@winniebee: Thanks for the positive story!

@lilyofthewest: That makes more sense to say 6 months and then reevaluate after the actual procedure. I have left a message to discuss the anesthesia. I'm so thankful people have brought that up for me to question .

Our office recommends a minimum of 6 months before TTC as our baseline recommendation. The physician sometimes changes that to more or less time based on the location and amount of tissue removed.

I'm also pretty baffled by the idea of doing a LEEP under general. We do them in our office, in the regular exam room with local anesthesia (lidocaine) and some ibuprofen. Our patients do fine. General seems like a lot of unecccesary cost, prep, and risk for a quick and relatively painless procedure that doesn't otherwise require an OR.

I had one done in my doctors office in September. 3 shots of lidocaine no anesthesia (have never heard of anyone going under general for a leep--definitely question that). At the time of my procedure my doctor told me to plan on waiting 2 months to try again. She was very conservative and took very very little and did get all the margins (I want to say she took a millimeter). At my 1m follow up, my doctor said I had healed perfectly and could try again. I got pregnant two weeks later and am now 20 weeks pregnant and my cervix is looking fine. They will check again at 24 weeks. I've read a bunch of different recommendations for ttc - usually 2-6 months. A year seems like a long time.

@LilSprinkles: @wheres_c: Thanks for sharing!

@ElbieKay: My current doctor said she recommends waiting a year after the LEEP but I'm hoping to get some clarity on that and general anesthesia.

I had a LEEP without general. I would seek a second opinion on that and also how long you need to wait to TTC.

I was also put under general for mine. I told the OB I wanted kids one day and she was very careful not to take off more than she needed to.
I was monitored biweekly during pregnancy until 26 weeks.

@JennyG: Thank you! Yes 4 weeks post surgery. @littlebug: Def sounds like an asshole doctor.

Thanks for all your insight on general anesthesia. I went back and read through my notes from my phone call with the doctor and general is what she said. I'm going to call and get some clarification and see if there are other options. I don't want to undergo unnecessary risks. But sounds like other doctors have done general as well.

General seems like crazy overkill with unnecessary risk for a LEEP unless you have extenuating circumstances. I used to do them and they were done in the office just with local numbing for your cervix and most women did fine. Good luck!

I had a LEEP in 2010, and they put me under. I had no complications getting pregnancy afterwards (got pregnant the first time we tried). The doctor did warn me that I might be in labor for a long time since I had scar tissue on my cervix (which I was).

I was still in college, so nowhere near TTC, but I remember the doctor telling me at the time that because of the location of my lesion (the inner lip of the cervix), it was possible I'd never be able to maintain a pregnancy. Even though I wasn't even considering TTC at the time, I knew I wanted kids, so I completely freaked out. My aunt (who was a nurse in L&D) assured me that a) that doctor was an asshole and b) if there was any risk they would just do a cerclage and sew me shut.

So it COULD be that they are being cautious and recommending a year to lower the risk of preterm dilation. That would be my guess.

Also, FWIW, I went under general anesthesia for my LEEP.

ETA: When I DID get pregnant, it was 10 years after the LEEP was performed. I had bi-weekly ultrasounds from 13-26 weeks to monitor my cervix. At 26 weeks they saw no risk of preterm dilation, so they stopped the ultrasounds.

I had it done years ago. Procedure was in April or June, I think and I got pregnant around Christmas. They just checked my cervix a few times during the pregnancy but it was fine. I think the major risks are incompetent cervix, which your OB will monitor and can put in a cerclage if necessary, and scar tissue which could hinder dilation. I don't remember being told to wait more than a few weeks to heal before TTC but I'm not positive.

Eta: I was put under in a "twilight sleep" but not general anesthesia. General anesthesia seems like a big risk for a LEEP.

They're putting you under for a LEEP?? That seems... excessive. Is there a reason she needs to do that besides personal preference? Is it a huge or deep patch of abnormal cells? That would give me pause.

I had a LEEP in 2009 so before kids, I was terrified beforehand but it was no big deal, barely any recovery, and carried 2 kids to full term with no issues. I always thought they might need to do a cerclage but that wasn't necessary. I'm thinking that if you DID get pregnant that soon after a LEEP, that might be their strategy at that point. But I guess I don't know. I didn't have my 1st kid until 4 years after the LEEP.

@rpparker: Step away from Google!!! I had one done about 12 years ago, so I don't have a lot to offer as far as wait time before TTC, but please don't stress about not being able to have another baby. I had read that somewhere too, and was stressed when we started to TTC baby #1. Well, I'm 19 weeks preggers with #3. Will you have a follow-up appointment after the procedure to see if you are healing well?

@rpparker: I had one when I was young--years before TTC. My guess is that it will depend on how much is removed, the results, and how you heal. I don't think it automatically means you can't TTC, but I would try not to worry too much until you have more information. Eta: and definitely no more Dr. Google!

Trying to process some news this week and looking for positive stories!

I went to my annual GYN appointment first of Jan and had my pap. Came back abnormal and had a colposcopy two weeks later. I got the call this week that I have a high grade lesion and will have to have a LEEP in a few weeks. I can handle that news and am honestly not that worried about the procedure even though it will be my first time under general anesthesia. What I'm most upset about is that my dr told me we will need to wait a year after the LEEP to TTC. We have one adorable DD that is 20 months and we were hoping to start trying in March after an anniversary trip. I've read online some people wait 6 months, some just 4 weeks to heal before TTC. I obviously would rather wait than risk any further health issues but I'm in such a funk about letting go of having another baby this year/first next year, a longer age gap I envisioned and also the horror stories I've googled about LEEPs causing complete infertility (step away from Google). I'm an otherwise healthy 30 year old with no issues during my first pregnancy or delivery.

I found some older LEEP posts but wanted to see if anyone else out there is dealing with anything similar. Thanks!
