Saw this online, no idea if it works, but my toddler can't open our door that 'sticks' and I think this is the same idea.
"The following method allows your baby to still turn the door handle but should be unable to muster up enough strength to open the door. Unless you are raising little Hercules this method to stop a determined toddler from opening a door.

You will need: a washcloth or similar piece of material

As you close the door, place the wash cloth between the door and the door frame on the same side as the door handle. The door should fully close and the wash cloth stay in place.Test the door by turning the handle and attempting to open the door. It should stay in put without exerting an amount of effort, more than your little one should be able to exert. In order to open the door, pull the wash cloth tight and open the door as you normally would.Tips:
If the gap between your door and frame is larger than normal, you can fold the wash cloth back over itself.Place the wash cloth at a height your little one will be unable to reach it and pull it tight"

@catomd00: That's exactly what I was thinking. I have seen childproofing things specifically for lever handles. Our friends have them!

@Littlebit7: ditto your whole post except that we own so we *could* switch the handles out if we felt like spending a fortune. Door monkey has an extra piece you can order that might work for us, but I keep forgetting to order it...but you have to screw it in so I don't know if it would work for renters. :bummed: Right now, I'm just glad the deadbolts on most of our exterior doors are high enough that she can't reach them, and the one she does know how to open is downstairs and she can't get past the baby gate yet. But it does freak me out, and most of the reviews for the lever-style childproofing things are bad. Ugh.

@maddyz: we have the SAME problem at our house. Literally every knob in the entire apartment is a lever. Thankful the front and back doors have a deadbolt as well but it's only a matter of time before she figures those out. We rent so I can't go changing hardware (not that I want to; doorknobs are freakin expensive)
I did find something called a door monkey on Amazon; it keeps doors slightly ajar but can't be fully opened or closed unless the device is removed. Unfortunately it didn't work for me because we have a lot of heavy moulding around the doors.
I don't have a solution; only offering sympathy. :bummed:

@maddyz: can you change the handles out? Or at least just remove the handle on the bathroom door?

LO just turned one, isn't walking yet, but is fast becoming a pro at opening the lever handles in our apartment. All of our doors have lever handles, including the front door. So far LO's favorite is the bathroom, but he also has let himself out of our apartment a few times.

How does one baby proof these?

All the ones I have seen only work form one side of the door. I worry about getting locked in the bathroom with LO on the other side...

DH has to call when he gets home to get let in because I use the hotel lock to keep LO inside.
