@ladybee: It was simple - sometimes a bath, sometimes not. Then, white noise and dim lights, swaddle, bottle/breast, lights out, binki.

@winniebee: Restarting an old thread but DS2 is 6 weeks old today. Can you tell me more about what your bedtime routine was like at 8 weeks? I'm blessed that he is a decent sleeper, 1-2 wake ups and goes back down easily most nights. But I go back to work when he is 2 months exactly and I NEED a schedule as I won't be able to nap/sleep when he does.

@Rainbow Sprinkles: My almost 12 week old still isn't on any real schedule, so don't feel bad about that! My parenting has been tainted by my first LO, who was and is the worst sleeper of all time. I started a strict bed time routin with her at 6 weeks and did all the "right" things and nothing ever worked, and I basically drove myself crazy.

This time, I'm just going with the flow. No real nighttime routine yet (except always putting on the sleep sack over her jammies) and I haven't attempted to try to get her to an earlier bed time yet.

This baby is a night owl and used to have her "long" stretch after 1 am and be up constantly fussing before that. It's very slowly moved up and now she is usually asleep by 10, sometimes a bit earlier. Then she sleeps till 3-4 am, then is up every 2 hours after that.

So last night she was asleep by 10, woke at 3, 5, and 7 to eat. At this age she usually eats and goes right back down, so I don't mind the wakeups so much.

At 6 weeks she was sleeping in the crib which is pushed up next to my side of the bed. But back then she was still up every 3 hours around the clock to eat. She was also still very sleepy during the day at that point and was probably sleeping 18-20 hours a day. At least it felt like it!

@Rainbow Sprinkles: at 6 weeks I was having DD sleep in the bassinet next to my bed. (DH was in the guest room) Our routine was roughly swing at 7pm (2 hour stretch), 9pm nurse then down in the bassinet, 1am nurse/diaper then down in the bassinet, 5/6am nurse/diaper down in bassinet or rnp, 7/8am nurse/diaper/up for "day" - meaning we moved the party downstairs!

Yikes. She would only sleep with my boob in her mouth or DH holding her. I didn't have a swing or RNP or anything! It was rough. DH and I just took turns...

We didn't even have a recliner or glider or rocker....

I agree with Winniebee -- we started DS2 on DS1's nightly bedtime routine at three weeks. We bathed both babies, got dressed, and read stories together for bed time. This helped establish the first long stretch of sleep. We thankfully were able to skip the "witching hours" altogether with DS2 this time due to our early routine. He started out at 4 hours, then started to stretch to 5/6/7/8. Sporadic at first, but then gradually more consistent over the second and third month.

I wanted to add that I started a strict bedtime of 8 pm at 8 weeks and started doing bedtime routine as well as a bottle of pumped milk before bed. I couldn't handle the inconsistent bedtimes and since my 3 year old was always up for the day by 7, letting the baby go to bed at 10 and having him sleep until like 8:30 really didn't benefit me at all. Coincidentally (maybe?) R started giving a longer stretch of 3-4 hours right around then. And I want to say that by 10 weeks was doing 2 wakeups. I'm not sure if it was the routine and bedtime that helped, or just getting older. By 4-5 months his bedtime crept a little earlier to 7:30 and around 6 months it became 7.

I would have happily coslept and fed on demand for the first few months, but my DH is an awful, restless, easily startled sleeper so between night feedings and DH's shenanigans, no one was sleeping. At all. I read The Baby Whisperer and we started using that routine at 4 weeks.

We moved DS to his crib and started a 6:30 p.m bedtime. I'd go to bed by 9, DH would do a dream feed at 10 p.m., and I'd get up for any night feedings (usually 1 and 4) . By 6-8 weeks DS just woke once between 3 and 4. It was like that until about 6 months when he started STTN and we dropped the dream feed.

Omg, it was hell. From 9-12 pm Baby would sleep very well wrapped up in the Moby on DH while I slept. Then he'd wake me after feeding her a bottle of pumped milk. Then baby slept for maybe 2 hours (3 if I was REALLY lucky), but after that baby would wake up every 40 min to 1.5 hours. I would nurse her back to sleep every time but she'd nurse for 2 min. before passing out again, so impossible to get any real milk in her. We were co-sleeping. This insanity didn't get even a smidge better until we sleep trained.

LO1 - the needy baby. He would wake up about every 90 minutes to nurse, which would take 30-45 minutes. We did a combo of co-sleeping and having him sleep in his crib in our room. I was a zombie.

LO2 - was a decent sleeper at that age (it all went way downhill at 3.5 months though). We used a bassinet by the bed, her crib in our room and a bit of co-sleeping. She would sleep her long stretch from about 8 PM to 1 AM or so, then be up to nurse for 10 minutes then back down for another 2-3 hours and up again to nurse for 10 minutes. I would usually bring her into the bed with me in the early morning hours and she would sleep on me.

@Rainbow Sprinkles: My DD was similar. She had really bad colic and reflux and wanted to nurse from 4pm to 9pm almost constantly and then would sleep for 3 hours or so and then up every 2 hours after that. She was in the bassinet next to our bed until 4 months. It was exhausting! I tried to be persistent about putting her back in the bassinet every time because my DH is a very solid sleeper and I was too nervous about co sleeping, although there were many times I slept sitting upright with her on my chest. Pure survival mode!

Mine woke up every 2 hours and awake period was sometimes 45 mins of feeding and changing. At 10 weeks he wakes every 2 to 2.5 hours but we have had one 4hour stretch last week and a couple of 3 hour stretches. It's so hard hearing about other babies sleeping through and wondering if it's something you're doing wrong! We are just putting in place a solid bedtime and a dream feed so I think that is helping, but it's too early to tell.

