I wouldn't get induced just for this reason especially since states can and do change their age cut-offs and you might move before they start school.

My brother was born Sept 1st. He was the youngest in his class and hated it because he didn't get to do anything when his friends did.

I wouldn't get induced just because of the cutoff, but I was always the youngest in my class and I loved it.

I wouldn't choose an induction over this, but in general, I'd rather my child be among the oldest in his class than the youngest. That would matter more (and still only very slightly) than the cost of an additional year of daycare. Dh and I were both the oldest in our grade growing up. Plus, I know I personally would want to be induced as late as possible anyway.

If it were me, and i was being induced for medical reasons, I would want to be induced before sept 1st, because that's when my deductible starts over. You can't determine when a child will be ready to start school until its almost time for them to start. So that would not have been a consideration for us.

I think this is something that you kind of have to wait and see how your child is by that age, if they seem they can handle being the youngest then why not. I also wouldnt let that be deciding factor for when or if to get induced.

This was a consideration for me. My original due date was 8/23. I was induced on 8/17 (for medical reasons) with LO being born on 8/18. Long before we ever discussed induction I told my doctor that I really didn't want to go into September as I didn't want my child to be the oldest in school. I knew first pregnancies can go long and that was a line I didn't want to cross.

@Rubies @MrsSunglasses: Exactly. I have my 39 week appointment today, and if they induced me today, I would be okay with it (for swelling and rising BPs).

If I had to get induced for medical reasons and I had a pick of any day during the last week of August/first week of Sept, I'd choose to have it done before Sept 1st.

I am 39/1 today, and thought about the Sept 1 cutoff for many schools at several times during my pregnancy . . . although my concern wasn't over the short-term financial issue of another year of daycare/preschool, rather, my concern was that butterbean would be ready for school (I was one of the youngest in my classes), but that she wouldn't be able to go due to her age.

ETA: Ultimately, I decided that it was probably better for butterbean that I not be induced unless it was medically necessary. :)

I would never get induced for those reasons. Unless it's medical obviously. My son will be the youngest and the idea of possibly keeping him a year in daycare for him to be the oldest in his class has crossed my mind.

Honestly, it really depends on the child. Though I think I will let things as they are. Meaning both my kids will be the youngest of their grade.

Mrs.Cowgirl wrote a great post about it.

I live in Texas where the Kindergarten cutoff is September 1st. I have a co-worker that was induced last night, but in the past week she's really been debating whether to be induced so that she delivers before September 1st. If she delivers before Sept. 1, her daughter would be the youngest in her class, but she would also save money by having one less year of daycare/preschool. If she delivers after Sept. 1, her daughter would be the oldest in her class, but she'd have to pay for another year of preschool. So, what would you do??
