We were dealing with ICWA (Indian child welfare act) which is extremely complicated to navigate. We also wanted our attorney to be quad A certified (adoption certification. We couldn't get that through the plan. For wills and probate we also wanted someone who specialized in that... But I wasn't really seeing great choices on our plan. So we decided to skip it and do legal fees out of pocket. Aside from the adoption, we've spent less in legal fees than we would have with the plan. Another idea would be to call around and ask what a general will package (health care directive, etc) would cost or what they usually charge per hour. It can help with adoption services (contested and uncontested) and name changes.
