I am getting so ragey about these responses! I just checked one of my local studio's late policy and they also lock the door after 5 minutes as to not "disturb others' practice". As a teacher and a practicing yogi, I think that's a little ridiculous (it's not something we'd ever do at the studio I teach at). Is it really that disturbing for someone to quietly put their mat down? Enough that you get turned away from an important part of your week when life happens? Ugh.

The same thing happened to me during my last prenatal yoga class. It hit horrific traffic and was 10 seconds late. I literally cried because I was in so much pain being 38+5. It's actually why I didn't go back to the studio after the kids were born. I couldn't guarantee life wouldn't happen.

@macintosh: I feel your pain! A very similar thing happened to me with a Sunday morning pilates class that I booked - and when I showed up five mins late (because two kids and life), they showed me away gesturing to their watch rudely as if I should know better. It was really annoying and I never went back. Their weekday classes do not suit anyone who has to do daycare pick up or a school run, so it really annoys me :meh:

Super frustrating. It’s not like you waltz in and ask them to start the class over! Like others, I would rather them allow you to sneak in and jump in where the class is rather than locking you out. If you didn’t cancel in the 24 hrs, then I agree you’d need to pay for it, but they should let you in even if it was half over or something. If there’s traffic or an accident, anyone could theoretically be late!

Total solidarity. I am late every time I go to a gym class and I get crap for it every time and I just keep going because whatever. Also I rejoined the gym and the young trainer responded to my telling him I have literally two one hour windows all week that could conceivably work by being like, we usually recommend at least three gym visits per week to accomplish your goals. I just blinked at him. I try not to let it bug me because I just remember what a self involved idiot I was before I had kids. But it does bug me. But I’m sure as hell not letting it stop me from getting my workout time in during those two windows that do work!!

@macintosh: ugh, that’s bullshit if you ask me. I get it if they need to charge for no-shows because a class always has a waiting list, but locking the door like that makes no sense. As a yoga teacher, I’d rather someone show up late than not at all, and would welcome them to quietly take a spot. It takes a lot for people to get out of their houses and come to classes, especially those with young kids who work, and stuff happens that could make you late once in awhile. This isn’t a busy doctors office. It’s a gym. Let people in who’ve signed up! I don’t think an email showing your disappointment and asking more about the locked door policy is out of line... they should hear it.

@macintosh: ackkkk. I know the feeling exactly!! Twice now I literally had my stepmom drive down 45 minutes to watch my kids so I could go to Spin class. They use stupid paper number tags to sign up and they were all gone at 9:06 for the 9:30 class. I was almost in tears.

Did you still have to pay for it? I can see why, if it’s in high demand, they’d give your spot away if you were late. But if there’s a 24 hour cancellation policy and you were still charged you should have been able to go in.

I have absolutely mentioned having classes at times that better fit working parents schedules. The places around here all have like 3-4 middle of the day classes but the first class is usually not until 6:30am which is really too late. They haven’t offered other classes but it felt good to basically just say hey, you’re shutting out working moms.

Ugh - I am sorry this happened! It is so hard to find time to take care of ourselves and then things like this happen. You may want to email them and let the know how hard it is to get to class and find that self care time and how you love the class. Maybe hearing it they will be be kinder when it happens again (to you or someone else).

I’ve been going to a Sunday Pilates class at my gym for a few weeks now. It’s limited space and an extra fee, so they have a pretty strict 24 hour cancellation policy. Today I was 10 minutes late for the first time - woke up late, kid wasn’t cooperating, it randomly snowed and i had to scrape my car - and I was locked out.

At first i was pissed! Then just a combination of frustrated, disappointed, and embarrassed. I had dropped my kid off for babysitting but i hadn’t brought sneakers so I just hung out and took a shower.

The thing that bothered me the most was the desk clerk suggest a different class might work better for me in the future. No lady, you don’t get it! I work full time, i can’t come at 9:30 on a Wednesday. My son is in daycare all day, I can’t come at 6:30 on a Monday during dinner time. Saturday he’s in a basketball program in the morning so Sunday is the only day!

I feel like nobody but a mom of young children could understand. You try to do something to take care of yourself and there’s always a barrier :bummed:
