Update: Last night we started feeding at 7, he took the bottle faster than I anticipated (always hit or miss!) and put down around 7:25, asleep by 7:45. Slept until 6 AM. Im hoping this is a habit and that a later bedtime helps him continue this!! The night before we did the same thing, fed at 7, down at 730, asleep by 8 and he slept until 5 AM. We did a mini feed, and he woke for the day at 7.

My LO does better with a later bedtime. It started out, early on, that I could not get him down at a reasonable time. Before 6 weeks or so, bedtime was between midnight and 2 am. By 10 weeks, I was down to a more reasonable 11 pm bedtime. At 4.5 months I was down to about 9:30, and at 8 months bedtime is between 8:45 and 9. Lately he STTN about 10 hours. Earlier bedtimes just lead to earlier wake-ups, and not more sleep. I basically move his bedtime earlier when he starts to sleep later.

@birdofafeather: that's basically what DS does now. Bed around 7-730, MOTN feed between 2-4, then awake for the day around 7 am. My confusion is from the few times that he went down at 8:30 PM (mostly because he was fussing for an hour, despite our best efforts to help him fall asleep) he then will sleep so much longer than our regular routine. The first time, he slept 830-430. The last time, last night, 830-630. So Im wondering now how to put him to bed that late. Like, schedule wise?

our daughter has always been a 12-hour-er. so meaning if she went to bed at 7, she would be up at 7 (with whatever regular MOTN wakings she was doing). now that she mostly STTN, she might not do 12 hours, but if she gets to bed late (meaning 8/830) then she would sleep til 8 for sure.

@MrsStar: Do you remember what her routine looked like? DS's last nap starts around 5 and is a cat nap. He eats at 6:45-7 and is down by 730. I don't know how to extend his time to make for a later night time!

lo slept better with a later bedtime (8.30-9) until around 17 months and then she wasn't able to stay awake much longer then 7pm so now her bedtime is 7pm.

Each kid is different. I learned to take all that sleep advice with a grain of salt. DS does not sleep more if he goes to bed early. He also doesn't sleep better if he naps well. I say go with the flow!

@lilteacherbee: @pinkb: @MrsH: What does your schedule look like then? We feed around 7, 10, 1, 4, and 7. Naps start around 8, 11, 2, and 5. The last one is a cat nap.

@mrbee: I was, before he was born. But now I go to sleep around 9-10!

DD had a late bedtime until she was like 7 or 8 months old, it was just what worked best for her. The it went to 7pm bedtime, which we still have now at almost 16 months.

My LO (5 months) does better with a later bedtime too. He goes down at 8:30-9pm, up at 5-6 to nurse, then back down until 8ish.

Ours sleeps a little better with a later bed time for sure. Sometimes her bedtime is later because she has taken a super long afternoon nap.

Just like most, I think an earlier bedtime makes for better sleep. However the few times we have accidentally gotten DS to sleep by 8:30 PM, DS has slept so much longer than normal. Normal is: bed at 7-730, wakes between 2-4 for feed, sleeps again until 6-7. The 830 bedtime has looked like this: bed 8:30, wake at 4:30 AM and last night DS slept till 630 AM. What gives? Has anyone's kid ever done better on a later bedtime? Im confused.
