We technically have this, because we built a second floor laundry room and kept the old washer and dryer hooked up in the basement. Even though they're in two separate places, it's actually pretty great. We use the basement one (top loader) for DH's super gross work clothes, stripping diapers, and oversized items. The upstairs (front loader) is for everything else.

If you cloth diaper, or have some other need for it, it's totally useful, but it's definitely not necessary.

I think this is great, we personally have no need with just the three of us.

It wouldn't work in my house though, because I am certain the outtake pipe to the city sewer wouldn't be able to handle two loads of water at one time.

@bluestriped bee: probably true, though I imagine if they are in the same room they would be on the same circuit.... I know in my house is split evenly down the middle and if I overload one side it shorts - that is, I was running the washer, dryer, computer, television and iron, ducted heating unit was also on that side and then I boiled a kettle and the whole thing shut down!

@FannyMae: I would guess if it was done correctly, they would be on a different circuit.

We finally got our upstairs laundry room finished, so now I have a set in the basement and a set off our room. I love it! I don't run both at once, but now the basement set is used for dog towels and "just mowed the lawn" clothes.

House is for sale, come and get it :silly:

I don't know how this would work - I wouldn't be able to run two loads of washing at the same time as there wouldn't be enough hot water running to both. Imagine running two washers, two dryers and the rest of your standard household appliances at the same time. Would probably blow up my electrical fuses from too much power being drained!

@Andrea: see I disagree. Towels are so satisfying- you wash and dry and then only have to fold a few items and put them away. Kid clothes it's like 5000 items to make one load and I'm folding forever. Then having to put them in the correct drawer when that kid isn't napping. I hate it.

So yeah I don't mind the washing and drying and even folding. I hate putting away.

I'm currently looking at homes and have seen several where people have a high end, flashier set that "does" a lot of things in their laundry room, then an older basic set that they use for oversize items like comforters, dirty sports/outdoor gear, etc. in the basement.

I wouldn't mind it, provided they weren't taking up space I'd prefer to use in another way...but I wouldn't prioritize this set up, either

Haha, sounds good. Then you could wash all your sheets, comforters, pillows, towels and stuff like that really quickly! I always dread doing those types of items. Clothes are easy.

Haha, basically like an in-house mini landromat?

I wonder if I'd really do more laundry with 2x the machines though. B/c even if they come out faster, I'd still have to fold them and put them away......

Well I'm just happy I'll have a full size washer instead of the tiny closet ones we have now. So yeah, doesn't seem necessary. There are plenty of other luxuries I'd rather have. But I'm sure it would come in handy plenty.

I don't know that we have the need for this. I have a friend who has two hookups because they're farmers. Her husband's farm clothes get pretty gross, so she has a washer specifically for them while she washes hers and the kids' things in the "non-farm clothes" washer.

I would kill for two sets! Or at least two dryers because the drying always takes forever. One of my babysitting families has a set upstairs and a set down stairs. I'm so jealous!

One day I'll make it happen 😀
