I didn't pump all that much while I was on maternity leave, tho I should have to really build a stash. I remember getting maybe 2 oz each side pumping for ~20 min? My usual time is 20 min and I get 4-6 oz. Bad days 2-3 oz.

@LindsayInNY: EP'ing though, that was IT. Since you are BF, you are likely to get less pumping because she's taking some from the source too. Keep that in mind :) And a baby is the most effective thing to drain a breast- way better than a pump.

@Raindrop: @kjpugs: Sounds like my pumping now... I'm hoping it'll increase because it's still early? I don't know how much she gets at the breast versus me pumping.

@kjpugs: For me I think the most I ever got in a day with my first was 6 ozs! Oh man I totally hear you about handling motherhood better without pumping. When I stopped the first time ... there was sooo much freedom... I didn't have to worry and stress out about pumping.

This time around since I'm making a good amount I feel better about provide LO breast milk but I still feel like it sucks and debate almost daily weather to quit or not.

I would totally join your club. I will say I totally admire women that breastfeeding comes naturally to because I totally suck at it.

@Raindrop: Typically I would get less than an ounce at every session except the first! I stopped by 3 months too. The most I ever got in a day was just under 8 oz

We're not attempting this time. I have anxiety issues and truly didn't handle motherhood well until I stopped pumping. I have PCOS so it wasn't necessarily unexpected! I feel the same way about the EP I did- not sure that breast milk was worth all the effort and anxiety since stress is not good for your baby either (and boy was I stressed!)

There should be a club for people who have gone through this so we can drink wine and complain!

@kjpugs: *big hugs* With my first I was also an EPer and at 3 months I was pumping 1-2ozs for my 30 minute sessions too... I quit pumping right before I went back to work. I totally thought it was a waste of time too. I almost didn't even *try* with my second but something a nurse said made me feel like I should give it a try and now I'm just barely keeping LO completely breastfeed... It has been an upward battle and I'm still not sure if it's worth it! :)

When I EP'd, I would pump for at least 20 minutes and would get at max maybe 2 oz total. Typically it was closer to 1oz or less. Which is why I stopped even trying. WOOF! I wish I had those hours of my life back (OR the results some of the ladies above had!!! My aunt's sister told me she stopped doing her mid-night pump and just got 12oz in the AM and I almost puked of jealousy!!!)

I am an EPer since birth but starting from 3 months old… I’m went down to 4 pumps a day for 20 minutes each with 3 of those sessions making 7 ozs and my morning session making 9 ozs with an average of 29 ozs a day which is just enough to keep LO completely breastfeed. LO is currently 6 months and it has been the same. I hope to go down to 3 pumps a day… soonish.

LO is 11 1/2 months and I EP. I pump 4x a day. In the morning I get 12 ounces, maybe 14 on a good day. 2x at work, getting 6 ounces a time. Before bed, 6 more ounces. I pump for around 10-12 minutes a session. I'm barely keeping up with demand at this point, I think my body is starting to slow it down.

@shellio: That is really interesting! thanks for sharing. it helps to alleviate some of my worries as a first time WOHM
@Adira: J is 11 weeks. I just must be comparing my milk now to the 9-12 mo milk from L so maybe it's normal for it to look watery at this stage.

@Ms.Badger: How old is your LO? The younger he is, the more likely your milk will look watery. It'll get fattier as your LO gets older.

My LO is 7 months and I pump 15 minutes usually. But with my first, I had to pump 25-30 minutes.

I pump once a day after LO goes down for the night. I usually pump for 20 minutes and get 5-6 oz. Sometimes 4 if he's nursed close in time to the pump session. It's been around 5 oz since he was probably 3-4 months. Before that I would get 3-4 oz.

My output varies so much depending on time of day and obviously whether I've just nursed her or I'm pumping to replace a bottle feed. 0.5-7 oz and I pump for about 20 min (flow usually stops way before that, but I'm trying to increase supply).

