@prettylizy: oooh sounds delish! i would've had more than a taste or two ;) i've had a few tastes of wine, but never more than 1/2 a glass and only good wine (if i'm only getting a 1/2 glass max, i'm drinking the good stuff!)

I can count on one hand the number of rules i've actually followed, because i honestly think the spinach i eat in my salad every day is more risky than the soft cheese, froyo, deli meats, etc. and i'm not giving up my salads!

I ate Brie from Europe, heck I even ate sushi, so I didn't follow the rules. In fact, the only rule I was told to watch was a certain type of lettuce that grows really close to the ground. Everything else was fair game.

I think if it's pasteurized and fresh, soft cheese is absolutely fine - I definitely ate it while pregnant. I probably wouldn't eat soft cheese that's been sitting in the fridge for awhile (since bacteria seems more likely to grow in nice oozy brie as opposed to say, a really hard sharp cheddar)...otherwise, go for it! Same goes for things like deli meats, smoked salmon, etc. My doctor, when pressed, always told me to open a new packet, eat what I wanted to, then let my hubby finish the leftovers.

But don't you always here pregnant women complaining they can't have Brie/soft cheeses? Or that they're going to have a huge cheese plate after they give birth? Why is that?? I always thought it was strange since I pasteurized cheese is rare in the US

Cheese was one of the only things I could keep down! My doc said almost all bries and camemberts are pasteurised nowadays (unless in Europe buying the really good stuff) so it was fine. I lived on Brie and crackers both pregnancies. No two headed babies :)

Yes, as long as you don't buy raw cheese at the farmers market you're fine (and its a very good chance youre fine eating raw cheeses since the rest of the world does it). Grocery stores here really can't sell unpasteurized cheeses, so haha suckers who avoided Brie - more for me! Nom nom nom, I ate my weight in Brie when I was pregnant.

The grocery stores I usually go to have fancy-schmancy cheese counters so there are lots of raw milk options...I just double-check that I'm not choosing one of those, and happily enjoy my pasteurized cheese :)
