@Mrs. Pen: @shopaholic: It was always my understanding that there is a huge debate on how much of it is a genetic thing vs an environmental thing. Apparently two left handed parents only gives you a ~25% chance of having a lefty child :) There are some scholarly articles on the subject and possible genes have been isolated.

I just read this from the wiki on handedness which I thought was interesting and something I never heard of before:

Prenatal vestibular asymmetry
Previc, after reviewing a large number of studies, found evidence that the position of the fetus in the final trimester and a baby's subsequent birth position can affect handedness. About two-thirds of fetuses present with their left occiput (back of the head) at birth. This partly explains why prematurity results in a decrease in right-handedness. Previc argues that asymmetric prenatal positioning creates asymmetric stimulation of the vestibular system, which is involved in the development of handedness. In fact, every major disorder in which patients show reduced right-handedness is associated with either vestibular abnormalities or delay,[19] and asymmetry of the vestibular cortex is strongly correlated with the direction of handedness.[20]

Ultrasound
Another theory is that ultrasound may affect the brains of unborn children, causing higher rates of left-handedness in children whose mothers received ultrasounds during pregnancy. Research on this topic suggests there may exist a weak association between ultrasound screening (sonography used to check on the healthy development of the fetus and mother during pregnancy) and non-right-handedness.[21]

http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Handedness

@anbanan15: I'm not sure genetics plays a part. My cousin and her spouse are both LH and have three RH children.

I'm LH but it appears my son is RH. I tried to encourage the left hand hahaha.

Righty boy with two lefties for parents over here!

We've suspected early on that he was going to be right handed. It wasn't until he was drawling and feeding himself that it became clear he was a righty! We are interested to see what the next little one will be and which will win this time, genetics vs environment :)

Yup I think lefty athletes are more valuable because there are just fewer of them so other athletes have a harder time dealing with the differences.

I'm going to do a poll. Is your LO a leftie or a rightie, if you can tell? And also, when could you tell?

I also wonder if gender plays a factor. More left-handed people I've met have been male.

Fun factoid? DH said all (or was it most?) U.S. Presidents have been left-handed, and LH boys are more valuable in terms of sports playing because they're unpredictable. But don't hold me to that!
