I love the Palais Royale sheets from BB&B. But because I'm cheap I only have 1 set and have to wash and put back on. I feel like they are a good heavy cotton and don't pill. I have about 4 sets of guest sheets though since I try other brands and never end up liking them.

@Mae: I have a set of Wamsutta white sheets that I've had for years and no yellowing or wear....we use them in our guest room now and they are still bright white. I just wash on hot cycle with regular detergent (and I rarely use bleach). My DH also tends to sweat a lot and we had this set for about 2 years before we upgraded to a King bed and were gifted a new sheet set from my parents.

I have used a lot of sheets and my absolute favorite pair I recently purchased is from llbean. They are also wrinkle resistant. I wash them normally every two weeks and they are so comfy. Another benefit is that if you try them and find you don't like it, you can always return it and get your money back.

@Mae: Sorry it took me so long. We use Caldrea detergent. I really like it, but it doesn't fit your fragrance-free requirement. :( I add about 1/2 cup in the fabric softener dispenser area in my front-loader; for diaper laundry I use 1.25 cups. I think Ecos has a fragrance free option and I am pretty sure that that detergent doesn't have buildup issues.

@Mae: I'm the sweaty one in our family. We have only colored sheets and I use oxyclean on them all the time. They don't discolor and they get clean. We got our best sheets from Sam's club. They are deep(we have a deep mattress), soft, and pretty affordable. Our second favorite sheets are from jcp. I think they are the Cindy crawford ones. I've also had really good luck getting sheets at Tuesday mornings for a good price and high thread count.

Retailer: I really like The Company Store. I find their stuff to be really great quality and to last.

What are you washing with for detergent? Some detergents don't rinse completely clean and can leave residue over time that can cause some of the fabric issues you were describing. I'm a big proponent of vinegar in the wash, too: cheaper than sin, doubles as a natural softener, boosts cleaning, and reduces odor. Cha-ching! Not sure about oxi clean/bleach since I don't use them.

i love white sheets, they are so classic and crisp looking. i think washing the sheets weekly, before dirt/grime really sets in, is the key. i was tired of buying white sheets often since it continually looked so dingy. i echo some of the other ladies here, i just buy gray or tan colored sheets.

@Mae: We use clorox 2 on the colored sheets. I've never had a problem with it. I've also used oxyclean, but I've never felt it did much. On the white sheets, I use a bit of bleach, fabric softener, and a detergent.

I do change and wash them weekly most of the time. I find if I go too much longer, they get that dingy/sweaty funk. However, if you're pretty good about washing them, then leaving them on longer every once and awhile isn't a big deal. If you don't want to run the washer every week for sheets, you could always buy 2 or 3 sets and just wash them all every two/three weeks. Also, if they do get grimey and you have a newer washer, usually a deep steam/sanitize or like cycle will give them a little extra boost.

wow you guys are awesome! Sorry I had a busy day and can't respond to everyone, but you've given me some great ideas.

Question for those of you who buy colored sheets (@Mrs. Oatmeal: @Synchronicity: @MaryM: ) Can you use oxy on them?

I guess my issue is... it isn't that I care if the sheets are discolored. They don't just look dingy but the sweat actually like, melds with the fabric (so gross) and makes the fabric feel grimy and its unpleasant. So I guess I always think that if I get white I can be harsher to get them clean with bleach and/or oxy. But I didn't every try to bleach this set until they started to look dingy. I wonder if it would be better if I used bleach or oxy every wash from the very start?

@PurplePeony: true! I'm just caught because I like nice sheets but I'm also really cheap so I just want them to last longer haha

No advice on brand, but absolutely recommend getting coloured sheets! After dealing with gross-looking white sheets (despite bleach, oxyclean, etc), we got some teal sheets recently, and they're holding up really well!

I was starting to think the gross sheets were just me. I actually found some great ones from TJ Maxx that are 800 thread count and came with 4 pillow cases and it was $50 for the whole set. And after trying every tip under the sun to keep the white from getting gross, I opted for a light grey this time in hopes that they will look better for longer.

I have the same issue with my hubbies side...it's rather gross. SO, instead of spending a lot of money on higher thread count sheets, we buy the Target sheets when they're on sale, and just replace them more often.

In a perfect world, we would wash/change the sheets once a week as well (who doesn't love to climb into fresh sheets on a Sunday night before a work week!?), but alas, we're 2-weekers as well.

No advice on the brand, but I say skip the white and go for some colour! My DH sweats a lot too, and we tend to change our sheets every 2 weeks. I have a few sets that we rotate between, one in a pattern and the others solid colours (a pretty grey, and a beigey-brown), and the discolouration on his side is much less noticable than when we had white sheets! Never again.

I also learned when DH moved in that we had to say goodbye to white sheets. I have some embroidered pillowcases that are white and even they aren't allowed on his side of the bed.
