I am also a huge fan of magnatiles. Expensive but worth it. My boys got them when they were 3 1/2 and the 1st day played with them for 4 hours straight! (It was a christmas gift I had saved for after christmas. I got the stomach flu one day and pulled them out. Life saver.) They use them almost every day.

My kids have duplo, lego jr and regular legos. They enjoy all three but the duplo still get the most use. My boys are 5 1/2 and my daughter is 3. We have a couple duplo sets but the best investment was the duplo train. We got the deluxe set, my 1st train and the extra track pieces. It's great that they can build it themselves. http://m.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=35290736&camp=PLAPPCG-_-PID18559452:TRUS&cagpspn=plat_18559452&eESource=CAPLA_DF:35290736:TRUS

DS got his first set around 4 and he did really well with them! He was able to follow the instructions by himself. You can't go wrong with duplos either though...DS is 6.5 and still plays with duplos often.

DD is almost 3.5 and we got her a Hello Kitty generic compatible set - just to see if she can handle the smaller pieces. Even though she says she likes the "small Legos", she doesn't play with them at all; she still plays with her Duplos. We actually already have one of those Lego Classic boxes (for age 4 and up) because DH was so excited, but he'll have to wait a while longer because she's not ready.

You could always do Duplo!

My 7 yr old loves his regular legos but still plays with the Duplo as well!

@creativemomma15: My son will be 4 in April, and he's just recently gotten into Legos. We have some of the juniors and some of the regular sets, and there isn't too much of a difference besides less pieces per item/vehicle, so they're still pretty small. That said, he is obsessed with them all lately and has asked for a few sets for Christmas. My husband has to help him assemble some, but I think they're a safe bet for you!

@lamariniere: Thanks for the advice... He hasn't been around regular Legos at all really so I'm not sure how he would do with them. I think my mom might have some... I'll have to ask her if he plays with them!

@autumnlove: Thanks! Yea, he usually uses the MegaBloks with his little sister to build tall towers and knock them over. I was thinking this could be better for him for building and creating!

We have one or two sets. They are great for beginning Lego builders! My son got his first around 3.5 and could do most of it by himself. We also got a ton of regular Legos around that age (all my old ones from childhood), and he was pretty quickly adept at handling the small pieces.

I think I have some (handmedowns) and my toddlers like them for building. I think Megabloks might be too easy for an almost 4 year old but regular Lego pieces might be too small.

Do you have Lego Juniors? They say for ages 4-7 but I didn't know what age you found them to be good for. DS will be 4 in March and I'm trying to come up with some good gift ideas for Christmas. MIL suggested Legos... He already has something like Mega Blocks but I was wondering if something smaller would be a good idea for his age.
