@Cherrybee: Don't cry! Honestly, I think he is right in that you should at least go back to your current job and see how you feel. Returning from mat leave really does change a lot of things and your priorities have shifted so much. I think it will be much better to see how you feel after a few months back when you have figured out your routine and found your groove and then you can go from there.

Taking the paycut for the change of scene seems like an odd choice as it sounds like you would simply be bored again after 3 months at the new place...

I sort of did this while I was on maternity leave. It was all within my company though and I didn't take a pay cut so there was a little less risk. But I left a job that was just as cushy as you describe, very little stress, totally manageable work, boss with 2 kids who was always cutting out early herself, ability to work from home, etc. I was just getting really bored with the work and after years of cycling through the same accounts I wanted something different. I definitely made the right choice as I love what I'm doing now and you can't put a price on that, but I'd say if you rely on your income that heavily then maybe think twice or try to negotiate a higher offer.

I would apply for the other job just to find out more about it. Flexibility is huge, but so is that amount of time you are spending commuting. 100 miles 2x a week a lot! Seems like there is no harm in checking it out.

I hear you on the boredom. I was feeling really burnt out at my old job (where I was not earning all that much money) and had just started looking around when I got pregnant. It's tough when you just go through the motions all day long and come home and can't even say what you did. Then again, I find most jobs are kind of boring to talk about!

So I spoke to DH about it when he got in from work and it ended up in an argument. He fears that there wont be enough opportunity for career progression and when I said that I didn't want that anyway, I just want a lower paid job I actually enjoy, he got all bent out of shape, saying he wished he earned enough to allow me to do whatever I liked but he doesn't yadda yadda, he hates his job but doesn't moan about it yadda yadda..... so, yeah, it looks like I'm going to stay where I am. He is clearly in a mood with me now and I'm just trying not to cry.

Totally agree with @runnerd. I would stay for now and then see what you can find. You could apply and see! But you don't want to make a dumb move just for a change.

Honestly a lot of crap happened for me workwise when my babies were being born and were little babies, and I just hung in there. It was actually nice when things were so hectic at home to just show up, do my job and that was it.

Now that my youngest turned one, I have done a ton of thinking and prep work and I'm actually changing careers completely, even taking a salary cut to do so! BUT my husband and I are convinced it's the right move because of other factors and benefits. I have had a lot of moments over the past 2-3 years where I just wanted to be like "SO LONG, SUCKERS!" and in the end it's all working out for the best!

I would stay. As a parent, flexibility is more important to me than whether or not I'm bored. To me that is even more important than a bit more pay. If it was a lot more, than I'd have to think about it. If it was less, I wouldn't even entertain the idea.

I wouldn't make any life change this huge after having a baby, being on maternity leave, & having the return to work looming. I also would have quit my job, taken a significant pay cut (with daycare subsidy costs!), & lost schedule flexibility because I thought I'd be "happier". I'm glad I didn't. I've been back at work for a year & feel less like I hate my job (although I'm not 100% happy).

In a perfect world, I could do the job I love the most & make less money. But it's not what's best for our family right now. We need my income & a job change would ripple through our entire life. If the impact of the job change negatively impacts your whole family's lifestyle, it may be better to wait. I comfort myself with knowing I'll make a job change someday!

@illumina: He works in a shop, [your name]. He's already the manager, there's not really anywhere for him to go upwards. He has applied for so many other jobs that he might then progress upwards from - entry level customer service jobs in housing associations etc - but he never even gets an interview. It's really tough out there at the moment, every job has so many applications, he doesn't stand a chance. He is doing an Open Uni degree but it's experience people want and he just doesn't have it.

I say apply. If you don't get it, then there's nothing to decide. If you do, you can think about it more and decide then. Honestly, you spend so much of your time working that I think it's worth it to look for something that actually interests you. I also go by the philosophy that if you're happier, you are a better mother and wife.

