@Twolittlemen: We have LEGO from my husband's childhood but unfortunately his mom just randomly divided them up between him and his brother with no attention paid to sets...so we have pieces from sets but no complete ones. Anyway, this doesn't matter because DD and DH have a fantastic time just building new things out of the box. DH insists that this is the way to do it :) I do think the LEGO junior are good starter sets for this age, especially if he wants to follow instructions to complete a build.

@Twolittlemen: We have the $15 construction set. Its a good starter set but will probably get a bigger set next and then supplement in with a classic box of just mixed pieces.

The lego Junior sets are great!

DD is 4 and could pretty easily follow the instruction book. On each page, there is a picture of the pieces you need for that step and then a larger picture showing where to put those pieces.

The set we got builds 3 different things but you can only build 2 at a time (aka have to take them apart to build the 3rd thing.)

@Twolittlemen: My dad kept all of my Legos (I played with them more than my brother) and gave them to us last year when my son was close to 4. I had a set similar to the one I linked to (from the early 90s and we still have the idea book!) and my son is pretty good at looking at pictures and building. The Lego junior sets aren't bad either for older kids who don't have any Lego experience. We bought one for my soon to be 5yo nephew for Christmas.

@.twist.: yes- with duplo he builds mostly from imagination and the very specific sets have been a flop. But ideas are good for him. Also I want him to be able to build from a set or idea because I think its cognitively a good thing. And also because I get the feeling he wants to because he wants to be included in something that his friends like as well. (If he didn't want to be included it wouldn't be important to me that he was. I certainly don't think he needs to be like everyone else- but he's the one asking.)

@lamariniere: That's actually good. I've been hesitant to just buy blocks because my parents kept the 10000 from my brothers and my childhood, but these have new colors, new bases, an idea book, and a storage container.

Does he have patience enough to just build from his imagination?

Lego never used to come with a manual. I would dump out a box of lego and let him build.

This is just a google image search of "lego manuals" and it comes up with quite a few results! Maybe try some of these if he's really stuck on building "something" from building instructions.

Maybe something like this? It's a basic kit with idea book.

I have a 5 year old that loves to build with duplos (think cars, guns, dragons). Recently he's wanted to start playing more with small legos (I think mainly because the boys at school love them) but doesn't have ta lot of patience with follow along instructions (we have the juniors spiderman car). He prefers idea pictures where he can see the picture and build it to look like that. (I realize this is easier with duplo because the take less pieces.)

I will take any ideas for small easy to build sets and/or idea books. Or really any help at all. Thanks!
