Learn to wipe or wipe well? Because the latter definitely isn't happening anytime soon at our house. Holy skid marks.

They are in 3-yr old pre-K in the morning and daycare in the afternoon and no one helps them wipe, so I think until they figure it out some day far, far away, we will just have to deal with itchy bottom, gross underwear. Also, why can I not get them to consistently flush or wash their hands without being reminded 87 times. Ugh...

@travellingbee: practice practice practice!

There will be some ummm, skid marks :silly: What can you do?

Our DCP wont wipe after age 4 so we had no choice but to get him doing it.

Its a long process!!

I tell my kids to use 4 sheets and wipe, repeat if still poop, repeat if still poop, flush.

Repeat again if still poop on TP - we had so many clogged toilets which is why I got so anal about how they did it

@lovehoneybee: If it's a 5 year old skill then what do all these kindergarteners do who haven't mastered it?! Because I know for certain that they don't wipe kids in kinder. (I'm clearly terrified my kid will have poopy pants.)

@iluvboba637: we've tried to ask him to do it then we'll wipe after but he's not been successful really. His arms seem too short-haha! This seems way harder than potty training!

Oh good - I don't feel so bad now! M just turned 4 but has only been fully trained since the summer. She can wipe pretty well for pee but I mainly help for poop - I'll let her try then I finish. School will only assist if they really need to.

I don't have any tips because we're still working on it (4.5). But I took him in for an eval with early intervention last month and they asked about wiping. I said we're still working on it, and the occupational therapist in the room said that's a skill they really expect to see around 5, so I shouldn't be concerned that he doesn't have it down yet.

@travellingbee: thank you for posting this. Following because this has been the one question I ask at every preschool tour. DS (4 in March) has been at home since birth. He's been potty trained since 2but since my mom takes care of him she just wipes for him. Now that I'm looking to enroll him in preschool, I've been trying to teach him but he always just says I'll do it when I'm bigger(older). One preschool director says she teaches them to "get off the toilet, squat and go from the front since boys could go from the front and it's easier that way." I don't know but I wasn't really comfortable about it. Another Montessori school says they teach and then wipe once more for the student. I really want him to be able to do it himself before he starts school but I need suggestions on how to teach him too.

DS will be 4 in March and he really doesn't know how to wipe. I've asked him to try and he's uninterested and he frankly often poops at school. He's been potty trained for a year and a half but I'm worried he'll go Pre-K without knowing how! When and how did your LO learn? Any tips? Thank you
