If you mix cornstarch and water, it makes a really weird mixture that acts like both a solid and a liquid. I put my LO in his high chair and put a bunch of it on the tray, then let him go crazy pushing it around and trying to pick it up.
Honestly, though, he spent about 10 minutes this morning just taking clothes in and out of the laundry basket, so I'm not sure he needs much to be entertained

@MoonMoon: my LO hasn't been a fan of the kiddie pool so far. She likes the regular pool and the bath, so it doesn't make a lot of sense. I'm going to keep trying bc I envision myself lounging next to her drinking a lemonade while she splashes around all afternoon. Yeah, right :)

@NaturallyCathy: either. She's 9 mo.

@yoursilverlining: thanks for all the ideas! I think my LO is a bit young for a lot of them, but hopefully others can use them. I'm going to come back to this list as she gets older. I should get some bubbles though!

I'm not a SAHM, but here are some fun activity ideas that LO has done at daycare:

Stamps: use cut up sponges (cut into shapes), apples cut in half make a star shape, paper towel tubes bent into shapes like heart, circle, square and triangle. That last one is great for working on identifying shapes once they are old enough.

Take a ball with nubs on it and squish it around & roll it around in a bag with paint, then take out the ball and roll it over paper. Leaves a really beautiful print that looks a bit like snow.

Art with things you pick up on a walk (shells, small stones, leaves, sticks, feathers, etc.). Glue onto paper to practice small hand motor skills.

Make collages from magazines; works on small motor skills (cutting out pictures, glueing to paper). Themes like food (name types of food pictures you see, or colors, etc.)

Grow your own plants: lima bean in a ziplock bag - put a lima bean, a paper towel and a few drops of water in a ziplock bag. Will sprout in a day or two. Grass in a little plastic cup - grass grows very quickly.

String art: drag a piece of string through paint and then drag it across paper, roll it around paper, etc.

Make your own playdough.

Help make food: fruit salad is good because they call identify fruits and colors, help stir, etc. Other salads are good too for the same reason. Pizza too.

Chasing bubbles (whether "chasing" means looking at, leaning towards, crawling towards or working on walking towards!).

Make a mailbox out of an old box, paint it, talk about mailmen and letters and mail, then make some "letters" to put in mailbox and mail to friends/family.

Hmmmm....that's all I can think of off the top of my head that they've done recently!

Are we trying to stay indoors? Or is outside an option? How old is your LO?

Love this thread! And the first time I tried water play, the bowl was overturned within a couple of minutes!

My lo loves taking off the lid to a big plastic canister, then putting it back on again, rinse, repeat!

Now that it's summer, he loves sitting in the kiddie pool, sometimes entertains himself in there for 20+ minutes, with a couple of toys or pebbles. I just sit nearby to make sure he's safe.

@stargal: that's a great idea. My LO is only 9 mo, but I could see her liking that soon.

@Boogs: thanks! We will have to try that.

@skipra: I'm totally dumping some of DH's things out of our bin like that this afternoon. LO has been sick, so we are stick in the house.

@Zbug: We use one of those plastic totes that fit under the bed for water play. It's way too big to tip over and DS loves it!

We have fun making chalk paint using water, cornstarch, and food coloring. It's a fun and easy outside project!

I like to take oats and put them in a big bin (with a tablecloth underneath on the floor) and give him measuring cups and little shovels and let him go to town!

What about stamps and a stamp pad.

This also looks cool http://www.funathomewithkids.com/2013/02/homemade-edible-paint-infant-s-started.html?m=1

Anyone else? We need some new activities over here.

I tried water play by giving dd a large bowl filled with water and a couple of bath toys. Of course, she immediately dumped the entire thing over. Fail.

I think I'm going to make a maraca today http://makingmulticulturalmusic.wordpress.com/2011/10/12/make-some-marvelous-maracas/.

We may also try this baby art project. I think you could also just use ketchup and mustard inside the ziplock bag. http://www.manager-to-mom.com/2011/09/babys-first-art-project.html?m=1

I save plastic yogurt containers, put pennies, rice or pasta inside and use electrical tape to make it stay closed. She loves banging them around (and eating them).

What activities have you found?