At 6 weeks...he was in bed by 6 and waking around 10, 1, 4 and 6, I THINK. I know the first stretch of the night was longest and shortest stretch was the last AM one. Amazing how much it sucks in the moment but now a year later I barely remember.
We moved him from the bassinet in our room to his crib in his room at 3 weeks. So at 6 weeks he was definitely in his own room.
Wake ups were only about 15-20 mins each and once the bottle was in his mouth he wasn't even really "awake", he had eyes closed and by end of bottle was basically asleep, burp, put down.
Sometimes he would need a bit of pick-up-put-down BUT it wasn't often and I didn't rock him much. I will say...I was militant about not holding him when he slept, day or night. I really never did it - if he was sleeping, he was in one of his devices. Most often his crib because I wanted him to get used to it. Drowsy but awake (which I know is a phrase that can piss people off, but it worked for us). And I wasn't opposed to some fussing for him to settle.

A very close friend had the issue you are having with babe wanting to be held all night, only at night. She was going bonkers! During the day she'd sleep in the bassinet but at night she just wouldn't! All I can say is that she was persistent (my friend). She constantly tried to put her in the bassinet, day and night, and she was able to leave her there for longer and longer stretches at night. I want to say that by 3 months for sure (probably even earlier) she was able to put her back in the bassinet after each feeding with no issues.
Be persistent! It will suck in the short term but will pay off in spades!
And I'm sure you already know to differentiate between day and night, but that helped my friend a lot too! Naps and sleep in darkened room, night time no stimulation not even diaper change (unless poop), daytime take her into the light for wakeups. I know these are basics so don't hate me, but it really helped my friend so I'm just saying what she says was saving grace.

My first would need to sleep on or with me and nurse regularly through the night at that age.

My second would sleep through the night and sleep in a bassinet next to my bed. I used to feed him once or twice at night still for my own peace of mind. I think the difference between my two kids was their size. My big boy just didn't need the extra food that my much smaller girl did.

Dd was still doing 2-4 hour stretches, with the early mornings having a lot of grunting and noise making and I would soothe her back to sleep before she woke up.

Ds is not there yet, he's 3 weeks, but is doing a max 4 hour stretch and same with the grunting like he might wake up. I don't even try to soothe him but he often half wakes up then falls back asleep so during "my" (dh and I are splitting the night) hours he is often up down up down.

Please don't hate me...but at 6 weeks, my kiddo had just transitioned from one wake up at 4 am to sleeping through the night (around 10 pm to around 6-7 am). At 8 weeks, she's still in a bassinet type thing in our room. I'm too nervous to rock the boat. She's always gone back into the bassinet after wake ups. This past week, I've started to bring her into bed with me after a 6am wake up so I can get more sleep (she's always been one to have a first nap shortly after waking up).

My child dI'd not sleep, and we could never get her on a schedule. At thst point, I think we were on 2 hour stretches, maybe 3 on a good night. She was in a PnP beside the bed, then in the bed to nurse. She nursed all. The. Time. Side nursing was my salvation.

Isn't there a six week growth spurt? I seem to remember incessant nursing around then...

At that age my son was a mean cluster feeder - he'd feed pretty much constantly from 6-9ish - I'd put him down and go to sleep myself, and he could usually go until sometime between 2-4, and then be up hourly or 2-hourly until morning. That of course all went to crap at 4 months.

I love her, but my first baby was a shit sleeper at that age. She slept 90 minute stretches on a good night, and only if she was on DH's chest or in my arms. She took forever to calm back to sleep after nursing, and her nursing sessions were long. It was exhausting. By 2-3 months, we could put her down for the night and she would sleep a 3-4 hour stretch in her crib, but she would still wake every hour or two after that, and we ended up cosleeping a fair amount so I could somewhat sleep through the nursing sessions.

Eta: my second was a better sleeper and slept in either the mini crib or RnP with 2 wakeups at that age.

K was the same until about 3 months maybe, when DH was too tired of having her in our bed and we made the PNP work.
I'll be reading everyone's responses to get some help!

@BandDmommy: DD2 is the same.
We had her in the bassinet in my room but moved her to the crib in her room by 6 weeks. She was only waking once a night and went right back down in her crib. I do realize she is exceptionally easy....and I'm exceptionally lucky.

My son was a nightmare newborn so grain of salt. He would eat at 1030pm, 130am, 430am, but was a screamer (reflux) and painfully slow eater so every feeding took an hour and he needed to be rocked for 45+ minutes before he dozed for 20-30 minutes and then would wake up screaming just cuz. He slept in a RNP or crib in our bedroom so no one got sleep.

I think DS was doing an initial stretch of maybe 3-4 hours, then up every 2 hours, sometimes more frequently. It was rough. He was still in the rnp next to our bed. When we moved him to the crib at 8 weeks, he started sleeping longer stretches. I remember crying to DH I was going to lose my mind after a night of being up every 45ish minutes. Hang in there :bummed:

i just looked back and it looks like we were still going a dream feed (basically waking her up completely) at around 10 before we went to bed and then she would wake up one or two more times. i was also waking her up every 3.5 hours during the day at that point to eat no matter what.

ay-yay-yi.... i have already forgotten that there are so many shades of normal! :D

@Rainbow Sprinkles: she gained good weight so the pediatrician said it was okay to let her sleep. With DS I woke to feed him because he was smaller.
