My DD was the same way - always wanting to look out and pushing against me/crying when I made her face inwards, so we bought an Ergo 360 in addition to our mesh Ergo Performance when she was 8 months old. We used it all through our trip to Europe when she was 9 months and she LOVED it! We use both carriers depending on the situation, but now that she is 17 months and 23 lbs, she definitely gets heavier faster being worn outward-facing (I guess it's because she's not wrapped against my body, maybe?) so I prefer the back carry, but I can do that with either carrier.

Thank you! DS loves when he sees himself in the mirror. If he is fussing, I'll take him into the bathroom and he'll start smiling. Meanwhile, my DD does not do that. She smiles but not when she sees herself.

Last night, I was talking to him and he was laughing and I said 'Are you laughing at my face?' He giggled. I asked him three times and everytime he laughed. Of course, when I tried to film him, he didn't laugh. That boy!

@Littlebit7: Thanks. Good tip. I'll make sure to add that to my list of things to check when I forward carry them.

@junebugsmama: I tried a tandem hip carry with a ring once and it was messy. I think I should have tried a hip carry with one baby, mastered that and then tried tandem carrying.

@Dahlia: Yeah, my babies are around 11 lbs and I was quite comfortable. I have tried ring slings in the past and I felt back pain afterwards. I hear once they get to 20 lbs, it's harder to front carry.

What I haven't tried yet is a back carry with my fly tai (mai tai). I heard I can but just nervous about it. I think I need to watch someone do it at my local BWI meeting before I feel comfortable.

@ShootingStar: It's a Bekhni... or Beco and Tekhni collaboration  ... I think it is technically a wrap conversion but it's considered a half, I think? Right now, Beco only carries Tekhni wrap conversions. I believe they have them in the Gemini and the Soliel.

@Littlebit7: Thanks for that! I've worn him facing out twice in our Gemini for a short period each time, but felt nervous about doing it, even though the carrier is supposedly designed for it. I'll try rotating his hips/bum. That should place his hips in the W position?

So cute! They look adorable and I think the limited time you are doing it is absolutely fine. You also might want to try a hip carry if you have anything that allows it, like a ring sling. It's kinda how you would carry them in your arms while doing stuff so you might like it!

I really only wrap- so there's no facing out there... when my daughter got old enough to want to look around (she was happy in front carries facing in until probably 10 or 11 months) I learned to back wrap her. I'll do the same with #2

I think as long as you're using an ergonomically sound carrier and aren't doing it 24 hours a day it's totally fine!

I once saw a fellow with a baby facing outwards in a bjorn on his back.... which is a big NO-- those carriers are not meant for that at all! Most people wouldn't do that anyways though!

*ETA: we also did some hip carries before we started back carries

We had an Ergo360 and DS had a very strong preference for facing out once he could hold his head up. I almost never wore him facing in, because he would just try to spin around and face out the whole time

@bluestriped bee: They are soooo cute! And getting so big!

I've never worn my kids facing out, since we never had any carriers that "allowed" it. They liked being snuggled facing in, though. I found that once I started wearing them on my back, it sort of serves the same purpose as facing out, since they could see over my shoulder a bit.

I had an Ergo 360 and DD did love facing out for those few months! Then I sold it  I figure when I have the next baby, there'll be newer versions of everything that I'd want anyway. But she was really only interested in outward facing between like 5-8 months.

I originally had a Boba 4G which did not allow forward facing. My daughter hated it so I sold it and got the Ergo 360 after trying out a friend's forward facing carrier. Over time she was fine with facing inward as well. The Boba came up much higher which I think made her feel trapped/restricted based on how squirmy and angry she would get.

I do tend to start with inward facing and if she is super awake/really taking in her surroundings that is when I will switch her to forward facing. The longest we've done it is maybe 30-40 minutes on a walk and it didn't seem to cause any issues with over stimulation!

PS your twins are super adorable!!

My LO loves facing out in the beco. I wear her out for short periods of maybe 20-30 min a few times a week, sometimes longer if we are really running around. She loves it. I think the most important part is to make sure you are rotating their hips and tucking their bum under them once you get them into the carrier. Even a facing out carrier can be a quasi-crotch dangler if you don't make this small but important adjustment. I just grasp by either hip and sort of rotate her bottom away from me (tucking her tailbone under her). I'm a physical therapist by the way so I'm not just making shit up. :)

Is your beco wrapped in a tekhni?? DS never really cared about front facing at that age, and I was worried it would put too much strain on my back. I did do a lot of hip carries though, and they can see out that way too.

I did it occasionally in my Beco Gemini from about 4-6 months! Like you, I only did it at home. She loved it but couldn't tolerate it for very long, and it wasn't as comfortable for me either. As she by a little older, she liked facing in much more and she felt too big to be facing out in the Gemini. Happy babywearing!!

My son wouldn't tolerate facing in or a wrap carrier. But he loved facing out at this age! A friend had given me a Baby Bjorn carrier and I used it at this age.
Once he could really sit up and see over the top of the Ergo, he was fine with facing in and we used that through toddlerhood.
(The 360 wasn't around at the time, I would've loved it!)

So I noticed that both my babies love being held facing out. After a few weeks of getting nothing done and them wanting to be held, I realized I had a Beco Gemini and it allows forward facing. I pulled out the manual and it said its good for babies 4 months and up with good head control. Woohoo! Both babies can do that.

I did hear little rumblings on Babywearing sites about front carrying being bad. I heard from Babywearing experts from my local Babywearing group that it's safe as long as it's a carrier that is approved for front facing. I think Ergo 360, lillebaby and the Beco Gemini are ones that are 'approved' and safe for the baby. Oh, my babies don't have any history of hip dysplasia.

I know overstimulation is something I need to watch for but so far I've only worn them inside the house and for short periods... Well, because I have twins and one always needs to be fed or changed. Then after eating they fall asleep so my window of Babywearing is small. Haha.

If you babywear, have you let them face outwards?

Look at these two happy babies!
