The leapfrog Letter factory and Amazing Alphabet DVDs are great! DD has enjoyed them since 2.5 but even now at 4.5 she likes them. And there are others that work on numbers and building words.

Endless Alphabet/words are fun games.

We used to do something like the game above but with flashcards in our living room. I would say a letter and she would have to find it.

We also have this book, which is more about writing letters, but may help with recognition. DD could use it for hours.

A long time ago (we are 7 now, he was an early reader) I used to draw all 26 alphabets on the driveway with chalk. I'd say, find G! DS would have to find G and step on it. Then find K! He'd find K and jump on it ...etc. He really enjoyed it and I did too! Sometimes our neighbor (same age) kid came over and they compete to see who can find it accurate and fast. You can increase the challenge later by adding in lower case.

When DS was a baby I made a DIY A-Z decorative bunting and hang it in his nursery. Not sure if it helps but I think anything helps with the daily constant passive exposure.

Sesame Street youtube videos are always a nice addition :)

@gotkimchi: it’s sort of a mix—they focus on the letter A, for example, with little songs and games where they tap the As vs other letters, draw it with connect the dots, etc. but then they also introduce sight words associated with the letter A, like am.

@Hypatia: we don’t have an iPad - we have a kindle and it looks like she could do it on there or she could use my phone for it. Do you really think it helps with letters? Some of the reviews made it seem like it focuses on words

If you have an iPad, the Endless Alphabet and Endless Words apps are great. They focus on the phonetic sounds the letters make, which is great.

We have a subscription to Reading Eggs. Our five year old spends about 30 minutes a day on it, and I think it’s really helped. She does need help sometimes understanding what the program wants her to do, but mostly it’s independent.

I love this book for my 4yo! You can play a game on every page naming all the things that start with the letter too. I bought at an usborne party.

@gotkimchi: if you like I can email you the book we use for tracing. It’s in colour so a little more engaging. I put each page in a plastic sleeve and then put it in a binder.

At my school we follow Jan Richardson’s approach to reading instruction and she has done extensive research to show that one of the fastest ways to get students to improve alphabet recognition is by having students trace (with their finger) an alphabet book daily while saying the letter and linking object : (“C, c, cat”)

We do this daily with our K students until they know majority of their letters. It is astonishing how well this simple activity works and how quickly they learn their letters.

This post sums up the procedure pretty well:
https://www.mrsrichardsonsclass.com/how-tracing-letters-helps-letter-identification/

In terms of apps the Endless Alphabet series is really great and popular with kids.

Can anyone recommend something fun for my 5yo to do over the summer to increase her letter recognition. Games, app, etc. This is something we’re working on, she does have a speech therapist who has mentioned it plus her 4K teacher. Thanks!