@Ms.Badger: I started out pumping 8 times a day, dropped to 6 times a day when LO was 3 months, then 5 times a day when I went back to work. By the time LO was 6 months, I dropped to 4 times a day (total in a 24 hour period) which I continued until LO was a year and I started to pump wean.

When I was at 4 times I day, I usually pumped 16-18 oz in the morning pump (I think my "record" was 20 oz in 1 morning pump), then only 5-7 oz each pump the rest of the day. But by that time, LO was drinking 28-30 oz a milk a day, so I was barely staying ahead of her pumping around 31 oz on a lower day--especially because my DH is the worst milk waster of all time. ;-)

@Ms.Badger: Mine used to look like heavy cream, but I was getting 3-5 plugged ducts a week - it was a nightmare! I started taking letchithin pills to help prevent that, and now my milk looks super watery no matter how long I pump for. LO is still gaining and hasn't had any problems or any indication of an imbalance.

LO is 10 months and I WOH. I nursed at the start, then we did morning-only nursing from 3-8 months, then he went on strike so I EP now. I'm down to 4 sessions of 15 minutes each, and generally get 44oz/day.

I have oversupply, so I rarely pump until I stop flowing. However, I always pump until everything feels "squishy"/empty, because I'm prone to plugged ducts.

My first morning pump is usually 14-17oz, and my pre-bed pump is 10. During the day, at work, I average 8 oz. for both sessions.

I don't pump anymore but in the first month I had to pump for 30-45 minutes and I'd get anywhere from 2-4 oz. later when my supply was more established I'd get 6-10 oz.

I pumped 20-30 minutes ideally. 15 minutes was always a little too short for me. Early on I would get a lot, 8-15 oz, but after I went back to work and had to pump so much more (probably stress contributed too) I eventually would only get 3-6 oz per session.

@Ms.Badger: I remember a lactation consultant who was big on the current lactation literature telling me that there is traditionally a big fuss about foremilk and hindmilk but newer ultrasound and content studies suggest that there is a lot of mixing in the breast so not to worry about a full feeding or pumping session (if fore/hind milk are your main concerns). I don't have details but thought that was interesting.

LO is almost 4 weeks (!!), and I'm still EPing since she's a preemie and can't nurse for crap. I do about 25-30 minutes (I go until empty), and get a minimum of 3oz, up to 7 or so if I've gone longer than I should. I'm about to start power pumping to increase supply because she's eating almost 3oz at a time now, so she's about to get ahead of me. (Also going to meet with an IBCLC very soon to work on nursing.)

My son was in the NICU so I had to pump from birth. It's changed over time, but in the early days I'd pump once a day in the morning after his first feeding for 10 minutes. I always had some extra milk then, and got about 3-4 ounces. Now that he's 8 months I pump around 10 PM and get anywhere from 4-6 ounces, and still pump after that morning feeding and get between 3-5 ounces. I know LCs are very against pumping early, but I think it helped my body get used to the pump and, as a result, I get what I think is a decent amount of milk. I still pump for 10 minutes at a time. Good luck figuring it out!

I had oversupply and it was worst in the morning, so I actually had to purposely NOT empty my boobs during my first pump session until DD was much older, or it made things much worse. I generally pumped about 15 minutes and got 12-15 oz (I probably could have gotten 18-20+ if I'd pumped until empty). Then I nursed DD at lunchtime and pumped again in the mid-afternoon, 15-20 minutes and got around 8 oz. This changed around 10 months, since my supply started to decrease and I also stopped going to see DD during the day (I think these were just coincidence, not related, but who knows). At that point I pumped twice a day for 20-25 minutes each time and got about 9 oz in the morning and 4 oz in the afternoon, which exactly met DD's bottle needs (she took 3 5-oz bottles while I was at work). Occasionally I'd have to supplement with on ounce or two from my freezer stash but I could usually squeeze out enough.
