@sorrycharlie: First off, I'm glad you got checked. Secondly, the lady who booked you the first time should never say something like that to you! It's not your fault you had a question and SHE double booked the doctor. Ugh! Anyway, keeping my fingers crossed that you'll deliver soon :-)

Glad you actually went in to get a simple swab at the doctor's office! I couldn't make it to the doctor's office in time so they told me to go to the hospital to check. At the hospital, they hooked me up to monitors, gave me IV fluids and everything and I was there for FOUR HOURS sitting in the hospital bed before someone with some sense came over and did the swab, which took seconds!!! I was so pissed that this wasn't done earlier!! I was never officially admitted, but then three hours after I left, my real contractions started and I went right back 9 hours later! Grrrrr!!

well I ended up calling back out of uncomfortable-ness (haha) and asking to cancel because I didn't think it was fluid. the nurses wouldn't let me, but told me that the OB had a cancellation at 3:30 (instead of 4:15, doubled) and I could come then - so I went. And wasn't seen until 4:45.

turns out it wasn't fluid, but he said I dilated another cm (to 2) and apparently your membranes "sweat"...producing more/weird discharge. he uses strange terms but seriously - who knew?!

anyway - one week to go! :)

Seriously what a b****! Don't feel guilty for going to get checked out! It's likely nothing, but on the offchance it is, you should find out.
I went in for the same reason at about 22 weeks, and they took a swab which took 2 seconds, and a urine test. The doc didn't even see me, it was just the nurse. They called the next day to confirm that the test was negative for amniotic fluid and that the urine test was clear.

I would definitely go in and get checked out! Thats what you pay them for. I found at 4 days past my due date that I barely had any fluid left in there at all, I dont know if it leaked out gradually without me realizing, I wish I had paid more attention to it but I was lucky they caught it when they did and it didnt cause any further problems.

The person responsible for double booking is the receptionist, not the patient! That's crap that she tried to make you feel guilty for calling about a problem.

I had a lot of discharge during pregnancy too. However, when my water broke it was a very distinct pop and then gush of water. I think if it will calm your nerves go to your OB. The person you talked to on the phone was rude. Your allowed to see your OB if you are worried.

@sorrycharlie: My water broke, but it was a slow leak instead of a gush because it broke at the top of my uterus. A couple tell-tale signs:

~A sweet smell
~Bigger gushes when you are sitting/laying for a period of time.

If you are concerned, you need to call your local L&D and go in to be swabbed. Once my water started leaking, they induced me.

I've heard from some other people in my due date group on facebook that they didn't have any idea they were leaking - that it was so minimal they had no idea. So that's why I'm nervous to not go in, but I seriously am dreading this appt now that she made me feel badly. She was like, "well we're down to 2 doctors today, so.." I didn't want to go in the first place, I just asked how to tell - but she insisted I come in. Ugh.

I didn't try smelling, but I notice it more when in positions that the baby is being "pressed" downward. For instance last night, I was on the yoga ball and when I stood up there was a damp spot under me (not sweat). I also noticed this morning sitting cross legged that I could feel almost like, seeping, if that makes sense.

I don't wanna be paranoid and whatnot but at the same time I don't want to ignore it and have something bad happen. Ugh! Damn bitchy nurses! :(

This is gross but have you tried smelling it? I've been told amniotic fluid smells very sweet and similar to maple syrup. Pee will smell like ammonia and discharge should have no smell to it. I ended up in the ER at 17 weeks because my doc was concerned my water broke but it was just a lot of watery discharge. But as the nurse said the only way to be sure is to do an amnisure swab. It's a very quick test and the nurse can probably do it so don't worry that you are a bother to the OB.

I was always told to lay on my side for twenty minutes and then stand up. If a large gush comes out, then it's probably fluid. If not, it was probably just pee or discharge. The thought is that fluid will keep leaking and collect/build up. I thought I was leaking once so I laid down and when I stood up there was no gush.

I wouldn't feel bad about going in to double check though.

Hmm...I would say it's good to get checked out just in case! I've heard that fluid doesn't stop trickling out, and discharge will dry white-ish. But either way, at this point I feel like it's an important thing to know if you are leaking fluid!

I have had a lot of discharge during pregnancy - but the past day or so I cannot tell if it's watery discharge or fluid. I decided to call the nurse to ask, and she told me that aside from sending me to the hospital, I could come in for a swab.

she goes, "I'll double book you with Dr. X at 4:15, but he's not going to be happy." and so I was like, "well I don't have to come in if there's a way to know if it's just normal discharge?" and she goes, "no, you should come in to make sure."

but now I feel so uncomfortable and awkward! You just told me the OB is going to be ticked at being double booked, so why did you do it? especially if I'm just being stupid and it's watery discharge or god forbid pee and I don't know it.

Did anyone leak fluid and know for sure the difference? Oy..
