@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: dd was born 7lb2oz and was in nb 8 weeks, ds born 8lbs and in nb for 5+ weeks. He grew fast and is HUGE at 3 months though.. Gymboree 0-3m and 3-6 even have those fold over sleeves which I find really helpful. And they have some bright stuff but we have also had luck finding some toned down colors as well. Our son definitely goes through multiple outfits because he's a spitty baby, daughter wasn't so much. The first month or so our son was swaddled half the day anyway but we still used NB clothes.

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: SwaddleMe swaddles were amazing those first few months. You can put clothes underneath them but DD runs warm and would sweat like crazy if we had anything more than just her diaper under the SwaddleMe.

Oh - and we occasionally has days with 4-5 different outfits. Certainly not daily, but those multi-outfit days definitely happen!

@red_seattle: same concept, but this one http://www.amazon.com/Magnificent-Baby-Unisex-Baby-Newborn-Diamonds/dp/B00MO5G52Q/ref=sr_1_91?s=apparel&ie=UTF8&qid=1452699572&sr=1-91&nodeID=7141123011&refinements=p_89%3AMagnificent+Baby

Your baby was in two layers? Gown + ready made swaddle...I didn't realize there would be so much room in those SwaddleMes.

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: we're talking about these, right? It's easier because you can get to the diaper without dealing with snaps or zippers. With some swaddles, you can access the bottom half of baby without undoing the area by their arms. But if you have to unzip a sleeper, you have to get the kid completely out of the swaddle to change a diaper. And who wants to mess with lining up snaps in the MOTN? So, the sleep gowns really solve the problem.

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: DS slept in a sleeping gown (basically thin baby night gowns with elastic bottoms-- that's what we're referring to, right?) plus a swaddle of some kind, either blanket or a swaddle me. They make MOTN changing a so much easier. Once he outgrew those, we switched to onesies or sleepers depending on how warm it was under the swaddle. We did that until some time in month 4 when he started rolling over back to front. Then, when swaddled weren't as safe because of the rolling over, we did sleepers (fleece ones if it was a cold day) or onesies and a sleep sack like the ones Halo makes.

I think you have a good start and wait and see if you think you need more of something you like. Like others, we didn't like the sleep gowns at all, but some people love them. So you might find you like the long sleeve t's because they have the fold over cuffs, or you might like the short sleeves since it's warm.

Also, just a note about the SwaddleMe's - we liked them a lot but they stretch out after a couple uses, so you have to wash them frequently to get them back down to size.

When I was pregnant with DS, I only bought O-3 because of what everyone said about NB. He was born at 34 weeks exactly and I had NO clothes for him. He was in NICU 11 days, so once I was discharged from the hospital I had to run to Carters and buy a bunch of preemie stuff. Best laid plans... lol

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: I didn't do laundry that much at first. Not all babies spit up. It'll just depend on her! :) I only recall changing her outfit if she occasionally peed when I was changing her diaper. :) I probably did laundry every 3 days just because I didn't have a ton of clothes and wanted to stay on top of things.

I wouldn't do any long-sleeves for summer time, but that's just me. My daughter was born in June. We kept our house cool but it just seemed like overkill since it was 90 degrees outside! I had a few sleepers/gowns she never wore since she was swaddled for sleep. We just did onesies and socks at night and onesies/pants/socks during the day.

@jape14: Same! My daughter was swimming in her 0-3 month clothing at first and she was 8 lbs! I'd at least get 3-5 NB sleepers and then reassess after she is here! She definitely won't be in 3-6 months for a while, unless it is in a brand that majorly shrinks at first (like Gerber).

Next time around (IF there is a next time, ha!) I will at least have a couple NB onesies/sleepers.

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: I probably only do baby laundry once a week...we have a bunch of sleepers, which I switch out every night, and she barely spits up. So none of her clothes ever really get dirty, so I could probably go even longer if I wanted to. Depends on the baby!

I read most of this but not all. I just wanted to add that I had an average to long baby but he didn't wear newborn much because it rubbed on his umbilical cord and made it bleed. By the time it healed he was almost done with nb. Also sizes differ by brand BRU (kooala I think) and Gerber run small. Carters was true to size for us. So a safe bet could be a smaller sized 0-3. If you're in ac sleepers should be fine. Our nb sleeper we brought for going home was too short!

How often do you plan to do laundry? I was doing my son's laundry at least every other day, so I only had enough to get me through that. In the early days, I would give my son a bath at night, put on a fresh sleep and play or footie pajama and then he'd usually get changed between his morning and afternoon nap the next day.

I like to have at least 2 swaddles, in case you need to change in the middle of the night (if you go that route).

Those ready made swaddles and sleep gowns are both made for that right? To me they seem like complete opposites pieces to put the baby in. My husband is on the fence about the ready made swaddles given new AAP guidelines, but the type I choose looks roomy in the leg areas.

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: I think that list looks good. I think you might end up needing more 0-3 items but better to wait and see what you like before buying more (maybe you will prefer shorts rompers or onesies or whatever) plus see what people give you. Like others have said I've had people come out of nowhere to give us baby gifts- like my parents next door neighbors sent us a few outfits both times. They definitely didn't check a registry but luckily the sizing worked out.

Everyone told me that about newborn clothes too - LO was swimming in 0-3 months until she was 7 weeks old. I had barely anything in newborn sizes and while I was in such a postpartum haze, looking back I really wish I had some prettier things to put her in.

Next time I'll do lots of sweet footed sleepers, with zippers or magnet closures. Who wants to mess with socks on a newborn? I love the look of gowns and they do make for easy diaper changes but I hated having to deal with socks.

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: it looks like a good list except that I'd add more sleep gowns. They are so dang handy, as Mrs. Pickle said-- but 2 means you won't have any extra if you have a middle of the night blow out followed by a spit up fest. I read once to buy baby clothes & sheets in at least 3-- 1 for baby to wear/use, 1 in the wash, and 1 spare. We followed that rule with DS and it worked well.

Last question (I think) What else will I need? Here's my plan for the early stages in the NB/ 0-3 mos range.

4 A&A swaddle blankets
2 SwaddleMe originals, fit 7-14 lbs
2 sleep gowns, NB
6 sleep n play rompers NB
2 long sleeve side-snap onesies NB

Fair warning, it's hard to predict what sizes people will buy for gifts. I expected tons of newborn outfits, but we only received two. 95 % of the gifted clothes we received were in 3-6 months.

I ended up needing newborn outfits for both kids for at least a week- even M who was bigger at 8lbs 12oz. 0-3 month will be pretty big for the first couple of days, most likely.
I'd get a few NB sleepers, then more of the 0-3 and 3-6.
