@mediagirl: You would form the letter in the sand, the card is by the side. It's not technically tracing since you're making the letter free form, rather than using a guide.

There's an alphabet tracing app called Alphabet Quiz for the iPad that she used to be obsessed with. We started with tracing when she was around 2.5 I think - the app was first, then we also traced with our fingers using the baby Einstein mini board books. She's always really been into letters and writing. Now at school, they write their names with paint (using a brush), finger paints, or shaving cream.

She likes to trace letters so I will hold my phone while she uses the Notes app squiggle feature. I'll write the letter, she will trace it with her finger.

@looch: how does that work? I'm imagining sand covering the letter cards and then you can't see them. There has got to be a way I'm missing. :)

Sand tray, with tracing cards. I think those are great, and better for motor development than using a writing utensil.

We have the Hape alphabet puzzle. Aside from just playing with it normally, we sometimes use the pieces to play matching games - like we'll put out a tube of farm animals and match the letters to the first letter of the animals' names. We also play with bath letters and bath crayons the same way - draw a picture/shape, find the letter that it starts with.

Magnetic letters on a cookie sheet, printed alphabet below and match letters
Letters written on a clothes pin and match to letter on a paint sample or on a sentence strip
Sand tray and practice letter formation
Blocks with letters
Write letters on paper then cut them up and practice letters in name or other high frequency sight words (I, can, me, my, etc)
Magna doodle letters--what letter are you writing?
Abc-ya and starfall on the computer

That's all I can think of right now :-)

Trace over letters multiple times in different colored pencils/markers - makes rainbow letters!

You could play with bath letters on the floor, laying them out and working them into different words and combinations.

I'm not too worried about her recognizing letters yet. So, my favorite thing to do is actually talk about what words/things begin with that letter. They do letter of the week at school so I follow along at home and concentrate on one letter a week.
She also really enjoys finding the big and small letter while we're reading books!

My 3 year old is really into recognizing and tracing letters these days. She has a write and wipe ABC book and a Preschool skills book already. I would love to find something else fun for her to do that relates to the alphabet. Any ideas?
