@bluestriped bee: Oh wait, I think I just found it! It says:

"The Plan provides you, your spouse and dependents access to legal services at an affordable monthly fee through convenient payroll deduction. "

So I think that covers Hubs too!

@bluestriped bee: Thanks! I couldn't figure it out with my plan at work from the information they have on-line, so maybe I'll have to call or e-mail someone about it! So annoying!

@Adira: For my plan, the website shows which services are covered and who it's can use it (either you or your spouse or dependents). I would check with someone at your work to make sure wills can be done for your husband.

We have the same coverage at my work and I thought about getting it at the time of our adoption. We were dealing with ICWA (Indian child welfare act) which is extremely complicated to navigate. We also wanted our attorney to be quad A certified (adoption certification. We couldn't get that through the plan. For wills and probate we also wanted someone who specialized in that... But I wasn't really seeing great choices on our plan. So we decided to skip it and do legal fees out of pocket. Aside from the adoption, we've spent less in legal fees than we would have with the plan. Maybe in a different metro area it would work better?

@Adira: good question. I would assume that would cover a joint will?

I have the option to enroll in this as well right now. How different is it than if I created a will through Legalzoom.com? Does anyone know why a will created through a lawyer costs thousands and it costs less than $100 through Legalzoom? I assume because a lawyer can give you advice/guidance?

I'm so glad someone asked this question! I was planning on signing up for this at my work as well in order to establish our wills!

Question - since only I work at my company and have this, can I only get MY will set up? My husband would have to pay out of pocket to do his?

@ElbieKay: agreed, that is why it is important to check who the participating attorneys are before signing up. The practice we use is the same we would have used paying independently!

I used to have one of these at my old job, and I am pretty sure that my husband pays for one now. Several of his coworkers have had bad experiences with the quality of the lawyers in the service. So, we only pay for it as backup. We paid our own lawyer directly to handle our mortgage/condo closing last year.

@SleepyMonkey: @indi: it is also $15/month for me. I just need to research what lawyers are included in the network in my area, since I'm not familiar, but other than that I'm definitely leaning toward signing up for it! Thanks!!

@SleepyMonkey: Wow, really? It is a good deal! I was wondering how much those would cost if you got it on your own. My work is offering it for $9/ month, which is way cheaper than my gym membership (that I don't use).

@indi: i agree! i felt really good about it after i asked the lawyer what her normal rate was because my brother said he was interested in setting up his will, beneficiaries, living trust, etc etc. i live in nyc though, so legal services are probably more expensive than other areas of the country.

@SleepyMonkey: That's a fabulous deal! You basically pay for one hour of an associate level attorney for the full year and get TONS of service if they're doing even just a will.

If yours is that reasonable, @sunshineandsushi:, and you know that there are reputable attorneys in-network, I'd definitely look into it. Another idea would be to call around and ask what a general will package (health care directive, etc) would cost or what they usually charge per hour. That can help you decide if it's worth it to sign up or just pay out of pocket.

ours is $15/month and we got our will and all that stuff set up this year. it would have otherwise cost $2500. so it was worth it for us.

Question. For most of the legal issues, it says I'm covered. What does covered mean? Will I have to pay for any fees or anything?

ETA: Found the answer:
What does "fully covered" mean?
"Fully covered" means that Plan Attorney fees for the covered matter are paid for by your legal plan. There are no co-pays, deductibles or claim forms when you use a Plan Attorney for covered matters.

I think it can be a valuable service, but be sure to read the fine print. Our plan does not allow you to drop it once you enrolled. So you couldn't sign up for the year, use it to get your basic documents in order, and then drop it the next year. Make sure you get your money's worth!

@looch: Oh, wow. I just checked with the info that was given out with our benefits and they gave me a code to go in to see what is is covered and we (I) got a lot of coverage. It can help with adoption services (contested and uncontested) and name changes. Also, a bunch of other things, like living will, power of attorneys, real estate stuff, tax audit help.

I, also, read that my plan can only be enrolled during open enrollment, so not even a family change (like a birth) will allow me to enroll in this at a later date.

@sunshineandsushi: Perfect timing for this thread. My open enrollment ends today! I'm going to sign up!!

@bluestriped bee: I think there are two levels of service, at least that is what is offered at my workplace. One is for the basic stuff, like wills, home closing, etc and the other, more comprehensive service includes attorney representation if you get sued.

I'm about to enter open enrollment for 2014 and I've been thinking it would be worthwhile to add the legal plan benefit that is offered, since we need to set up our wills and establish guardianship for our boys if, God forbid, we were to both die.

Has anyone ever used this benefit through their work? Would love to hear your experiences!

It's Hyatt Legal Plan through MetLife. Or, should we save our money and pay it out of pocket?
