DH took three weeks off. All paid - two weeks paternity leave and one week vacation. The first week was when I was in early "false" labor. Honestly, he could have gone back a little sooner. He started to get a little stir crazy and I had plenty of help from my mom. It was almost like I had too much help in some ways. I would have liked him to taken time off when she was a little older and easier to bond with and I was in need of a break!

At his new company, he gets 4 weeks paid paternity leave which I think is great! If we have another LO I am going to encourage him to split it up if they will let him.

My husband took off the week that we were in the nicu, and then went back to work from home right after. No one was taking care of me, and I'm still angry about it. This week he'll take 2 weeks off after we come home, and it should be much better.

My husband's company doesn't give any paternity time (lame) but he's able to use accumulated sick time so he's taking 2 weeks when the baby comes and then 2 weeks to stay home once my leave ends and I go back to work.

@mrbee: Yes, part of it will overlap. DS is due mid-November, so she will have to finish out the semester right after his birth and I will be home, but from mid-December til mid-April she is off (and then the summer, kind of, too) and I have until mid-Feb. So 8 weeks home together!

We had DS in mid November, and DH was able to take about 6 weeks off. It was an amalgamation of vacation time, holidays (Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's) and then about 2 weeks unpaid.

He now works at a company that offers 4 weeks paternity leave. On top of that I think he'll do another 2 weeks of personal time/vacation.

D was born on a Thursday. He took Thursday, Friday, Monday, and Tuesday off. Back to work Wednesday when my mom came to stay with me for a few days. Those 4 days were paid, but he had to use vacation time.

I think he's planning to take a week off unpaid. He just started a new job, so he doesn't have any vacation yet. He'll be working 4 10 hour days, so once he does go back to work, he'll still be home with us for 3 days a week.

He took 2 weeks. I think he could have taken 3 but he had to get back and finish a project but at least he worked from home a couple days a week.

I think now he gets 6 weeks. But he won't be able to get it. You take too much time off and it hurts his metrics, which determines bonus and raise.

DH gets no leave, but saved up vacation. He works 10 hour shifts - typically he works 5-6 days but only has to work 4. He was able to use 4 days vacation each week and take two weeks off. The paychecks weren't as large as typical but we weren't paying for daycare yet! He had to set his PTO ahead of time but his work was fantastic about being flexible.

This time he's doing the same, hopefully they will be as flexible (or she could be born on her due date-ish like LO1 was!) but he actually got the FMLA forms this time, so he can't be punished for having to move that PTO if she comes early, etc.

If anyone knows where DH works, I'm sure they might find it as surprising as me that that company doesn't offer any paternity leave or paid family leave. They might for executives and not hourly employees but it's still very disappointing compared to the worldwide image of his company as such a family company.

My husband gets 6 weeks of leave paid at 100% but since that eats in to my total allotted leave (1 year) he is only taking 4 weeks off. He also doesn't want to be away from work for longer than 4 weeks for fear of everything he will need to catch up on. We are very lucky to have that available though!

D gets 3 days PTO which butted onto a weekend. He could have used more of his own vacation time, but my mom was here and we figured we should save that time for when she was gone and I really needed help.

He'll take more time with this one, because he has more time saved up, it's their slow season, and baby will be born over the holidays.

With DS1, DH took a total of 6 weeks. It was a combined time off with PTO, holidays, paternity leave, and some extra time that his boss offered him at the time.

With DS2, DH will be taking a few weeks off but it will be on/off with going back to work instead of all at once. It's just the nature of his position now that he wouldn't be able to take such a long chunk of time off.

DH was allowed 4 weeks of paid paternity leave. He took 1.5-2 weeks with both and then used the rest over the next few months to take a day off here and there. It was nice to have him home for those first couple of weeks!
