I think it's fine to do, I wouldn't do it every year but you just have to do what is best for you. I did it once and no one has ever asked for more details. After being hired at one job I talked about the experience with my boss and she actually had met the owner before and thought he was a complete jerk.

I have a few of these and I just don't put them on my resume. One was because there were red flags and I actually changed fields after it. But I wouldn't want to bad mouth an employer so I just include it in my gap as a stay at home mom. The other was a high school/college job. The last was when I did a job that started as volunteer work and put off processing as an actual employee for awhile and actually worked for free. (It was not high paying and I was really there for the experience..) I was there total a year but only an actual employee for half of that time. For that one I list the volunteer and work time as one item. I'm worried about finding a job but earlier this year applied for a few and got call backs so I guess I have a chance. I ended up not doing the interviews because I was sick and pregnant.

I had a job out of college that I only did for 2 weeks. It was constant overtime every day, the actual job was NOTHING like I was told it would be in the interview, and the employees that worked there actually said to me, "You seem nice. When I saw you interviewed, I wanted to warn you to say no to this job!" I left my resignation on owner's desk on a Friday, and walked away. They held my paycheck as "ransom" until I came in for an exit interview, which actually ended up being a good thing. I was blunt with them as to why it was a horrible job and they claimed they learned a lot. Either way, I'm so glad I didn't stay there! I had no problem explaining it away on my resume.

@loveisstrange: I've done this twice in the past few years. I've been laid off twice also in this time frame so my job history is all sorts of crazy. I just explained the situation and that I did not feel the current job was a good fit for me long term.

@loveisstrange: In the industry I work in, people are constantly moving around from company to company so the question gets asked in an interview but generally it's not a reason not to hire someone.

If you have something lined up, I think it looks fine. I normally only question it when people leave a job before they have something else lined up. When they have gaps where they're not employed (or experiencing major life change), then I tend to assume they were fired and it took a while to find something else. Moving from one job to another doesn't bother me as much, as long as it's not constantly happening after short periods of time.

I think it's totally fine, like others have said, as long as it's a one time blip rather than constant job jumping (or getting fired over and over!). just have a solid explanation at the ready any time an interviewer down the line asks about the short time there.

With my first ever job, I quit after 5 months. I was a great employee and was already being encouraged to apply for other positions within the company, but the job itself was terrible and making me depressed. I quietly interviewed at other places and jumped ship when a better and more lucrative opportunity presented itself. It has never been a problem on my resume.

I think it's fine as long as you have solid explanations for gaps and any short time periods. As a hiring manager it always raised a red flag if I saw those on a resume, but it would not prevent me from bringing that person in to interview if the rest of the resume was strong - I would just make sure to ask about it during the interview.

Prior to my current job, my longest employment period was just over 12 months. It didn't really affect me getting a job (that I know of) because every job change was related to relocation. Good luck on your interview!

I've left two jobs after about 10 months, and no one's ever even asked my about it while interviewing or anything. That being said, turnover is pretty common in my industry, but I still wouldn't think twice about it in your situation. Good luck!

I wouldn't think twice about it. My husband has worked for 8 companies in the past 6 years (all FTE, not contract) and it hasn't seemed to discourage any employers from hiring him. I have some gaps (contract work plus mom dying plus moves) and the longest I've worked anywhere is 18 months - I haven't had an issue, either.

@yoursilverlining: Oh god no. I already decided I was going to tell them that I wasn't happy with the possibility for advancement at my current job, which is also true.

The reason im worried, is because my job history is a little weird due to moving overseas. I have a gap and then I worked part-time for a few months before we moved back to the US and then theres another year gap from me going back to finish my degree. I worked at my pre-move job for 4+ years though

I don't really think that it reflects poorly unless there is a pattern of leaving jobs after just a short period of time. I don't think a one off incident really raises a red flag.

I don't think it reflects poorly on you unless your work history makes it look like you always leave after a year or less (which might make an employer think you won't stay, or that there is a reason you only work for short periods of time).

I would probably come ready with a reason you're leaving, and I would NOT mention anything personal about the boss, although she sounds like a legit terrible person. Personally, I would probably say something about how you're enjoying your current position because of X, Y, Z but that you're looking for ______ type of advancement (and make it something that company B clearly fits with).

I started working at my current job in March. I work for a small company and im generally okay with my actual job and my immediate supervisors. However, the owner of the company is an abusive bitch. She regularly makes people cry. Shes also racist and hates gay people and has no issue going on loud rants to all of us about it. Shes an all-around terrible person and she makes my life miserable.

I have a phone interview on December 23rd with a large company. The benefits are fantastic, its an immediate $10k raise, and it has a clear advancement path. The company itself is consistently rated as one of the best to work for in my city. I mean, its kind of an obvious choice, if company B offers me a job.

My concern is how working at my current job for less than a year looks on my resume. How badly does that reflect on me?
