@looch: the display case sounds nice, especially if he doesn't take his vehicles apart. Funnily enough, when I bought his desk, I intended it for art projects, and later school, but he's not really the artsy type, so it quickly turned into the Lego table.

@lamariniere: I am thinking about repurposing some display shelves that I have to a spot right when you walk into his room. It wouldn't be wide enough for anything more than vehicles, but I think it would work for now. I was thinking about putting a table in his room to build stuff, but I don't have room and his desk is only for his art projects, lol..

@looch: We don't display things but my son has a table in his room that has become the designated Lego table. Everything is just kind of pell-mell on it right now. He will leave certain things alone for weeks at a time, but dismantle others to make new things. He really likes to add on to his creations, so it seems like we always end up with tow trucks with wings or speedboats that can hold 6 people.

We have a lot of Legos. We have the big blue tub of loose ones, Creator 3-in-1s, City sets, one of the 14+ level model sets, and an Architecture set that has not been assembled. And Duplos, which still get used pretty regularly.

I did the model with LO over the course of about a month (it was kind of a big project--we did it in the evening after dinner) and he helped find the pieces and put together the easier parts. It's a model of something LO has loved since he was about 3, and he was super excited about it. It was a fun thing to do together, but I would not recommend getting one of the models as a toy, because they're delicate and expensive. I still have sticker shock over that one, but the final result IS amazingly awesome and it was a really good way to hang out together, so it's hard to be too bitter. We've displayed it prominently in his room.

FWIW, I think the age ranges on Legos are a little random after about age 5. Up until then, I'd stick with the recommendations unless you want to help.

ETA: With the exception of the model, he usually builds the set and then it gradually gets destroyed/reconfigured as he plays with it. I hang on to the instructions in case he ever wants them again, but mostly the pieces become part of something else.

@looch: Ha! My son wants me to dig for pieces usually. :silly: But we do a lot of collaborative play since he knows I like buildings and am not so interested in his cars. Recently, I built a "tree house" and he made an elevator for it, I thought it was neat!

@lamariniere: Haha, my son won't let me touch the legos when he's building. He wants me to sit there and turn the pages in the book, lol.

He's beginning to be interested in taking the stuff apart and rebuilding on his own, which I am trying to be relaxed about.

@looch: My son isn't interested in the buildings either! There are some neat ones with Lego City and a couple of really cool Creator ones. I personally love building the buildings when he and I play Legos together.

@lamariniere: My son as well!

I would love to buy him a set that is a building, but he's not interested. Rather than spend a ton of money on sets he isn't going to use, we stick to the ones that are the single vehicles.

He's also expressed interest in the Minecraft sets, but those are for ages 8 and up and the number of pieces...I think it would be frustrating.

We currently only have duplos (LO is almost 3). We have some character themed sets (Doc McStuffins house and Mickey Mouse birthday train) and some more generic ones (one was just basic, one had a little store with food). She likes the ones with wheels most (train and little cars).

We have tons of Legos because we have all of my Legos from childhood in addition to the Legos we have accumulated since DS got interested. Like @looch: Most of ours are Lego City for the vehicles. We also have one or two 3-in-1 Creator sets and those are really neat too. We have one Lego Junior fire station (we actually have 2 since we got a second one as a gift). One of my son's favorite things to do is flip through the Lego catalogue and tell me what he wants for his birthday...which isn't for another 6 months!

DS is 2.5 and he has duplos. He started getting them when he was 15 months. He loves them!! He has mega blocks too, but he doesn't play with those too much.

DD has a friends house that she got for free when we visited the store in Charlotte.
She has a few princess castles (Ariel, rapunzel, jasmine, Elsa and Anna)..
A duplos house set.. And I think that's it. All were gifts except for the rapunzel. She's 5.

What Lego sets does your LO have, and how old are they?

My girls have some Duplos, and then they have the regular size Legos. They have a horse stable set, and ice cream set, and then some regular Lego's to go with them. They are both really into them lately ( almost 4 and 2, so my youngest needs to be watched). I'm hoping to add to their collection for birthday's and holiday's. I think the Lego City collection is really cool, as well as the Lego Friends.