My dad was a divorce attorney and in his opinion what killed a marriage was boredom. (I realize this is not about marriage but about work.) You don't deserve boredom in your job. If it isn't challenging you I would pursue the other option...

This is a really tough one! I voted to change, because when it comes down to it, you spend so many hours of your life working, and if you're totally bored doing it, that's a crappy way to spend such a large percentage of your time! But I definitely see the appeal of staying.

@runnerd: I don't know - they might allow it if I request it. I'm not sure it would make me happier in my job - just even more furious when my boss asked me to do something!!

@illumina: There's so much we need to do to the house - and I really need a new car - and it frustrates DH that I have the potential to earn big money but I don't want to. He keeps saying things like "we could send her to a better school if you got a director's job" and "we could send her to university if you got a directors job" - but all I want to do it stay at home and be a mummy.

@runnerd: Yes!!

I've been wanting to change jobs for years now because it's the only way to get paid more. However, my current job is flexible and I'm afraid I'll lose that if I change jobs. So here I am, 5 years later and still at the same company being underpaid because I can't let flexibility of the job go!

@Mrs. Taco: Really? Ask to do even more boring crap?? My attitude sucks big time!

I could be as proactive as I like and they would love me for it. It's really the kind of role where there is a lot a scope for that - there's always something that could be doing off my own back. But I cannot even muster up the energy to tell DH what I've been doing that day because I find it so, so uninspiring. He asks and I'm like "meh... stuff...."

Well, i'm big on the soft/non-tangible benefits. Flexibility is so big to me....it really would be a make it or break it aspect for my job.

4K isn't a whole lot over the course of 12 months...wouldn't the subsidized daycare make up for that? Plus the extra time that you would save not having a 100 mile commute?

I could give up working from home (which i don't do that often, but is a nice perk) but I couldn't give up the flexible schedule. now that I've had it, I just can't.

But, it never hurts to look, it never hurts to ask, and it never hurts to pursue your options.

You sound like me--I worked for a social housing organisation for 2yrs, so I know exactly what you mean :) I voted for "other". If I were you I would; go back to your current job (the one you had before maternity leave), bide your time, see how you feel about the work once you are back in the thick of it, see if anything else opens there and if not or you still fancy it, then think about a change. Also I wouldn't take the approach your Dh suggests...I would decide what an ideal/realistic income would be and stick to it. Sure everyone likes to earn as much as possible, but not to the extent it compromises your quality of life, enjoyment or sanity! Dh is our breadwinner and I always say as long as he earns just enough--I am happy. My perspective on what we "need" has changed since I had S.

@Cherrybee: does your industry allow for full-time work from home? I'm in a niche field, and after 5+ years experience work from home jobs exist, and I was able to land one this year. It's made all the diff in my happiness

fair point above that it never hurts to look. if you get the job you can see how you feel once you meet your potential colleagues, etc.

I'm in the same position where I'm so over my job but it's so flexible. and I've also done it long enough that I can do it really efficiently. I've had a lot of moments on and off where I wonder about my career - I could absolutely be making more, and I'm not progressing at all. but I always decide to stay because to make more and progress, I'd have to start working way more hours and give up my flexibility. I get paid very well for the schedule I have, and I'm still in the mode of wanting to prioritize my family.

that said I am not the primary breadwinner anymore (though DH doesn't make much more than me) - we traded that off for flexibility and some part-time after baby. I may even stay home for a while after #2 but would hope to come back to something when they are in school.

I think another hard transition in changing and having less flexibility may be responsibilities at home. obviously I don't know how you do it, but at our house I basically do 95% of the housework and childcare because of my flexible schedule, even though I technically work full-time too. if I lost that flexibility I would need more help from DH and possibly more outside help (cleaning service, etc), as DH works a ton and travels. it would also feel way more stressful trying to pack everything in. I think I would really resent having been asked to give up the flexibility. but if DH picks up all that slack on your end, it may not matter to you.
